WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- A 20-month-old southern Connecticut girl was mauled to death after being attacked by as many as three pit bulls.
The child was visiting her aunt's apartment in West Haven when the attack occurred Friday, authorities told WVIT-TV. She was pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

A German Shepard is the most loyal....you just have to be a good enough owner.
Too many people put the responsibility on the dog, where as most of the responsibility comes from the owner.

I would personally recommend some type of sheltie or border collie. We have a sheltie/Blue tick Heeler mix and she is very much a herder-type pup.

All of my three Cockers, one American and two English Cockers have been fun, friendly and playful. Me and my kids had a blast with them. They are very good around children.
The dog will probably outlive the kid in your house and you can save yourself a lot of grief by just saying "No".
I have never been a fan of dogs of any type, unless they can live outside unattended and are well-trained, absolutely obedient and acclimated.
Same with children.

That’s a glowing review of the sheltie. Almost brought tears to my eyes reading it. Seriously. I’m a sucker for loyal-dog stories.
The stuffed kind do not crap in the floor. And there is no overhead.
Had a friend that had a large white shepard. You were OK when you went in the house, the dog sniffed and left you alone....one night they came home and found the side door open, the kitchen and living room had blood and blood trails, the dog was quitely sleeping in his bed...did his job and went to sleep. Nothing was missing from the house, just some blood from the crooks was missed
Most "pitbull" attacks we read about...aren't. Any large dog with strong territorial tendencies is potentially dangerous ESPECIALLY without proper common-sense training. That said, pits have a reputation and that reputation is what attracts some idiots to them. And idiots aren't known for their common sense.
My favorite is the German Shepard. Always has been, always will be.
I would not recommend a Cocker Spaniel for the child.....
Not to mention Yorkshire Terriers.

Pit Bulls are miniature African lions.
While there are attacks by other breeds for sure, often Pit bulls are owned by people who want aggressive dogs,and they choose that breed to to train to be aggressive because they are powerful and fearless. I know several people with Pit Bulls that are as lovable and loyal as my Black Lab. Then when those dogs that have been taught to be aggressive get out of control, of course they say the dog has never been mean before.
Sometimes docile dogs are separated from visitors who have an irrational fear of all dogs. And some do.
