Well, according to Elizabeth Warren, if you drive your car on a public road, or if you attended a public school, or waited at a crosswalk until a government-owned electric sign told you to WALK, you have received a government benefit, and now owe everything you accomplish in life to the government. Of course, the government, being the compassionate deity it is, will graciously let you keep a percentage of the money you earn by virtue of your accomplishments. It’s a good system.

Social Security is not a benefit. It is a person’s own money taken by the government over a lifetime and paid back only if he lives to 65-67. If he dies before that, it’s all gone; not a cent goes to his estate. A spouse may get a benefit but that spouse also contributed over their working lifetime.
On average you have to live to 76 to get back the raw cash you paid in over a lifetime. With compound interest over a lifetime the amount paid in would have grown to a much larger sum in an outside investment, like a savings account. So you really have to live into your eighties to get back the money plus interest that you would have had if you had your own personal savings account.
And your spouse would get any of the leftover if you died before your eighties, not the government.
I guess I am in that bunch - since I am now receiving SS checks. Of course, I paid FICA taxes for about 48 years or so-from age 18 to age 67.
All those years of work only made me a stronger conservative. I do not think 50% is the true marker for tipping the scales. It’s closer to 55-60%, since you have to have over 55% of the folks literally without any other income before they would all be automatically voting Democratic. Yikes, that’s getting awefully close now, isn’t it?
