Newt Gingrich's stumble out of the campaign gate -- causing him to lose his top advisors to Rick Perry -- might well be the best thing that has ever happened to his political career. That, along with his debate performances and a handful of other circumstances, explains why the former speaker of the House is now surging in the polls and why it is likely to continue.
And yes -- those are the words of one who has written Newt off for good on more than one occasion. And for what surely seemed like good reasons.
But those reasons seem long past now, as the former speaker has proven himself a far superior advocate to anyone else running of what it is that animates us on the conservative side. And it is this ability -- combined with our craving for someone who has this ability in light of the inarticulate Bush-McCain years -- that has convinced many to take a second, third, fourth, or fifth look at a man many of us had given up on. Yes, we know that Newt has not always acted like a conservative, and yes, he tends toward being an incessant government tinkerer. Yes, some of those marital issues are troubling, as was NY-23 and the David Gregory/Paul Ryan thing and most of all...the Pelosi global warming thing. Yes, we get all that.
Yet, even so, the daydream of Gingrich debating Obama on a stage bigger than merely the presidential contest is something more and more Tea Party folks and others are publicly fessin' up to sharing. Admit it: you were giving Newt a second look long before you dared say so out loud or post it on a message board.

There is a HUGE difference between Newt and Romney.

It would be like having to suddenly come out against school integration. Can't be done.
Second of all, Newt has already said what he would do -- what he WILL do, since he's calling for Lincoln-Douglas style debates, which Obama will surely deny him -- and that is follow Obama from campaign stop to campaign stop, just like Lincoln followed Douglas until Douglas finally conceded and accepted the debates.
So, in the video linked below, what is it in the Gingrich 21st Century Contract that you believe will further the slide? ...
The problem isn’t what he says regarding his contract, it’s the fact that much of what he has said and done in the last ten years goes against it.

Yes those unpopular Newt “decisions” will start in November 2012; he won’t even wait to January 2013 to thumb his nose at the conservatives.
Worst president in history, but the American people understand htat even “bad” people need representation, paraphrasing the late great Senator Hruska of NE.
It’s too bad. We have been fighting for our country’s life just to have people and tell us the only way to vote is for a pig in a polk or worse the same thing we have now. How sad and what a waste of our valuable effort and time.

This is not the problem. The problem -- and it isn't exclusive to FR, or the Left/Right schism, or even to politics -- is that too many people leap all the way from "I don't agree with you" to "I seriously hate you because I don't agree with you" all in one short step. People become so caught up in their points of disagreement, they fail to appreciate the areas where they do agree, where there is plenty of common ground. Sticking to politics, there truly are plenty of people who claim to hate the Left, but for whom no Republican is ever good enough. So while they're looking for the impossible, the possible is seldom accomplished.
I am guessing most Freepers are too young to be involved in politics in 1994. Or.....they are too old and their memories are not what they used to be :-)
It is 40% who really do not like Obama. 95% of them will vote for GOP regardless of who is the nominee. The other 40% will vote 95% democrat, regardless. With Cain, that could drop to 90%.
The mushy middle 20% are pliable, and if they perceive Newt as arrogant or know it all, he will be toast.

Obama debated Allan Keyes and won a Senate seat. Newt debated Kerry on global warming and it was a disaster for Newt. His pandering to Kerry did not sit well with the base.
I hope Newt learned a lesson and does not loss the base in the debates.
Your post exudes reality and common sense. However, reading posts in this thread, it looks like people are thinking emotionally instead of logically. They are so anxious to whoop Obama in debates, they have been seduced by Newt.
But as you said, the democrats don’t give a rat’s behind how the debates go. Their hate for Newt is bigger by orders of magnitude than that. Just go to any left wing blog site and search for any posts who are impressed with Newt in a positive manner. It is just the opposite.
Nothing will depress me more than re-election of the Kenyan socialist on November 6th, 2012. If Newt is our nominee, I better keep a bottle Scotch handy.
However, primaries have a long way to go. I will be surprised if Newt makes it all the way to the convention. In-Trade is giving him 12.6% chance of getting the nomination.

I find it amazing, though, that some think that because they don’t know (or don’t remember - yikes!) a pol’s history with the electorate, that history doesn’t exist or doesn’t matter.
I’m not saying Newt’s political history is insurmountable — this IS politics, after all. But dismissing or ignoring it’s potential impact seems unwise.
