Rumors are swirling that South Carolina Senator and staunch conservative Jim DeMint may endorse Mitt Romney for President. From Roll Call:
Mitt Romney is the favorite to receive Sen. Jim DeMint's (R-S.C.) much-sought-after endorsement in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, according to knowledgeable GOP sources.
DeMint, who endorsed the former Massachusetts governor in 2008, made clear in an interview late last week that he has made no decisions on whom he will support in the 2012 primary. But Republican operatives familiar with the DeMint-Romney relationship and privy to the conservative Senator's private assessment of the GOP field believe Romney is the most likely candidate to receive the backing of the tea party favorite.
"Jim is far more likely to endorse Mitt than anyone else currently in the race," a Republican with South Carolina ties said. "Jim is a business guy and that's his background. He's not really the good ol' boy conservative type. So Mitt in a lot of ways is a more comfortable fit for him."
An endorsement to Romney from DeMint would be significant considering DeMint is a tea party favorite with a much more conservative record than Romney on most issues and constistently comes in as one of the most conservative Senators year after year. But, we shouldn't jump to any conclusions just yet.
DeMint told Roll Call on Thursday that he and Romney occasionally trade emails, but he said they haven't talked in some time. South Carolina's junior Senator said he thinks highly of many of the candidates in the race and that the Palmetto State primary remains wide open. That primary is set for Jan. 21, presumably giving DeMint another three months to make his decision.
Suuuuuure....
What problem DeMint has with Cain?
Pure BS..First of all, no way DeMint endorses BEFORE the primary. And since Mitt will finish about 4th or 5th in the state........
He would be very stupid to do so before the SC primary......................but then he is a Republican............
If he thinks this would sway most people he is wrong. The Tea Party movement is a rejection of politicians know best and the concept that elected so-called representatives are smarter than we are. It is one more attempt to install the elite selected candidate. Screw Romney and the rest of the RINOS.
DeMint has made many good endorsements in the past, but mittens ain’t one of ‘em. I don’t care who the good senator endorses, cuz I’m voting for Cain in the SC primary, and will express my disgust with Mr. DeMint to Mr. DeMint if he endorses mittens this time.
SC ping
A DeMint endorsement would be a big coup.
Romney is ObamaCare which is the next Holocaust in my opinion; case closed for me.
I hope this is bull, but there is nothing like a national election to bring out the yellow on Republican spines, even if it means backing a loser like Romney.
Bad move, Jim.
That would be disgusting
BTW, how soon can you South Carolina people kick Lindsey Graham out of office?
If the establishment forces Romney down our pie hole, I think there is a very good chance that a real Conservative makes a third-party run this fall.
The downside is that would mean a second term for Obama (presuming that pants-soiling Democrats don’t find some way of forcing him off the ticket first). In his second term he would face a GOP Senate and would be in a very weak state politically.
On the other hand Conservatives may just decide they can live with that and now is the time to take out the RINO Moderate Party once and for all. If they came in third they would go the way of the Whigs.
I find this VERY hard to believe.
There goes his Senate Conservatives PAC.
This would be a huge mistake for Demint. He is the Chairman of the Senate Conservatives Fund and this would be a very un-Conservative move to back a RINO with his endorsement. If he does, the SCF sees no more contributions from me as it would cement the fact that it is a ruse even though this endorsement would not have any bearing on a Senate race.
Probably the same problem many of us have with Cain (a good guy, by the way).
Cain has no money, no organization anywhere nor will he have any, he will not win any primaries to speak of, and certainly doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of beating Obama.
Conservatives backing Cain are principled but in reality not too politically grounded. He just can't win over Obama. Wishing won't make it so.
DeMint is first and foremost a savvy tactical politician and knows all this.....although if he endorses Romney, it personally will make me ill.
