LET'S GET REAL: A Newt Gingrich Nomination Would Be A Disaster For The Republican Party
Business Insider ^ | 112811 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

Newt Gingrich is now suddenly the candidate to beat Mitt Romney. And conservatives are said to be "salivating" at the chance of watching him debate President Obama.

But the truth is that a Newt Gingrich nomination would be a disaster for the Republican party: He cannot win.

And it would be a major setback to conservative causes, because Newt Gingrich tarnishes the right's ideals with his obvious corruption.

Let's take those two one at a time.

He cannot win:

The New Hampshire Union Leader credits Newt Gingrich with engineering the 1994 Republican Revolution when Republicans took their first majority in Congress in 50 years and Newt ascended to the role of Speaker.

But Gingrich deserves more credit for ship-wrecking that Revolution. Within just two years, Newt Gingrich shut-down the government and his approval rating dropped to just 25 percent. It never recovered.

By 1997, Gingrich was facing dozens of ethics charges. Although many of them were dismissed, he was fined an unprecedented $300,000 by the House Ethics Committee (still run by Republicans at the time), and admitted to giving "inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable statements were given to the committee." Newt did this precisely during a time he was trying to impeach the president for perjury.

If Cain is done, then it’s just like 2008 all over again, because none of the remaining candidates can prevail.

When Sarah Palin adds gravitas to Rick Perry's campaign, the optics will change drastically.

If it is Newt vs Romney, I choose Newt.

Quite a pathetic choice we are left with.

Newt's a self-important gasbag

And Romney isn't?

The problem with Perry is that he cannot be trusted in debates.

All will be forgiven if he can bring the country back from the abyss.

And Newt will eat Obama for breakfast in the debates, in a way no other candidate will be able to do.

Newt is in a class by himself with woman problems.

Cain is the set up “these things matter again”.

So dummies go for the fraud Newt and the Left pulls out the 30 years of skeletons on Newt with both barrels.

Are you really this dense?

And as of yet, not a single one of the allegations has been demonstrably proveable.

The most interesting development over the past weekend is the Perry-kristnas came out of the woodwork in force to pimp their guy again. They had quieted down a couple weeks ago and even the most die-hard Perrybots had pretty much given up trying to sell him to freepers. I figured most of them had become Newticals and the few ones still on the Perry bandwagon had sunk into a deep depression and were bitter that conservatives won't drool over Goodhair when he throws them red meat. I wasn't even bothering with Perry threads a week ago, it was too easy to kick 'em when he's down.

I guess think rumors of a Sheriff Joe endorsement will save Ricardo. I haven't even seen any "official" endorsement statement, and even if he did endorse Ricardo, I could care less. I didn't agree with Sheriff Joe's endorsement of Romney in 2008, either (and it sure didn't put Romney over the top, he could barely fend off Huckabee let alone McCain). The sheriff may be good at law enforcement, but he isn't a good judge of character when it comes to politicians.

But even though he's still in single digits, Perrybots have decided he's been revived. (like a few weeks ago when they were out in force trashing Cain over phony sexual harassment allegations and claiming this would somehow get voters to flock to Perry) They've been quite adamant in pushing Perry over the past few days. They'd have us believe that Cain has "no chance" now that he's in 3rd and polling around 16%, but somehow Perry is a "major player" and is on the verge of a "big comeback" when he's still hovering around 6th, polling 5%ish, and losing to Ron Paul. Must be fun to be a Perry supporter, you can just avoid reality.

They want to us that Perry was PRO-2ND AMENDMENT in TEXAS!!! (shocker, I've never seen that before, I tell ya. A statewide official in Texas doesn't support gun control. Pinch me.) And he's a CHRISTIAN candidate for President!!! AMAZING!! (can you believe it, a Christian running for office in this country?) I suppose the next thread will let us know that Rick Perry is an MALE governor. Yes, us haters won't like the FACT that his birth certificate verifies he is the MAKE gender. Wouldn't it be refreshing to have a MAN in the White House. Yessir, we all gotta vote for him cuz he's soooo MASCULINE and MANLY. Take that, Sarah Palin & Michele Bachmann! ;-)

Here's the kicker... BOTH the Perry-kristnas and Newticals make no apologies for their candidate's PRO-ILLEGAL stance. In fact, most of them openly support it and believe that rewarding illegals is GOOD for America. I haven't heard of the 'bots say "I don't agree with his illegal friendly stance, but I'm voting for him anyway cuz he's good on other issues". Perry's fans have argued over and over again that there's nothing wrong with giving ILLEGAL aliens discounted tuition and the 12 states that passed it have benefited from it. The Newticals think it's a "realistic solution" to create a new government buerueacy to determine which illegals "deserve" amnesty and to reward to people who have broken the law here for decades and have a bunch of kids there. They make no bones about their pro-illegal positions and tell us we HAVE to pander to "Hispanics" (illegal ones) to "win" (worked wonders for McCain in 2008?)

Since both their respective fans are unabashedly pro-illegal, I think it can only be a good thing if they're both out beating their chests and touting their guy over the next month. Perry and Newt can split the pro-illegal "compassionate" wing of the GOP and maybe they'll turn on each other and start bashing the other guy over who can pander to "Hispanics" to the most. (of course, both their respective fans throw a hissy fit if anyone criticizes their guy, and also swear they would NEVER go on another thread and attack another Republican presidential candidate.... bawahahaha!)

Agree. We have the chance to elect one of the greatest leaders in years. It will take time to undo all the damage by Obama but Newt will take this nation on the right path...not a single republican running is in Newt’s class.

AMEN he's the only adult in the room.... both parties!!!

Independents see Gingrich as part of what is wrong with Washington. Gingrich is unelectable.

Typo. MALE gender. But yes, it's a perfect trait for Perrybots to gloat about and pretend as if no other male has ever run for President. After all, they want to us to be in awe of the fact he's Christian. I guess they think all the other candidates for President are Buddhists and Hindu's.

Truer words have not been spoken.

Both camps suffer from the 'make the other guy look really bad so I look better' syndrome, though its worse with the Perrywinkles. Then there's the 'oh if _______ drops out, their supporters will support my guy!' Yeah, that worked really well with Palin supporters, didn't it?

It won't be long until Newt's past comes back to haunt him. His past is almost identical to Romney's when it comes to betraying conservatives and conservative principles.

Won't be long for Perry either, though the media pretty much laugh at him now like they do Ron Paul.

It will be fun to watch, that's for sure.

The problem with Perry is that he cannot be trusted in debates.

It is his weakest area in campaigning. I think the importance of the debates is being oversold and obama's ability to debate as well. Also, the problem facing Newt in the debates is expectations are so high he can't make any mistakes.

RE :"Looks like four more years of the Kenyan is in order."

Wouldnt surprise me, I scoffed at all the comments and vanities in 2010 claiming Obama wont run because he knows he cant win, and others claiming he doesnt want to win. If Pelosi was still Speaker, any of these losers would beat Obama.

If Obama wins he will inherit a huge mess from himself, of course he will be free to let his worst side out too,
