(Reuters) - Presidential hopeful Herman Cain's quirky "smoking ad" may have mystified many Americans, but according to a new Reuters/Ipsos online poll, it has drawn a sharp line between Republicans who identify with the Tea Party and those who don't.

The ad, which shows Cain's chief of staff Mark Block puffing on a cigarette for no apparent reason, created enormous Internet buzz this week.

Six in 10 of those who strongly identify with the conservative Tea Party movement said they loved or liked the ad.

An almost equal percentage of people who self-identified as mainstream Republicans either disliked or hated it.

Was that the smoking man from 24? I still don’t get it. I like to see a straight forward assault on the Marxist in the White Hut, not a Fellini Film Short.

Because it was an online poll, typical margins of error do not apply. Despite that, various recognized methods were used to select as representative a sample as possible and weigh the results. If this were a traditional random survey, it would have a margin of error of between plus 4.4 percent and plus 5.1 percent. This figure varies because some participants dropped out of the video portion of the survey.

So in other words it is a make believe story about a make believe poll

The man was smoking a legal cigarette FGS! The smoking Nazi’s need to just go away, IMHO!

I’m sure that ad alone will make at least a million people take up the habit/sarc

Well, as usual when a republican does it it’s the end of the earth. The commie press totally ignores it when the muslim commie-in-chief does it. They think it’s cute.

I like Cain a lot and he will have my vote if he’s the GOP nominee. I’ve been to over 30 Tea Party rallies. That said, the smoking bit is the wrong angle if you ask me. For every libertarian type that applauds this, there is a social conservative that doesn’t agree.

At the end of the day smoking is a liberal trait, not a conservative trait.

It was still a great ad.

One of the dumbest, creepiest ads I’ve ever seen. That smile at the end is horrible, especially the way they fill the frame with Cain’s face.

There's only one thing to note:

the ad...created enormous Internet buzz this week.

Everything else is irrelevant. Cain is a marketing genius and his campaign has developed tremendous hype on virtually no budget.

Online polls, even the ones you might like ... UTTERLY meaningless.

there had to have been some serious psychological thought that went into this ad. Block looks focused as he’s bearing down on that nail. this ad may be targeting smokers, folks who crave smoking, and many Blacks, because Blacks are likely smokers. makes ‘em calm, and focused.......because Block is, and that’s the way they want to feel...it’s the reason they smoke in the 1st Place....and, Herman then appears as the choice of clear and focused thinkers.

Smoking is smoking. It isn’t aligned to any philosophy. And any “social” conservative who wants smoking banned and forced out of the public eye, or finds the ad offensive, is just a control freak in disguise.

I sent him something after the last debate.

Hint for you Newtbot. Tearing down the other canidates does not build up yours. You might want to learn from the way Perry's campaign impolded. Make the case FOR your canidate, don't race around trash talking the other canidates.

Wow, only a few years ago the Flintstones starred in cigarette ads...now an ad that simply shows somebody smoking is somehow eeeeevillll.

Its like those states with those weird liquor laws that do not allow you to leave the store unless said beverage is in a paper sack...as if small children will be scarred for life if they see someone with an unopen bottle of beer in their hand.
