Colorado voters reject raising taxes to support education

In what could be a harbinger of the 2012 election, Colorado voters Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a measure that would have raised nearly $3 billion for education by temporarily increasing state income, sales and use taxes.

With 59% of the projected vote counted, Proposition 103 was trailing 65% to 35%, the Associated Press reported.

The debate over the measure closely mirrored recent rancor in Washington over the question of whether more spending will revive a moribund economy or slow down a nascent recovery.

It was “all for the children.” It fell flat.

The Public School is the only product where as quality declines prices goes up.

And that’s only because we outlawed all other product monopolies.

Good, the entire scheme of public education and taxes to pay for it needs to end. Those who pay the least (usually none) of the taxes in the tax base, receive the most in benefits. I’m tired of paying for other people’s children ar gunpoint. Especially in today’s modern world, the cost of education should be very, very low. All I’m paying for is a glorified babysitter and communist indoctrinator, no thanks.

Even liberal Washington State rejected a "tax the rich" plan promoted by Bill Gates Sr. who said it was only going to hit people making over $200K and all the money was going to be applied to education. Even though Washington State leans waaay to the left, the voters saw through both lies.

Fort Collins voters also repealed much of the “medical MJ” laws past by city council. Loveland did the same thing last year.

You cannot “BUY” a better school. Pumping more money into the schrools is like thinking higher green fees will lower your golf score.

No significant result from early school start by Tom Weber, Minnesota Public Radio October 31, 2011

St. Paul, Minn. — Test scores did not change significantly last year in 25 southwest Minnesota school districts that had special permission to begin the school year before Labor Day, according to a report. Leaders of those districts, however, believe the early start will eventually boost achievement. The report also includes results of a survey that found more students, teachers, and community members agree. Mountain Lake superintendent Bill Strom said report shows mixed results academically. Some districts showed improved reading and math scores this year, but the 25 districts as a whole fell short of several goals. Mountain Lake superintendent Bill Strom said there was no significant change overall during the first year of the early start.

they also believe in unicorns and tooth fairies , but are reluctant to admit leprachauns exist.

...by temporarily increasing state income, sales and use taxes...

I'm glad they didn't fall for the "temporarily" scam.
There is no such thing as a temporary tax, once the pols have extra money they WILL find a way to spend it, and then some.
Try to remove an education tax and we will immediately hear cries of how "children will be kicked out on the streets" or some variation thereof.

There is no such thing as a “temporary” tax increase. Liberals must think we’re all stupid. CO voters caught onto the game.

My sis has lived in Ft Collins for years. She was always decidedly left but, has taken a serious turn toward enlightenment.

It began with her involvement to preserve some land near her home for a conservation easement or parkland of some sort. After that was accomplished, the city built soccer fields on it an it became a crowded noisy place with Mariachi music blasting and weekend consistent parties.

She even moved out of town last year.

By what percentage has tuition gone up over the past decade?

I’m currently in an argument with my in-laws concerning college education and whether or not it should be “free”.

Of course, they claim that college should be free to all. I do agree with them, but only if going to college for free means that the faculty and administration work for free.

This had nothing to do with the kids. It was a transparent tax scheme to get money in the hands of teachers union. Nothing more....nothing less!

If I give free education then I dictate the terms.

Only offer degrees in what the nation needs.

Scientists, engineers, Doctors.

No liberal arts and no lawyers!

When a temporary tax hike ends the MSM calls it a tax cut for the wealthy.

This was never about increasing education spending. It was simply a massive tax increase gussied up as education spending. In fact, there’s nothing in the tax increase legislation that forces current general funding levels of education to stay the same PLUS adding this new money. The legislature could simply use this new money for education and divert existing education funding elsewhere. For all practical purposes, this tax increase would just be dumped into Colorado’s general fund. Clearly enough people in Colorado were paying attention to this cynical shell game and rejected it.

BTW, this whole effort was led by a single lunatic Democrat from the City of Boulder, Rollie Heath. He personally organized the petition drive, collected signatures, and raised $600,000. The opposition raised less than 10% of that and the statewide vote was 3-2 against. Not a single Democrat official endorsed the measure, including the Democrat state governor. Every county but 3 voted against the measure, and two of those counties voted for it by less than 100 votes. Boulder County managed to vote for it by about 9%.

You've hit on the liberal tactic in every region of the US. They are bringing up tax bills under all sorts of good sounding agendas, but if they can get them passed by fooling enough people, the money goes straight to the general fund to be used on their pet projects and paybacks.
