Posted on 11/10/2011 6:14:56 PM PST by fight_truth_decay
Herman Cain, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, has hired a high-profile defamation lawyer to keep an eye on the sexual harassment accusations made public by two women this week.
Atlanta attorney Lin Wood told Reuters Thursday he was not hired to scare, intimidate or threaten anyone from making statements, but to monitor the accusations against Cain and respond accordingly.
Wood, a top libel and defamation lawyer, was hired on Monday morning when it became clear that Sharon Bialek was about to become the first of four women alleging inappropriate behavior by Cain to go public with her accusations.
"I would certainly at some point and time give him my legal evaluation of whether any of these particular statements are potentially actionable," Wood said
Wood said he was retained by Cain and not by his campaign. He said he feels strongly about "guilt by accusation" cases. "I have seen how it has devastated the lives of other clients of mine and I would hate to see it happen to Mr. Cain."

Agreed. Too high profile and expensive just to be sitting around observing. More like getting the ducks lined up.
Are you crazy? Do you looking to justify them playing "victim"?
No. Only if he is absolutely sure that he can win should he do anything, and then primarily against the enablers.
Good for him, glad he’s done that. This is Clarence Thomas all over again BS by the lame stream media. Wonder when Anita Hill’s going to try to join in?
Could it not be said that is because lawyers have created the environment where one is needed so much more now than say, 30 years ago, 20 years, even 10 years ago?
And that sound could cause the perp to soil himself.
IMHO, he should have done this 10 days ago.
So that may be why this “press conference” they bandied about has not happened yet?
..and not getting the press coverage while investigations like with Holder continue, which is the media's fault! Lynne Cheney said that to CBS's Bob Schieffer in a recent interview. They control what they choose to report..
The Times and all their other outlets which include the Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, LA Times, 27 tv [mol] outlets are in bankrupcy [billions] and they still go to work every day and continue to put out their news--how's that work $$$?
but it sure isn’t boring. Go Cain......one lawyer needs another lawyer to answer for his client...Gloria may be in a pile of doggy doo doo
Very hard to trot out ‘victims’, when a tough lawyer will search every hole and verify all facts, looking for a reason to rake them over coals.
Why, no it never occured to us..when did such a silly thought occure to you?
Then I see the story [and post] on Cain hiring an attorney "to watch" for defamation issues and understand now she may have known she was being watched. Plus, Hannity a friend of Cain's for many years may have had some help with his questions? Did like how Hannity brought up Free Republic in his questions to her on her lack of response in representing Anita Broderick. Does that mean he likes us again. ;)
No, when you are in trouble, especially when you know you are innocent, and the “deck is stacked against you”, you’ll be glad to have a lawyer at your side. I’m glad Herman retained Lin Wood. BTW, I know, and tell, as many “lawyer” jokes as anyone. But, I still say: Everyone hates lawyers until they need one.
...this is in regard to watching the media as well attempting a public media hanging..these networks have been sued before and settled quickly [see above..who knew] and interviews are coming up tomorrow.
....a tough lawyer will search every hole...
Uh hmm..... poor choice of words for this subject matter. (LOL)
Love your Kitt-eh! Cute.
Ms. Allred knows how to play the media very well and the media is dumb enough to fall for her schtick. However, if Gloria Allred wants Herman Cain under oath, she should file a lawsuit and have him deposed.
But she cant file a lawsuit. The statute of limitations is long past.
So Ms. Allred is being silly but in a smart way. She knows her statements are pure inflammatory rhetoric, but it does raise a question in the minds of gullible people and the media who ask Why wont Herman Cain raise his right hand and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
But then we must ask, Why should he? And if he should, then we have to ask, Why shouldnt his accusers?
Glad to see that the “truth” of this situation has taken a lot of wind out of their sails. Funny how that works... they were on a lying rampage until someone was hired to ‘police’ the situation.
Remember who the lawyer is that they have to contend with, Wood.
I think I was quite appropo.
Gloria (Bloom) Allred
Some of her sex-discrimination suits include suing the Boy Scouts for not admitting girls for membership and KMART for having a boys toy section and a girls toy section.
Refers to President George W. Bush as the “President select” and once called Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas an “Uncle Tom”.
Referred to the Boy Scouts’ policy of admitting only boys as “gender apartheid” and, during the waning days of the 2003 California Gubernatorial Recall election, accused Arnold Schwarzenegger of being a Nazi sympathizer by stating that there were “six-million reasons not to vote” for him. No allegations of Schwarzenegger ties to Nazism have ever been substantiated.
Stated on her KABC radio show her belief that single women on welfare should be given taxpayer-funded fertility treatment if they are unable to conceive.
No kidding. Lin Wood is high octane. I almost fell out when he walked onstage at the press conference.
I think the media knows what to expect from Ms Allred, Esq. When Brit Hume was asked about her comment re: "stimulus package" he turned in his chair like he had seen or smelled something truely bad, his face got all contorted--he usually is poised, calm and professional...then he struggled with the word sleazy in either referencing her or the comment, was difficult to tell. [lol moment]
Catnapped from another FReeper; I love it, too.
Sparks Fly in Allred vs. Allred : Courts: Feminist attorney’s former husband is the one drawing media attention at bankruptcy hearing.
February 26, 1992
Gloria Allred, the outspoken feminist attorney known for trying cases in both the courtroom and the media, is feeling the sting of such tactics in a long-simmering divorce dispute that has wended its way to U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Her adversary is her former husband, William C. Allred, a onetime aerospace entrepreneur who used to be portrayed as a docile spouse overshadowed by his famous wife. He later achieved notoriety as the “estranged husband” convicted of defrauding the U.S. government.
This will not prove good for Cain.
More than anything Cain needs to do a deep review his advisors, especially the campaign manager Block, these guys are killing him with what my Wife calls “gas lighting”.
Read that Shakespearean quote in context. It’s been taken out of context for centuries.
People keep saying that yet his numbers keep going up and his fundraising keeps getting better and better.
Yep, Block is a liability, but everything else seems to actually be helping with the people (if you ignore the media and look at measurable results).
I don’t like her either, but have you watched Allred in previous cases? She is a very effective vicious barracuda, right or wrong. Mr. Woods might draw back a bloody nub.
Anytime Allred gets involved its serious as a heart attack.
Allred describes her own experience as a single mother as formative - she gave birth to her daughter while still a student and split from her husband soon after. ‘When I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania I had a baby in one arm, a diploma in the other and I didn’t know where I was going in life,’ she says. ‘I was a single mother when my child was little. I was not legally required to take care of her. I could have had someone else take care of my child but I did it because that was my moral obligation and also it was a joy and I felt it was in the best interests of the child.’
Personal experiences played a large part in Allred’s decision to practise the kind of law she does - she has been a teenage bride, single mother, rape victim and double divorcee - seismic events she documents with matter-of-fact candour in her recent autobiography-cum-legal-advice book, Fight Back and Win.
‘I didn’t tell the authorities at the time because I didn’t think they’d believe an American girl against a well-known and respected doctor,’ Allred writes of the 1966 gunpoint rape in Mexico by a doctor who had asked her out for dinner.
Back in America she discovered she was pregnant and underwent an illegal abortion that almost killed her. She was rushed to hospital, haemorrhaging badly. ‘I remember one nurse saying, “This will teach you a lesson.”’
Born Gloria Rachel Bloom in Philadelphia to poor Jewish parents - a door-to-door salesman and his English wife - Allred met and married her first husband, Peyton Bray, at university. By 19 she was pregnant. Then she discovered her husband had bipolar disorder (he later committed suicide) and they were divorced before she graduated. Back at home with her parents, Allred took Bray to court for child support. He was eventually jailed for non-payment.
Later, after a masters degree in education, she became a teacher and moved to the Los Angeles black ghetto of Watts a year after the 1965 riots. Aged 30, she began studying law and working voluntarily for the National Organization for Women, meeting rape victims who had been too scared to speak out.
By now she was married to her second husband, the businessman William Allred, and in 1976 founded Allred, Maroko & Goldberg with two fellow law graduates. They focused on civil rights, discrimination cases and family law. ‘At the time I didn’t know anyone willing to be called a feminist attorney,’ she says. ‘But I insisted on the term because I felt it was important for people to get a positive connotation of the word.’
Thanks for your reply - I did intend my questions to be serious ones. As a manager I received sexual harassment training many times, and everything I saw from Ms. Bialek seemed contradictory. There should be serious consequences when it happens, but false charges should be treated the same way.
Allred's other client, Rachael whats her name who was with golfer Woods, entered a addiction clinic afterward with Dr Drew. I actually liked the woman. Her life went bad after her finacee died on 9/11 in the Towers. Same with "Can't we all get along"-Rodney King who entered treatment as well. Both were pretty soft spoken individuals --just was a bad time in their lives with the media becoming judge and jury as they got caught up in high profile situations.
Allred's newest client may need treatment herself-time will tell.
Yet she remains a polarising figure, given her track record of both the laudable and the joke-worthy. To her critics she’s an exhibitionist who not so much tackles as manufactures injustices - such as the time she sued the Boy Scouts for not admitting girls, accusing them of ‘gender apartheid’ - and relies heavily on trial by public opinion.
Her showy tactics - marches, sit-ins, fasts - have also come under fire. But they have often won results. In 1981 she presented a chastity belt to a senator who was an anti-abortion campaigner at a televised public hearing. ( He later claimed he had been ‘molested by a slick, butch lawyeress’.
Allred successfully sued for libel.) In 1987, representing a woman denied entry to a men-only private members club, she famously strode into the steam room with a tape measure, singing Peggy Lee’s Is That All There Is?
Methinks you are skirting a zot FRiend... (FR used quite loosely).
Born in Philadelphia to poor parents who had only eighth-grade educations, Allred attended the University of Pennsylvania, marrying a fellow student her sophomore year. Peyton Bray, her blue-blooded husband, became abusive and had a mental breakdown, and by the time Allred was a senior, she was a divorced single mother. Bray, who suffered from bipolar disorder, eventually committed suicide, and their daughter took her mother’s maiden name.
Allred’s second marriage lasted longer she wed businessman William Allred in 1968 and they divorced in 1987 but when asked if she might ever remarry, she retorts, “Why would I do that?”
But Allred is a doting mother and grandmother, and she is proud of Bloom, a divorced attorney, mother of two, and legal analyst for CNN and CBS News. Often asked what it was like to grow up as Gloria Allred’s daughter, Bloom always answers with one word: “Empowering.”

What's black and tan and looks good on a lawyer?
Clearly, you haven't done your homework on Woods. The only nub here is yours.
As it should be. You do not have the intelligence required to make a voting decision. Best you stay home...and learn how to spell.
There was a report on FR a day or two ago that a Ras Poll showed “women” were jumping off the Cain Train BIG TIME.
Regardless of the money or his standing prior to the Primaries, loosing women voters is not the way to get nominated.
Rape is a different matter.
I doubt many women [men] can say they have not been hit on by a family friend, business associate, client etc
The training classes just protect the company in awareness, social responsibility needed to protect themselves in describing themselves as a safe and happy workplace.
I dont see where it says women are jumping off the Cain Train. Perhaps I missed it.
Women jumped on the Clinton train afterward his BJ, it appeared--the stars seem to line up.--one I remember was the star in Sex in the City's, Kim Cattrall. There seem to be always a smiling star in his midst.
There are financial supporters riding long term, then just daily commuters who are just that. How can anyone tell..really?
Right, I have seen that he’s had one high profile case, Jewell. Heck Edwards was the Best in his field too.
My point is that Allred should never be poopooed even though she almost always looks hair-brained on TV. She is effective! I am not saying she is right or her clients are right, just EFFECTIVE and mean as a striped spider.
There won’t be any law suits, that would be the worst for Cain no matter the final outcome. The last thing he needs is to keep this BS out front for months and months. Allred WILL do just that unless Cain can come up with real proof.
Not the same report I saw here on a Ras Poll. Wish I had Bmarked it.
Also if you read the entire Ras posting you linked it showes 51% think not nin Cain’s favor regarding the allegations.
I still assume he did not do something stupid, but what I think or anyone here thinks, there can be a great difference between pre-Primary polling and political junky support and actual Primary votes.
I love this Lin Wood and want him to represent me if I ....well, I don’t know what I might need to hire him for..but if I do, I want him in my corner.
You. have. no. clue.
