Being a state institution, they are all state employees. Subject to the states hiring standards and quota correct?
Thats easy to say right now but I could envision a state of mind for 28 year old McQeary where he would have a hard time believing what he saw. When McQeary played at PSU, Sandusky was a virtual deity. In light of that I could understand McQeary taking the issue to the 2 most important people in his life....his father and Joe Paterno.
But he has also done some pretty decent things in his life.
In an era when coaches demand exorbitant contracts and get paid millons when they get fired, Paterno has for years signed contracts that are way under the value for a program such as Penn State.
He still lives in the same modest house on campus that he has for decades.
Paterno and his wife have donated millions to the University to endow academic ( NOT sports) related programs and scholarships.
He has definitely stayed too long as coach...he did not know when it was time to go....but these calls for summarily firing him are wrong. He should be allowed to finish out the season, then retire.
Many of the same peopel, and media sources, now calling for him to be summarily canned, were the same ones DEFENDING Michael Jackson against pedophilia charges...anyone see the hypocrisy here?
And look for the Nittany Lions to run the table...win out this season, and the Big 10 championship, AND win their BCS bowl...probably finish up at #6-8 final national ranking..
A couple of questions;
1. As I understand the situation, two officials of Penn State have been arrested for lying to a grand jury. Why would they lie when they must have known where this would lead?
2. Does a possible financial impact have anything to do with all the lying, failure to report crime, cover-up, etc?
Football= money/income for the college=sweep the rapes under the rug/keep your mouth shut=we are shocked=CYA mode!

It’s so weird, how they phrase these things. Either they’re firing him or he’s resigning. If you’re forcing him into retirement, then he’s not resigning. So when the time comes for him to leave, you let him say he’s doing it for health, family, or whatever. But you don’t say you’re planning his departure, because that implies he’s being fired; you might as well come out and say it at that point.
But what does it matter? PR is all a bunch of bosh.

DUH.....
You mean to tell me Penn State University is a branch of the Government of Pennsylvania?
You mean that this pedophile coach was on the state payroll?
Let me tell you something: if a state-run orphanage, or a state-run child-care center, had a scandal like this, it would, in very short order, no longer be state-run. It would no longer be anything, in fact.
It happened in Philadelphia, with one of their child-care agencies.
It could happen to Penn State too. Can you imagine?

I agree and Paterno should have been right there with them. This whole thing is confusing and frustrating to me. The GA should have made some attempt to help the child as soon as he saw what was going on. You’ve got to do the right thing.
This whole thing is sickening - if I walked into a locker room and witnessed an old creep buggering a ten year old boy, my first instinct would be to crack his skull with something and then call the COPS. Joe Paterno is up to his sorry butt in this scandal, and he can rot in hell with the rest of these perverts.
When I went back to college after service, I found out that the athletic department doesn't have to follow the usual rules.
A case can be made that Paterno should’ve done more when given the evidence, but he did take it to Penn State authorities. THEY were the ones that sat on it. Nobody’s accusing Paterno of perjury, unlike the Penn State president, who was called out by the grand jury for lying under oath.
The Penn State administration is going to shove Paterno out the door over this, I’ll bet you’re right. But it won’t save them. They’ll be lucky if the faithful in Happy Valley don’t string them up.
