Buoyed by a series of strong debate performances, Mitt Romney is suddenly attracting new support from major donors and elected officials, some of whom had resisted his previous entreaties, as people across the GOP grow more accepting of the presidential contender as the partyâs standard-bearer.
On Wednesday, Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and former House speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) became the latest in a string of current and former elected officials who have announced their support for Romney over the past week. Former Republican National Committee chairman Jim Nicholson, hedge fund manager Paul Singer and Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone are among the major Republican fundraisers supporting the candidate.
"It's all coming together for him," said Cochran, who formally endorsed Romney on Wednesday. "People are beginning to be impressed with him and his thoughtful comments about the issues."

All true conservatives should begin donating directly to Cain’s campaign. He is the only consistent conservative in the race for the Republican nomination who has a chance. We can’t have another RINO shoved down our throats as has been done since Ronald Reagan. I made my first donation to Cain last week. If Romney is selected as the nominee, I will sit out the vote for president and vote for the most conservative Tea Party endorsed Republican candidates for House, Senate, and state/local races.
The Republican establishment has been pushing Romney for at least the past 2 years. I can’t believe that people are so surprised, I just can’t figure how they do it.
I am also sick of holding my nose. Whether or not I vote for Romney depends on such factors as his VP choice.
Republicans increasingly see Mitt Romney as the ‘inevitable candidate’
I haven’t noticed an uptick in suicide rates.
KMA, Hewitt...
Nobody that can't raise a ton of money is going to be on the ballot.
there are still conservatives running. We need to ensure they stay alive through the early primary states. There can’t be a clear decisive winner coming out of the early primaries and into the super Tuesday primaries because the only clearly decisive winner that will come out of thearly states is going to be a RINO IMHO. We should consider forgiving Newt’s transgressions too- also IMHO. what’s more, Bachmann remains the most conservative candidate left. we should all be backing her heavily. she’s smart, experienced, and capable of dismembering Obama in an honest issue oriented debate. I wouldn’t trust her to know Elvis Presley’s birthday but I would trust her to be an excellent conservative president.
some interesting thoughts about Romney’s inevitability..

No, Rick Perry really IS outright for amnesty, at least as any normal person would use the word, meaning legalizing the million of illegals here in the USA by calling them "guest workers":
When Rick Perry says he is not for "amnesty" he simply means he is not in favor of giving them citizenship. He is happy to legalize them, however, and let them stay here as sort of permanent second class citizens.
Yeah, we should all vote for someone who “can win” versus the candidate which best represents our interests.
If any RINO gets nominated, including PERRY, I’ll be writing-in Sarah Palin. You and the rest of the “vote for someone who can win” jackasses can KMA!
The Washington Post boosting Romney . . . What’s next, the sun seen rising in the East?
Frankly, the WaPo folks I do not take serious, the paper is a JOKE.
I'm not an Evangelical and I will not accept Mitt.
Cain supporter here. Perry jumped the shark.
We need to face facts - not all Pubbies are FReepers. With that in mind — our in-fighting on this forum is not necessarily applicable or reflected elsewhere.
There is the possibility - IF Romney is the GOP nominee - he could attract crossover/disillusioned/ DEM voters and defeat Obama. ergo: holding noses will not be necessary;)
I could never support Romney and his Mormonism. Mormons are not Christians like they claim to be!
Insight about Romney in a post by Ann Barnhardt:
“Assuming, just for a moment, that we actually make it to Nov 2012 and there is a legally contested election, let me explain the Romney situation. Romney is a scumbag and is pretty much the poster boy for everything that is wrong with the political class. Romney is about as much a conservative as Barbra Streisand. Romney is just prettier. He has no integrity and will say ANYTHING in order to get elected. He is part of the despicable political class in this country that transcends the parties. They’re all in bed with each other, at the end of the day. The RNC is the same as the DNC, and the RNC decided in 2008 that Romney would be their boy in 2012. If you recall, Romney was winning the Republican primaries fairly handily - and then all of a sudden, for no real reason, everyone quit, and McCain was anointed. It was surreal. Do you remember that? In exchange for dropping out and handing the nomination to McCain in 2008, Romney was promised 2012 by the RNC. In other words, we’re all being played.”
