AP: Joe Paterno to retire at season's end
CBS Sports ^ | November 9, 2011

Posted on 11/09/2011 7:25:38 AM PST by Zakeet

UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.

As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."

"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

Perhaps it’s time to yank the statue down & realize that JoePa is not a god, after all.

Bobby Bowden isn't a diety in my book, but even with some of the stuff that went on at FSU, his reputation remains pretty good.

I read somewhere on this thread that the GA’s father was a pediatrician.

Again my comments are hypothetical. However I do think alot more is to come.

The total homosexual depravity at this school can be traced back to when they hired Spanier. He was the one who approved and endorsed the annual Penn State lesbian “C@ntFest”. Do a google search on this festival. You will astounded that this is allowed to gone on at a major university. I had heard rumors about Sandusky 10 years ago. There are other pedophile events that have taken place at this hell hole. For example, when basketball star John Ameche bragged about breaking in a 16 yeard male homo while playing at Penn State. Also, back in 1999 Alamo bowl when senior QB Kevin Thompson was not allowed to play his last game. The official reason is that he hurt his shoulder in practice, the real reason is that he was caught having homo sex with another kid in the dorm. Even Daryl Clark, the 2009 QB has skeletons in his gay closet. I could go on and on. Penn State is THE number one most debauched, hedonistic school in all recorded history. It should be burned to the ground.

All to protect the footbal franchise and the income stream for the school. Now it looks like they’ll have neither. And the kids are still the losers. The victims of these ehinous acts have lost the most...but so have past and present members of the football team....and the current students and alumni.

We see how the schools circle the wagons...as they did around the professor(tree ring) who falsified data on the globull warming studies. So why would anyone think they would ever be capabe of impartiality? And now it will cost them dearly..in $$$$, careers and reputation. Time to clean house...all of them.

I happen to be a Penn State graduate (’75) and I suppose I do have some skin in the game as far as Paterno and the institution are concerned. ..Not as far as employment opportunities or anything like that - - I have my own business - - but because... well, just because I’m a PSU graduate.

The damage done by that homosexual pedophile rapist Sandusky cannot be overrstated. I just double-checked my FR homepage to make sure there was no reference to being a Penn State graduate and then I wondered, what about all the graduating seniors who have to put “Penn State” on their resumes?

Yikes. If people think an employer won’t grimace just a little when seeing “Penn State” on a resume and hire instead the other, equally qualified, college graduate from some other college, they are deluding themselves.

And what top-flight recruit will want to play football (or any other sport) at Penn State... walk into the showers where the rapes took place? How many high school kids (and their parents) are suddenly going to look elsewhere for a college because the name “Penn State” has been transformed to “Pedo State” and they don’t feel like being the brunt of jokes for the rest of their lives? The damage Sandusky and his enablers have done to the university cannot be overstated. It is complete devastation.

That institution, my college, Penn State, has just been knocked for one hell of a loop. The only conceivable remedy as far as I’m concerned is for EVERYBODY to go, beginning with Spanier and Paterno, and all the way down until you hit the mid-level folks. A TOTAL housecleaning is required if there is to ever be the start of a healing process at that place. Meanwhile, I will be wearing my kids’ Temple sweatshirts.

FRegards,
LH

I’m a little fuzzy on Joe Pa’s role in this. As far as I know, someone came to Joe with a rumor

I'm sure other posters have already chimed in...but a direct eyewitness report from a trustworthy individual whom you later name as your wide receivers coach is not simply "rumor central."

Joe immediately went to his superior. Is Joe supposed to be all knowing? Isn’t it possible that Joe thought it was handled and the rumors are false

How do you define the word "immediate?" Let's say 'twas YOUR son who had been raped...and the rapist had the same potential access to your son the following night...earlier in the day of that "following night" -- Paterno heard face-to-face the eyewitness account...and yet had still not reported it to his superiors...he didn't report it til Sunday.

So Paterno knows the urgency of a hurry-up offense late in the game when they are down, but not the urgency of a felony report where children remain at risk?

Come on. Don't dumb down this crime and its tangled web of immoral responses.

Obviously it would be "reasonable" for Joe to believe it was "handled" once he passed it off that Sunday. But come on, we're talking March 2002. You'd think that by the time 2003 rolled around and Sandusky had never been arrested & he was still doing his 2003 sports camps that Joe just might get a clue that some follow-up/follow-thru was needed. (Ya think?)

Now here we are over 9.5 years later? Sandusky still had access to the main Penn State campus last week. Sandusky still ran sports camps thru 2008 at Penn State satellite campuses.

Why how "vigilant" of JoePa to do the "virtuous" thing long-term.../s NOT!!!

And what about the graduate assistant who ACTUALLY witnessed the raping of the young boy and DID not tell Paterno the entire story. Joe was under the impression that they were horsing around in the shower. Joe told his boss as I would have told mine, and allowed the judicial system to take care of it. Probably never thought about it again until the Grand Jury summons. McCreary is the guiltiest of them all and no mention of him. HE should have called 911 immediately and told Paterno the exact details of the RAPE.

Oh, Joe Pa-shaw! Paterno properly "rewarded" McQueary for staying quiet all these years by bumping him from "graduate assistant" to Wide Receivers Coach.

You, too, can go forward in the world if you only keep pedophiles in business.

NCAA Bylaw 2.4 The Principles of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program.

For anyone claiming this has nothing to do with the football program.

Bingo! Excellent post.

And here I saw an ESPN interview yesterday where he claimed "no need" for the NCAA to get involved.

These journalists forget that ethics is a wee bit broader than they allow for.

The NCAA and Big 10 needs to step with with disciplinary action.

CBSSports.com wire reports Nov. 9, 2011 A chronological look at the case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, based on a grand jury report in Pennsylvania state court. Some key dates in Penn State football history are included. Sandusky has been charged with 40 criminal counts, accusing him of serial sex abuse of minors. 1969: Jerry Sandusky starts his coaching career at Penn State University as a defensive line coach. 1977: Jerry Sandusky founds The Second Mile. It begins as a group foster home dedicated to helping troubled boys and grows into a charity dedicated to helping children with absent or dysfunctional families. January 1983: Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football’s national champion for the 1982 season. January 1987: Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football’s national champion for the 1986 season. 1994: Boy known as Victim 7 in the report meets Sandusky through The Second Mile program at about the age of 10. 1994-95: Boy known as Victim 6 meets Sandusky at a Second Mile picnic at Spring Creek Park when he is 7 or 8 years old. 1995-96: Boy known as Victim 5, meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is 7 or 8, in second or third grade. 1996-97: Boy known as Victim 4, at the age of 12 or 13, meets Sandusky while he is in his second year participating in The Second Mile program. 1996-98: Victim 5 is taken to the locker rooms and showers at Penn State by Sandusky when he is 8 to 10 years old. Jan. 1, 1998: Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky’s wife, as a member of Sandusky’s family party for the 1998 Outback Bowl. 1998: Victim 6 is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old. When Victim 6 is dropped off at home, his hair is wet from showering with Sandusky. His mother reports the incident to the university police, who investigate. Detective Ronald Schreffler testifies that he and State College Police Department Detective Ralph Ralston, with the consent of the mother of Victim 6, eavesdrop on two conversations the mother of Victim 6 has with Sandusky. Sandusky says he has showered with other boys and Victim 6’s mother tries to make Sandusky promise never to shower with a boy again but he will not. At the end of the second conversation, after Sandusky is told he cannot see Victim 6 anymore, Schreffler testifies Sandusky says, “I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won’t get it from you. I wish I were dead.” Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong. The case is closed after then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar decides there will be no criminal charge. June 1999: Sandusky retires from Penn State but still holds emeritus status. Dec. 28, 1999: Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky’s wife, as a member of Sandusky’s family party for the 1999 Alamo Bowl. Summer 2000: Boy known as Victim 3 meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is between seventh and eighth grade. Fall 2000: A janitor named James Calhoun observes Sandusky in the showers of the Lasch Football Building with a young boy — known as Victim 8 — pinned up against the wall and performing oral sex on the boy. He tells other janitorial staff immediately. Fellow Office of Physical Plant employee Ronald Petrosky cleans the showers at Lasch and sees Sandusky and the boy, who he describes as being between the ages of 11 and 13. Calhoun tells other physical plant employees what he saw, including Jay Witherite, his immediate supervisor. Witherite tells him to whom he should report the incident. Calhoun was a temporary employee and never makes a report. Victim 8’s identity is unknown. March 1, 2002: A Penn State graduate assistant enters the locker room at the Lasch Football Building. In the showers, he sees a naked boy, known as Victim 2, whose age he estimates to be 10 years old, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant tells his father immediately. March 2, 2002: In the morning, the graduate assistant calls coach Joe Paterno and goes to Paterno’s home, where he reports what he has seen. March 3, 2002: Paterno calls Tim Curley, Penn State athletic director, to his home the next day and reports a version of what the grad assistant had said. March 2002: Later in the month the graduate assistant is called to a meeting with Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz. The grad assistant reports what he has seen and Curley and Schultz say they will look into it. March 27, 2002 (approximate): The graduate assistant hears from Curley. He is told that Sandusky’s locker room keys are taken away and that the incident has been reported to The Second Mile. The graduate assistant is never questioned by university police and no other entity conducts an investigation until the graduate assistant testifies in Grand Jury in December 2010. 2005-2006: Boy known as Victim 1 says that meets Sandusky through The Second Mile at age 11 or 12. Spring 2007: During the 2007 track season, Sandusky begins spending time with Victim 1 weekly, having him stay overnight at his residence in College Township, Pa. Spring 2008: Termination of contact with Victim 1 occurs when he is a freshman in a Clinton County high school. After the boy’s mother calls the school to report sexual assault, Sandusky is barred from the school district attended by Victim 1 from that day forward and the matter is reported to authorities as mandated by law. Early 2009: An investigation by the Pennsylvania attorney general begins when a Clinton County, Pa. teen boy tells authorities that Sandusky has inappropriately touched him several times over a four-year period. September 2010: Sandusky retires from day-to-day involvement with The Second Mile, saying he wants to spend more time with family and handle personal matters. Nov. 5, 2011: Sandusky is arrested and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts. Nov. 7, 2011: Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly says Paterno is not a target of the investigation into how the school handled the accusations. But she refuses to say the same for university President Graham Spanier. Curley and Schultz, who have stepped down from their positions, surrender on charges that they failed to alert police to complaints against Sandusky. Nov. 8, 2011: Possible ninth victim of Sandusky contacts state police as calls for ouster of Paterno and Spanier grow in state and beyond. Penn State abruptly cancels Paterno’s regular weekly press conference. Nov. 9, 2011: Paterno announces he’ll retire at the end of the season.

Two things:

#1 Anyone reading this timeline who thinks Joe Paterno didn't know about his assistant coach's issues prior to 2002 is certifiable.

#2 "The Second Mile" should be named to "The Pedo File" because that's what they allowed happen to the kids they were supposedly trying to help.

Dear God, be with those kids who were raped by this monster.

Paterno properly "rewarded" McQueary for staying quiet all these years by bumping him from "graduate assistant" to Wide Receivers Coach.

That, of course, is speculation on your part, but what is truly amazing is that McQueery is also the recruit coordinator! Wow. Talk about somebody who will "never work in this town again". That guy, who walked away from a gay child rape and told his Dad, may as well change his name and move to China.

Wow! "Later in the month" Such urgency!

Sounds to me that the "news" these two rec'd from Paterno on March 3 was "ho-hum" yawn stuff. Not exactly "breaking news." A rerun of 1998, they probably thought.

No wonder no hurry. 'Twas all already pre-determined. Was perhaps even an extension of the '98 agreement...one whereby perhaps Sandusky said he would "retire" at age 55 if he went out quietly, without scandalizing "THE program."

You know what, I have no dog in this fight whatsoever. I have been a life-long WVU fan and had watched many a PSU game simply because they were PSU.

Being a big college football fan, I was crushed when I first heard about this because of the type of program that Joe Paterno ran. I didn't want to believe it, but he was an enabler of Jerry Sandusky. The more that comes out, along with the revelations (at least to me) about PSU being socialized into a queer haven, the sicker it makes me that Paterno ever allowed himself to be put in a position where his morals and standards could be compromised.

No matter how angry I am at him for doing nothing, I truly believe that he was pushed into a corner on this by the PSU faculty. I believe that his coerced compliance and the 02 incident may be a reason for Spanier wanting him gone in 04 and Paterno turned it around on him to stay 5 more years. It would have been dirty and crappy, especially for a man of morals, but I think that may have happened. No proof, just a hunch.

I also believe that Joe Paterno wants to talk. He wants to get in front of microphones and let all of the butterflies out of the envelope; the closed door meetings, the hush-hush deals, the cover up by the queer lovers on the staff, why he truly fired Sandusky in 99, all of it. If not, I do believe the weight of all of it will kill him soon as it would any other man who has principles.

Talk about somebody who will "never work in this town again

Were I to be a betting person...how much ya wanna bet that Penn State will be so "overwhelmed" by the turn of events that there McQueary will be on the sidelines Saturday, workin' away as WR coach?

I guess that will be the test case of who is the god of Penn State, the football program or a Being with Divinity?

That will be the test case of accountability: Will these pre-teen boys be sacrificed at the altar of the homosexual pedophiles so that at least Penn State can win "one more game?" Or will you be right: Will McQueary "never work in this town again."

Stay tuned all, for the next episode of, "As the 'Happy' Pedophiles Turn Yet Additional victims @ State College."

Just think...Penn State's 11-1 2005 season was all built upon the altar of staving off scandal...same is true of its almost 80 wins since this all broke in early 2002.

I generally agree with your post except that I think Joe lost his principles and he knows it and that will be what will kill him.

If Joe had not lost his principles, he would have gone public a long time ago.
