Best (religious) all the religious ones are better than the best secular ones.

Best (non religious) Cowboy Christmas Ball by The Killers

Gee, I dunno, Liblo. I really like All I Want for Christmas Is You, but Silent Night, Adeste Fideles, In the Deep Midwinter, and lots more are better.

The worst (not on the list) is Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire--unless I can think of one that's even worse.

Band Aid - Do they know it's Christmas

Last year there was an article where Geldoff admitted it may be the worst song ever recorded. He has nightmares about carolers come by the house singing it. Serves him right for writing it.

The music is nice because it was stolen from the excellent Lieutenant Kijé Troika melody by Prokofiev.

It’s no surprise to me that a music thief would trash the magical wonder of Christmas.

“Worst — that Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart song.”

Indeed. About as un-Christmas as can get. Hate that song. Putting the word “Christmas” in a song doesn’t make it a Christmas song.

One of the best--as far as popular music goes--is I'll Be Home for Christmas".

“Santa Baby” gives me the creeps. But I do love that Emerson, Lake, & Palmer “I Believe in Father Christmas” ... that’s a gorgeous song. I’ll listen to that in July.

Band Aid - Do they know it's Christmas

Insipid, awful, annoying. I want to claw out someones eyes. Damn song gets stuck in my head and I hate it vehemently!

"Feed the WOOORRRLLLD, Let them know it's Christmas time again" (sung 20 times in a row)

"Worst: “And So This Is Christmas” ...John and Yoko"

Amen to that!

Actually, there are so many execrable Christmas songs it's hard for my to single one out.

As to the best, an embarrassment of riches - I like the Renaissance motets like Byrd's "O Magnum Mysterium" and Gabrielli's "Hodie Christus Natus Est". Handel's Messiah, Bach's Magnificat, and a multitude of traditional Christmas hymns and carols.

Etiam non princeps sed usque ad genua, Principis Pacis!

"What? No mention of Snoopy's Christmas?"

Not quite a classic. This is not strictly Christmas, but it is a classic:

Charlie Brown Christmas Dance.

Wow! I never knew that about the Prokofiev/Troika thing. As soon as I you posted that, I went right to Youtube and found it, and you’re right, it’s not even sampled, it’s pretty much just lifted (at least in parts.) I’m listening to it now, and it’s really cool.

Look on the bright side - we don’t hear “Silent Night, 7:00 News” anymore.

Worst: “Last Christmas”

I was about to get a little defensive until I realized I was thinking of a different song. I was thinking of One Last Christmas by Matthew West. It's a somewhat sad but touching song about a family with a terminally ill boy who know he won't make it to the end of the year so they start celebrating Christmas (with the help of the neighbors) in September. Eventually the whole town gets in on it and he has a smile on his face to the last moment.

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Did you know
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Did you know
That your baby boy will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little boy
You’ve kissed the face of God

Mary, did you know?
The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Did you know
That your baby boy will one day rules the nations?
Did you know
That your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the Great I Am
