Pop singer Dobie Gray of ‘Drift Away’ and ‘In Crowd’ fame dead in Nashville at age 69

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Dobie Gray, who hit the top of the music charts in 1973 with “Drift Away,” has died in Nashville. He was 69.

Drift Away was and is a classic.

In early 1965, our local AM rock blasters KRLA and KFWB began playing Dobie Gray's The "In" Crowd, and it became a local hit. However, KRLA was soon playing a different version, one which praised KRLA in its lyrics. I haven't heard that version since 1965.
