Buoyed by a series of strong debate performances, Mitt Romney is suddenly attracting new support from major donors and elected officials, some of whom had resisted his previous entreaties, as people across the GOP grow more accepting of the presidential contender as the partyâs standard-bearer.
On Wednesday, Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and former House speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) became the latest in a string of current and former elected officials who have announced their support for Romney over the past week. Former Republican National Committee chairman Jim Nicholson, hedge fund manager Paul Singer and Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone are among the major Republican fundraisers supporting the candidate.
"It's all coming together for him," said Cochran, who formally endorsed Romney on Wednesday. "People are beginning to be impressed with him and his thoughtful comments about the issues."

>>>You want to get a smooth, good debater, never mind that he is Obama-light, support Romney.
You want a conservatives with a proven conservative record (which is unfrotunately being distorted by some), who is not a debater, but a strong executive, support Perry.
You want to spoiler, who will help Romney be the nominee, support Cain.
The choice is yours<<<
Perry is the spoiler at this point. He has ZERO chance at the nomination. Calling all Americans who believe in national sovreignty and the rule of law “heartless” did him in.
At this point, Cain is the only one who can beat Romney and he will, unless Perry, Gingrich, Bachmann, Perry and their supporters stay in the race too long. Fortunately, I do believe that all of those four love America enough to get out in time to stop that pro-abortion, anti-gun, pro-Socialized medicine, fraud from stealing the party.
The same goes for Cain. If he begins to fade for some reason, and one of the others becomes the clear choice to beat Romney, I believe he will get out of the way.
Of course I am your friend... I'm everybody's friend!
(Especially if they're buying!)
Not only is he the Cain that is ahead of Romney, he is the Cain that will pick up nearly all the votes from supporters of Perry, Gingrich, Bachmann, and Santorum, if and when they drop out.
The only thing inevitable about Romney is that he will NOT win the nomination, unless all the more conservative candidates stubbornly fight to the bitter end, rather than getting behind whomever is the strongest after the first few primaries. Right now that candidate seems to be Cain.
And you are removed from reality if you think that Obama can win. I don't believe he can defeat ANY of the Republican candidates, and the polls would seem to bear that out.
So this is no time for us to give up on what George H.W. Bush called "the vision thing" and pick a nominee who does not have a strong conservative vision, just out of a preposterous fear that a real conservative cannot win the election.
And if you don't think Cain would cream Obama, I think you need a reality check.
Conservative America reminds me of the old Greek City States. Always warring amongst themselves, only occasionally uniting for common cause, mostly wasting great potential only to eventually be conquered and enslaved. Romney is a sure thing if this continues. Personally I think Newt is our best bet sans Sarah. Too bad Paul is a foreign policy throw back to a long gone era when the USA could get away with minding it’s own business. If not for that I could consider Paul. Sure hope Newt survives the early primaries and conservatives rally to him. He really is our best man.
“Conservative America reminds me of the old Greek City States. Always warring amongst themselves, only occasionally uniting for common cause, mostly wasting great potential only to eventually be conquered and enslaved.”
Umm, no. The same things were said 235 years ago yet the results were anything but slavery.
I vote for values, ideas and policies, not politicians. They serve me, not vice-versa.
When people forsake themselves to politicians that is when they become SLAVES.
Look.
You folks who want to keep the fantasy alive in your hearts, go start or join a "Draft Sarah!!" or "Sarah can still win!!" thread.
I absolutely promise -not- to show up on that thread to burst your bubble.
But keep your dream out of those threads where we are discussing candidates who are actually, you know, running.
Mittens will never be my choice as the candidate. Unfortunately, by the time the TX primary is held, the candidate has already been chosen for us.
That's as may be.
But do you want your candidate to attack Romney's religion in such a way that millions of Mormons perceive it as an attack on them personally, and so decide to sit out the election?
Perhaps you do. But if so, get ready for four more years of Zero.
The GOP can do fine without Romney, but not without the Mormon portion of the electorate.
We agree.....
The point that I was trying to make is that any....ANY....position other than strict enforcement of our immigration laws is back door amnesty for illegals.
My last line is telling.....
“When Perry stands on the border and says NO Mas and backs it up with strict enforcement, Ill reconsider.”
I would imagine that our little Republican primary voters know nothing else to do but what the party elders tell them. They just can’t find a good candidate; so it’s Romney’s “turn.”
If you live in TX, you can’t write in Palin or anyone else unless she or another declares herself or himself a formal write-in candidate.
Stop it.
What a worthless thread.
I don't -- religion (except Islam) should not be a matter of debate on the GOP candidacy and far less for it to be ripped as a method of politicking
If Republicans increasingly see Mitt Rommney asthe “inevitable candidate”, they may as well finish the vision and see a second term for obams. Because that is what it will amont to.
No. Get over it. She does not want to run or she would have. Almost 60% of republicans polled indicated they did not want her to run.
Insulting others is not going to win your candidate any votes. I'm really beginning to wonder if you are secretly in the Romney camp, because you are so obnoxious on every thread that you post for Perry, that you have to be driving votes away from him.
Seriously, if you truly support Perry, you had better change your tactics. You are not doing him any service with your attitude.
Romney would lose to Obama because he’s weak and will run a campaign worse than McCain.
