I have never owned a gun. Matter of fact, I have fired a gun a grand total of one time in my life. I shouldered a shotgun out in the north Georgia woods when I was nineteen years old and fired at a milk bottle filled with water as a target. The kick from the gun nearly tore my shoulder off, since I obviously had no clue what I was doing. I have no idea if I came close to hitting that jug.
I have never wanted to own a gun. I fish. No need to shoot fish, though I am sure that takes place. I have never been hunting. I am not opposed to it in any way; it just works out that I have never been asked to join a hunting party by my father or brother-in-law -- and considering my lifetime gun résumé to this point, that is, for their sake, likely a very good thing.
What I have done is held a pistol in self-defense. Robbed at gunpoint when I was working at a gas station off Interstate 20 east of Atlanta in 1978, I grabbed the pistol the owner kept under the counter and (for some silly eighteen-year-old-full-of-vinegar-manhood-thingy) chased the dirtbag out the door. Of course, I had already hit the silent alarm, and the next person yelling at me to drop the gun was the second person who had pointed a gun at me in the span of six minutes -- only he was wearing a cool blue uniform and waving a standard-issue .357 magnum of the DeKalb County Police Department.
So my personal, limited experience with guns is not good. Actually it's just this side of tragic. But I have considered, and now again...

Anyhow... I cna’t imagine my house being shot at. Reckon as territorial as I am, I might do something stupitt.
You can buy a basic, quality pump shotgun new for ~$200. I like my Saiga 12 a lot, totally reliable in my experience, but back then it cost $515 and lots more now. It did kinda spoil me ‘cause it’s semi-auto. I drool over Kel-Tec’s new double-tube bullpup shotgun, tho it’s not yet hit the market. Besides, my gun-buying budget is busted. ROFLMAO. I recall in my college years that I lacked for some dynamite to go fishin' but I remembered something my ranger qualified buddy once told me on the subject. I found a nice deep creek and slow moving water. I found a low hanging branch dangling out over that water. Took some management, but I was able to get myself and a fully loaded 7mm magnum bolt rifle into the right position to fire a round straight down into the water without fear of bounce. Lo and behold, the concussion of the round entering the water was enough to stun some fish and they floated up for dinner. Now I admit that the recoil durn near knocked me into the creek and it wasn't any fun getting into or out of position without taking a tumble with the rifle, but it sure as heck was faster than plopping a rod and a worm into the water. Fed me and two roommates, too. All of us future army officers were quite smug sippin' beer that night after dinner. There is no single correct way to any conclusion. All is technique.
The entertaining part of it was how they spent so much time on each show explaining how a core ‘democracy’ is based on rabble-rousers, err 'protestors', blocking lawful activities and taking over others property and generally being a nuisance. That lib Gene Robinson said "Yes it's messy, it's inconvenient but it's democracy"
Yet remember when the libs and MSM claimed it was the end of Democracy and country when the Tea party staged lawful peaceful rallies??

Another “Yes” vote. But you need to do some research on your state’s laws and decide what you need the firearm for - home defense, personal carry, etc.
Handgun, 12 gauge pump, reach out rifle and a good utility knife to start.

In a hand gun, a 45 acp makes sense to me. Get a good one...a 1911, Springfield XD, or XDm, Walther, Kimber (if you have an unlimited budget). These are just a few that come to mind...there are many good hand gun manufacturers out there, both domestic and foreign. Do your home work and get good advice...
Glocks are popular, but I do not like them for their lack of safety. More accidental firings occur with Glock.
A good 45 semi-auto pistol will normally have more controlable recoil that smaller calibers. My XD 45 is much more controlable than a friend’s Walther P40 that has been modified with tighter springs to better manage recoil. My 45 comes back toward me, the Walther has a lot of barrel lift. I can be back on target quicker with my XD 45.
I am no expert, but I have had some good advice from experts. I have a friend who was a law enforcement trainer/coach in Montana...he helped me with my selections and has done a good job of teaching me how to use them...SAFELY!
Of course, once you have a gun or two, then ammo choices are next...

For first shot or two I’d use a nonpenetrating round so just pop them in the torso. Remaining rounds would be something damaging.
As far as not living in the real world is concerned, if you’re under threat by an invader, you’re probably in a world you’re very unfamiliar with. I have to use my imagination.
I’ve posted questions about guns off and on for a long time. They always bring forth some kill-em macho men.

The main reason for owning a gun is because it would make me feel more secure. Odds are next to nil that I’d ever use it on a person. Feeling better is what it’s all about for me.
If you want the best:
Ruger 10/22 .22 - get a few mags for this. .22 is cheap.
Glock 26/19 - 9mm is great ammo and Glocks always go bang when it matters. 26/19 are concealable.
Remington 870 / Mossberg 500 - 12 Gauge Shotgun
Bushmaster/Colt/Rock River - AR 15 .223 w eotech or similar sighting.
With that arsenal you are go to go.

I have a friend who has a CZ9 that I really like. I want to try the Sig. And try out the Glock again before I decide on the 9mm.
I haven’t even tried a shotgun yet.
There is so much to learn and I’ve barely scratched the surface.
John sounds like a basket case!
First: when everyone says Remi 870 / mossberg 500 for shotgun - its for a reason. I have a saiga and a bennelli as well. But the Mossberg / Remi are the workhorses for sure.
Second - Practice and shoot everything you can. I love Glocks since they are super reliable and simple. you can also interchange magazines for the 17/19/26 I have friends who ha\ve Sigs and HK’s. The Sigs w a full magazine are heavy and the HK have way too long trigger pull for my liking.
Third - .22 Rifle is a must. 10/22 Ruger is the best, but i also have a Marlin Papoose that is increbile for its size and weight. A .22 rifle is the best $299 you will ever spend on guns.
Fourth - AR/AK. If you want to go big - get an AR or an AK. The two are very different. AR is better for accuracy , the AK better for war and spray and pray. You can get an AK for about 600, a good AR for about 900. I have a cienor .22 conversion kit for my AR and it is awesome.
Fifth - ammo - buy buy buy buy buy. You can never have enough.
Sixth - go to gun shows and load up on ammo boxes, and other stuff you cant buy in stores like extra parts, high cap mags, etc.
Seventh - if the wife is a pain in the ass, take her to the range for a day or two and she will be fine.
A 10/22 Ruger is a fum gun but it is not high on the accuracy scale. I have one, and I also have a Remington .22 pump. The remington is far more accurate, and consistent, and will also shoot the same .22LR cartridge about 1000 feet farther.
On second thought, maybe you'd be better off just hiring some security personnel...
You are right about the Ruger 10/22s not being accurate at least as they come out of the box. They are accurate enough tho for nearly all purposes and people dress them up with match barrels and other things to make them shoot great.
As it comes out of the box, the cheap Marlin model 60 is a much more accurate rifle but it has a tubular mag which when empty, takes a long time to reload.
I would probably pick the 10/22 just for the fact there are so many mags and other accessories for it. You might even get lucky and get an accurate one.
Scaring them off is the better choice over killing, if it works.

I think the two prongs are negative and positive. You need both to get a good current running through the target. They need to hit the target in two different places. It’s still a single shot.

I *like* going to the range. I wish I had more time to do that.
I agree with buying stuff at the gun shows. It’s on my list. Again, scheduling is the problem. But I’m working on it.
I still consider myself a newbie but I’m learning!
