Should I Buy a Gun?
American Thinker ^ | November 17, 2011 | John Fricke

Posted on 11/17/2011 12:34:11 AM PST by neverdem

I have never owned a gun. Matter of fact, I have fired a gun a grand total of one time in my life. I shouldered a shotgun out in the north Georgia woods when I was nineteen years old and fired at a milk bottle filled with water as a target. The kick from the gun nearly tore my shoulder off, since I obviously had no clue what I was doing. I have no idea if I came close to hitting that jug.

I have never wanted to own a gun. I fish. No need to shoot fish, though I am sure that takes place. I have never been hunting. I am not opposed to it in any way; it just works out that I have never been asked to join a hunting party by my father or brother-in-law -- and considering my lifetime gun résumé to this point, that is, for their sake, likely a very good thing.

What I have done is held a pistol in self-defense. Robbed at gunpoint when I was working at a gas station off Interstate 20 east of Atlanta in 1978, I grabbed the pistol the owner kept under the counter and (for some silly eighteen-year-old-full-of-vinegar-manhood-thingy) chased the dirtbag out the door. Of course, I had already hit the silent alarm, and the next person yelling at me to drop the gun was the second person who had pointed a gun at me in the span of six minutes -- only he was wearing a cool blue uniform and waving a standard-issue .357 magnum of the DeKalb County Police Department.

So my personal, limited experience with guns is not good. Actually it's just this side of tragic. But I have considered, and now again...

I bought two guns this year, after a somewhat internal struggle, but glad I did.

I used to own several guns. Then one day my canoe hit a submerged log that I couldn’t see. Damn thing tipped over with my entire arsenal in it. Can’t believe that log was so close to the surface since the water was at least 100’ deep where the guns fell in.

Not a single legal, stamped and registered gun left. Tragic.

Of course yes, the only thing better would be to buy more than one.

Amen... go to one of many training programs and spend a week learning all about firearms and how to handle and use them... then decide. Anyone that has absolutely no experience with arms and claims that a shotgun nearly tore his shoulder off... needs massive training and real world experience to be trusted with a firearm.

See Sinclair Lewis’ novel “It Can’t Happen Here” for a prophetic, step-by-step blueprint of what is happening today. That is the first thing I thought while reading Dunn’s column...

The first question you have to ask yourself is this:

Can I kill another human being?

If your answer is “no”, you should not posess a firearm.

If your answer is “yes”, then you need to try many, many different firearms....shotguns, pistols, etc to find what you feel comfortable with holding/shooting. Don’t worry about accuracy at first, just feel comfortable.

Then, practice, practice, practice and make it a routine. Practice as least once per month with the firearm. This will force you to clean it and keep it in good order and to keep your shooting skills up.

A good semi auto is much easier to handle than a revolver... an unexperienced person would have a negligent discharge much easier with a revolver.

A good 1911 style like a browning high power 9mm is a great start. Although even a good Kimber .45 isn’t hard to learn on, and recoil is quite manageable even for the younger shooters.

For a first gun, buy a semi-auto .22 rifle. The ammo is cheap, recoil negligable, noise low enough to be comfortable, and power, while on the low side for defense, much better than a non gun.

Of course, a pump shotgun offers a great deal of all that is needed if only one gun is desired. The huge advantage of a .22 is that it fosters the development of reasonable skill because it is cheap and comfortable to shoot.

For those who can afford it, Remington makes a pump action .22 rifle, the 572 fieldmaster, that has the same controls as the 870 shotgun. It is a bit pricey, though.

You can buy a lot of shotgun ammo for $500.

I've seen 19 year girls fire .454 Casulls effectively. I've seen 11 year old boys fire .30 carbine automags effectively. Just takes a little determination

Oh, and 10 year old boys fire Uzi's fine.

Everyone should get a shotgun, AR, .22, and a good pistol.

A while back I bought a S&W 642 Hammerless for my wife. It's made of Scandium and ridiculously lightweight. However, it can handle 357 Magnum. Thank God I shot it before my wife! It felt like a sledgehammer smashed my hand.

Reloaded with 38 Plus P and it handles quite well. Wife loves it.

Should I Buy a Gun?

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: Yes. Buy more than one: get a pistol and also a shotgun. Buy at least 500 rounds of ammo for each.

If you wait until it becomes obvious that you NEED a gun, then you won't be able to get one. Either lots of other people will have gotten similar ideas and the shelves will be empty, or the government will issue an order banning gun sales (as LA did during the Rodney King riots). Or trouble will just arrive at 3am when all the gun stores are closed.

“Should I buy a gun?”

Yes, without doubt, indubitably, soitainly, definitely,
in a New York minute, with no hesitation, and then learn to say, “I love you baby”.

IMHO
