Cops: Amish clan attacks family
Tribune Chronicle: Warren, Ohio ^

MESOPOTAMIA (Ohio)- The invasion of a Mesopotamia home in which a man's beard and a woman's hair were cut was one in a series of Amish-on-Amish attacks across four eastern Ohio counties, including two on Tuesday, investigators said.

The attacks were carried out by members of a group of Amish religious castoffs near Bergholz over spiritual differences, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said Thursday.

The Amish men known as the ''Bergholz Clan,'' led by Bishop Sam Mullet, are under investigation by at least four sheriff's departments. No arrests have been made but investigators said they plan to file assault and burglary charges.

Abdalla contacted Trumbull County Sheriff Thomas Altiere last month to notify him of a possible unreported attack Sept. 6 at 4088 state Route 87. Abdalla said he found out when attackers returned to his county with the hair and beard cuttings to prove to Mullet that his orders were carried out.

Lt. Richard McBride said that when he went to the home last month, at first he encountered resistance from resident Barbara Miller. After some coaxing, Miller pointed to her husband, whose beard had been cut, and said, "They did that to him," the sheriff's report states.

Then she removed the bandanna she was wearing, revealing several patches of missing hair. "And they did this to me," she told McBride.

Is Whorealdo doing any reporting of this?

Are canings next week?

Recently attended a briefing on this with my Sheriff’s Department Special Unit. These attacks aren’t a joke. An eastern Ohio Sheriff was specifically threatened by this group. The description of how this group is beginning to operate reminds me a little of some splinter Latter Day Saints groups out west.

“Hope and Change” even reaches the Amish.
Sigh.

Yes, they (depending on the local church) often have electricity in their barns, but not homes.

The button issue is mostly a matter of modesty as I have been told. It is a rare sight to see woman show her hair in public, and a man’s beard declares to the world that he is married.

It is always interesting when the youth go through their “sowing of the oats” period in life. Before committing to church membership, they often don “Yankee” clothes on weekends and hang out in bars. They even wire their buggies with high dollar sound systems and rattle the town’s windows.

Midnight sack races could get Amish yutes off the streets.

ROTFL! How did we miss celebrating Make Fun of the Amish Day this year? The least we can do for them is to give them back their radio station!

Understand your being disillusioned after learning some details of how the Amish cope with modern life, but in terms of tolerating odd religious/cultural beliefs I'll take straight pins to prevent rape over Islamic scalpels to remove girls' genitalia anytime.

Just as a comment, the "it's OK to have others run machinery for your business" idea seems similar to the old Orthodox Jewish practice that strict observance of the Sabbath requires a Gentile or two be hired to cook Saturday meals for the family (either that or Mama cooks a couple days' meals before sundown Friday).

The variety of rules of conduct within specific cultures and religions that humanity has come up with is truly amazing. But at least in most cases they are not lethal to the members of those cultures or outsiders.

In order to sell veggies, baked goods, and baskets on the side of the road:

Purchase buggy and horse
Men: Wear black with straw hat
Grow beard
Women: Purchase black long dress and bonnet
Put hair under bonnet
