The Weekly Standard ^ | 11/14/11 | Daniel Halper

Posted on 11/14/2011 4:49:05 PM PST by katiedidit1

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain was asked a simple question by the editorial board of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: "So you agreed with President Obama on Libya, or not?" The response, nearly five minutes long, is painful to watch:

That was good.

Now maybe you can recreate the 3 am conversation that Newt had with his wife when he told her that he was out catting around with another woman.

Oh wait. He didn’t have that 3 am conversation. Sorry. I suppose you need to have character, even if you don’t need consultants.

Between this and the Saturday night debate, it has not been a good week for Cain.

I agree. Cain's a nice guy, a true patriot, a hard worker, loves his country, but appears clueless on most topics.

Obama would destroy him in a debate.

Your link said Gloria Cain is a registered Democrat.

This did not support your ridiculous assertion that Gloria Cain is a Liberal, much less your equation of Gloria Cain with Nancy Pelosi.

I look forward to your link on how the “EPA” and “Freddie Mac” donated to political campaigns.

The interview was meant for print. The video was meant to substantiate the written transcript. Cain is responding as he would for a PRINT interview.

Let’s knock off the anti-Republican assaults, yeah. If there’s real EVIDENCE against a Republican, let’s dig into it. But the attacks against Cain are baseless and out-of-context.

OK, you want Cain destroyed.

Who is your candidate? It’s clear that that person will win the primary only by destroying the other candidates. Or do you think your preferred candidate can stand on the issues alone?

Of the group running only two are up to the task of smacking down Obama in a debate, Romney and Newt. Pains me to say it, but it appears that is what we are left with. God, I wish things would have turned out differently for Palin.

...and the Cain people call Perry dumb???? Geez, after the last debate I thought old Herman was a little dense...now I know it! LOL.

Cain's toast...he needs to drop out and get out of Perry's way.

Nah! A 3 a.m. conversation from Newt to his wife, is of no concern to me. I'm not his judge and jury.

A 3 a.m. conversation of a President in a catastrophic or urgent matter, is and should be of great concern to all. How a President would respond is no JOKING matter, but Cain can't Hep' himself, all he does is joke about things and issues with mumbo jumbo doublespeak. When caught, it's back to "What I meant was". who needs that?

I do believe he has the Political Talk (doubletalk) down pat.

Herman Cain needs a foreign affairs advisor, such as Rice, Powell, Bolton, and Armitage.

I think that Mr. Cain is start enough to know that the ONLY candidate who has been read into the intel on Libya or any other recent event for that matter. Much of what we hear and see in the news is conjecture or misinformation. If other candidates want to regurgitate that as fact, they do so at their own peril.

I had a Deputy Commander (LTC) whose favorite statement was "you don't know what you don't know" And right now there is much we don't know. It is best if all candidates proceed with that mindset, lest they have a rude awakening later when they actually get to see the files...

Cain has en engaging personality, butI is completely uninformed and ignorant, and unfortunately not very well spoken. Obama was all of the above, with the exception of engaging, although his fans luuvved him no matter what.

But that was because Obama was the Dem dream candidate, while Cain is the blank screen onto which GOPers are projecting their quasi- Dem dream.

I just watched this for the first time and man am I disgusted at some of our fellow conservatives. We’ve had about umpteen threads posted on this, all representing it as some sort of TV interview. This appears to be video of a discussion with what appears a Newspaper editorial board. Exactly as you said, an interview for a print story. I seriously doubt Cain ever thought that video from this discussion would be released to the public. I guess shame on him for letting his guard down, but I can’t believe that fellow Conservatives would be such willing accomplices to media cheap shots.

>>Sure they all make mistakes but this one was painful to watch.<<

So was Perry’s. I’m not perfect. I don’t expect a candidate to be either.

Yes.

The other thing is this: while there may have been elections where the presidential debates mattered quite a bit, the country is so polarized now, that I’m not sure this cycle will be in that category in the least.

I can’t imagine that any hard-core Obama/Dem supporter would give a rat’s behind how Obama does in the presidential debates. They are going to vote for Obama.

Likewise, I can’t imagine that any hard-core “anyone-but-Obama” voter is going to give a rat’s behind how the GOP nominee does in the presidential debates. They are going to vote for the GOP nominee.

And if the argument is “yes, but . . . but . . . there are so many Independents, and people in the middle, and . . . and . . .”

I just don’t think so. Not this time. And besides, how in the world does one get “in the middle” anyway, politically? By not paying attention, that’s how. So there again the debates are just not going to be the be-all and end-all of this election.
