The weird ‘controversy’ of Tim Tebow
NY Post/National Review ^ | December 5, 2011 | Rich Lowery

In Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, the football gods have offered up a star that every father in America should be grateful for (provided they don’t root for a rival team in the AFC West).

Tebow is respectful, wholesome and a man of God. He has no obvious failings besides an inaccurate throwing arm.

If Disney were to concoct the plot of a movie about an altogether admirable young man who joins the NFL and is scorned by all the experts for his unorthodox style, yet wins week after week, Tebow would play the lead. In fact, at this point Disney could make it a documentary.

Nonetheless, Tim Tebow is considered “controversial.” It’s now cutting-edge to be a straight arrow. It’s countercultural to be an outspoken Christian. A player who embodies everything meant by the cliché “role model” is for his critics a figure of fun, or even hatred.

Tebow is widely mocked -SNIP-

By any reasonable standard, though, Tebow is a blessing. He won’t be getting arrested for groping a woman at a Halloween party (Julian Edelman), for accidently shooting himself with the Glock he smuggled into the dance club (Plaxico Burress) or for running a dog-fighting ring (Michael Vick).

He won’t be taking performance-enhancing drugs. He may or may not continue his success on the field, but he will do everything he can to respect his teammates and his God.

Here is a prominent player who will almost certainly never require fathers to make awkward explanations to their kids about some spectacular scandal. Rejoice, America, rejoice.

Dear Tim:
You’re welcome. Now please stop praying. I am trying to watch the Packers.
Love,
God

ESPN has absolutely been reaming the Penn State cover up.

You cannot coach heart, you cannot coach character.

Indeed. And you cannot coach speed, either.

Not the same type of thing, just something my high school head coach used to say over and over and your comment reminded me of it.

Where there's a shell, there's a way.

25 years ago, we had Ronald Reagan, Johnny Cash, and Bob Hope.
Today we have Obama, no cash, and no hope!

If you can't appreciate the pure beauty of the violin after hearing this, something's wrong with your ears.

Or you can get raw with these strings.

How about this gamechanger from America's Got Talent (which they SHOULD have won).

Either way, the violin is sweet yet lethal.

Do it!

I know just how my father felt with James Brown.

I never saw Jim Brown live. Saw him on TV. He was like Taylor in that he played in his own dimension.

Have to admit his public displays make me uneasy. It’s gotten to the point where I think he’s just grandstanding.

Jesus: “Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:5-6).

Who says he’s “praying”? ...”Let your light shine before men....that they may see your good works, and glorify the Lord in heaven.”

It’s the Great Separating hour, and this Age is about to close.

“Who says he’s “praying”?”

I don’t think he’s looking for ants on the ground.

The verse you speak of is about REWARD of prayer.

Tim is in WORSHIP, and glorifying the Lord. If fact, I would encourage him to WORSHIP, in what ever manner he chooses, even in the huddle with every player on one knee.

“How Great Thou Art”

They trash and then worship Tony,Su,Favre,Cutler,Lewis blah, blah, blah and I love it.

Indeed. And cannot coach speed, either.

As a racewalk and running coach I have a small quibble. You cannot coach speed that folks don't have but you can help them find the speed they do have. Very few people have a 2:15 marathon in them, but a surprisingly large number of have a 4:00 marathon and settle for a lesser performance.

Translating that to football I suggest the correct strength training, stretching, agility drills and other techniques can trim a hundredth or two of a second from a run, helping create a missed tackle.

No, it isn't B.S. but an incontrovertible fact. Suh’s bad image is the direct result of HIS ACTIONS. Tebow has done NOTHING that should produce the hatred. Suh’s problem is the result of consistent and repeated dirty plays and unnecessary personal fouls. Tebow has achieved a tsunami of hatred because of his virtues not his vices. There has never been anything like this and I have CLOSELY followed the NFL for forty years.

Your basic premise that Tebow is hated is flawed.

If fact, he has been praised by many many people inside and outside the league.

There is zero evidence that there is widespread hatred for this man.

Tebow is hated on a much wider level that any other athlete. He gets the full Two Minutes Hate treatment from the online Sorosphere (normally reserved for conservatives who are a threat to the Soros agenda like Palin and the Kochs) and that’s a whole separate dimension of hate than any other athlete in America has to endure, even LeBron and Michael Vick.

I never even heard of the Sorosphere. I was thinking of the Sports Media, none of whom exhibit what I would call Hate towards him.

I only know what I hear about him on the talk radio hear in Chicago. I never hear anything positive only mocking and obvious attempt to denigrate him as being an “idiot”, “a know-nothing”, “empty-headed”, “Jesus sucks the brain out of a believer’s head”. I have never heard such personal attacks on others sports figures.

This is what I'm talking about. The better Tebow does, the more he drives liberals to fits of insanity.
