Christopher Hitchens, RIP (nice, worth the read)
Commentary Mag ^ | Peter Wehner

I have several recollections of Christopher Hitchens, who died yesterday at the age of 62.

The first is when I served in the George W. Bush White House and, in the first term, invited Christopher to speak to the White House staff. He spoke very well, of course, but what I most recall are a couple of things that occurred before the speech. The first is standing with him outside of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. He had gone out to smoke, which wasn’t unusual — and he confided to me that he was nervous, which was. The words “Christopher Hitchens” and “nervous” don’t usually belong in the same sentence. He also wore a tie, which he indicated to me he hadn’t done in years — and, he told me, he had gotten his shoes shined before the speech, which he didn’t recall ever having had done.

It wasn’t hard for me to fit the pieces together. Christopher felt it was an honor for him, a British citizen, to speak at the White House. For all his reputation for being a bon vivant, an iconoclast, and a man not known for his devotion to protocol, he was in fact quite moved to be a guest at one of the great symbols of American democracy. It was, I thought, something of a touching moment.

Any way you slice the apple, Christopher Hitchens was respected and probably loved. He was an honest man and I hope he is at peace with his soul. Godspeed to him and I will say a prayer for him as that is my belief.

I hope he did not refuse to put on the wedding garment, so to speak, even if it was at the last moment. That atheism finally proved an insufficient answer to him, in the nick of time. This in spite of all the damage he would have done on earth — it is not Christian to hold a grudge, though it is God’s role as judge to call finality sometime.

Didn’t Chistopher Hitchens speak at a Freep rally in DC years ago? Rest in peace CH.

Or might have had the same rebuke for Hitchens as he eventually did for Saul/Paul, ending up as a friend rather than an enemy. But the scripture, at most, doesn’t insinuate a time of extensive pondering between death and the judgment.

No charitable person hopes he wouldn’t. But whether God would be his enemy or friend is a matter left to the attitude he took.

Jesus loves us, this we know.

Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

is the standard bible-thumping opinion about Hitchens. Imagine their surprise when those morons are reincarnated in Bangladesh next round...

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that Jesus would have loved Hitchens. Hitchens called Mother Theresa a “b-tch”...

Still, I hope Hitchens has rest now and I offer condolences to the family.

“I wouldn’t go as far as to say that Jesus would have loved Hitchens. Hitchens called Mother Theresa a “b-tch”...”

I have no cause to believe that Jesus did not love everyone. Can there be a greater love than being willing to die for the salvation of all humanity? Objectively speaking, of course, salvation is conditioned on one’s faith in Christ and His work of atonement. The opinions of mortals as to the character and works of C. Hitchens are, finally, irrelevant.

I appreciate that Hitchens had the courage not to drink the Clinton Kool-Aid when so many of his colleagues would let him get away with everything. As far as atheist liberals go, he was one of my favorites.
