A dogged freshman lawmaker who refused to budge from the House chambers earlier this month until the Patrick administration came clean on how much taxpayers coughed up last year for free health care to illegal aliens finally got his answer yesterday: a whopping $93 million.

The 58-year-old Andover Republican, Rep. James J. Lyons Jr. — who bucked Beacon Hill by holding a sit-in in the House chambers two weeks ago — pried the shocking report from state officials. It showed that nearly 55,000 illegal immigrants received more than $93 million in MassHealth benefits for emergency medical services last year.

1/3rd of 1 percent of the entire state budget. I can't get worked up over the amount, just the principle of the thing.

Now i see why they increased our sales tax last year.

We needed more money for our beloved illegals.

The curious thing...this is just for emergency medical services. You can figure anywhere from $2k (for a sprained ankle visit at the emergency room) to $100k (for a serious gunshot wound). So if you did some estimations here...from these 55k illegals...there’s probably only 1,200 of them that ever went to the emergency room for that year. The vast majority are just like the rest of us....they put some Bactine on the wound, and bandaged it up.

If the state of Mass...or President Obama in his efforts...had simply targeted the expense of medical care as being the number one issue...then we’d all be spending alot less on visits, drugs, and long-term care. This is the true problem of our mess today...the political dimwits won’t look at real costs....they just want us all to share in the cost misery more than what we used to.

A lot of these types go to the emergency room every time they get a head cold. I live in L.A., so I’ve got some anecdotal data.

You changed the headline. You now need to remove the apostrophe as you no longer are using a possessive.

$93M...which is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

The real total, including ALL subsidies paid to illegals, is most likely 10X that, call it an even $1B.

Allocate that number across every state in the US and you have a figure approaching Obama’s stimulus request.

I’ve never been in county. When I lived in LA county, you could see them even in Kaiser-Permanente’s waiting rooms.

The MA budget is over 27.9 billion?

Who cares? A lone Republican senator from Andover? I think people are hardly exercised over the corruption that goes on in the Bay State and much of the country. No matter who is in office nothing gets changed.

James Madison

Annals of Congress, House of Representatives, 3rd Congress, 1st Session, page 170 (1794-01-10)
The Annals summarize speeches in the third person, with the actual text of Madison’s quote as follows:

“Mr. Madison wished to relieve the sufferers, but was afraid of establishing a dangerous precedent, which might hereafter be perverted to the countenance of purposes very different from those of charity. He acknowledged, for his own part, that he could not undertake to lay his finger on that article in the Federal Constitution which granted a right of Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.”
