8 soldiers charged in private's 'apparent' suicide in Afghanistan
LA Times ^ | December 21st, 2011 | AP

In October, Danny Chen, a U.S. Army private from New York City, was found dead in a guard tower in southern Afghanistan. The official statement said he had sustained "an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."

On Wednesday, the Army announced that eight fellow soldiers have been charged in connection with his death. And a spokeswoman for the Chen family expressed doubts that Chen's death was actually a suicide.

In naming the men, the Army listed the charges faced by each one and said that more information would be published as it became available. The charges include dereliction of duty, maltreatment, assault and involuntary manslaughter.

“involuntary manslaughter”

Defined as “Homicide that is committed without the intent to kill, but with criminal recklessness or negligence.” Doesn’t sound like bullying to me.

This is a pretty pathetic story. What was the motive?

That charge is typically a training accident, accidental discharge, etc. If the guy is found in a tower with a round through the bottom of his chin then it’s either suicide, murder, or someone shot him by accident from the ground. They aren’t charging murder, so it’s an accidental shot or the soldier killed himself, and the army is claiming the charged soldiers drove him to it.
I’m guessing the guy was a queer, got harrassed, popped himself and the army is going to make an example of these eight soldiers that queers will not be bothered.

A blanket party was not sufficient?

If a guard falls asleep on duty he risks everyone elses life. Not that this was the case.

I don’t believe it for a minute. We had Koreans, Filipinos, ex-Cubans, Chinese, Puerto Ricans, and practically everything else when I was in the Navy and I can tell you that any “bullying” they are reporting is nothing but good natured teasing. If anyone got out of line, the rest of us would put him in his place. There is more to this story that they aren’t telling or more likely deliberately leaving out.

Nobody harrasses homos. If anyone is aware that they are homo mutants, it is because the homo mutant was already harrassing humans.

If the suicide was a homo, and the homo was harrassing humans, then justice has already been done.

I read it as his fellow soldiers were engaging in horseplay - threatening to shoot him in the head with his service pistol - from the reading of the charges probably “jokingly.” A round inadvertently goes off and he’s dead.

Not sure why everyone is fixating on a possible gay angle. If he were gay that angle would have been played up. It’s more likely the case that cause of all this was lowlife criminals who acted accordingly.

Didn’t read those details. Definitely changes everything if so.

I don’t care what this kid may have done wrong.

As a NCO, you don’t allow this kind of treatment (if the allegations are true) of soldiers. Period. There are systems in place to get rid of people who can’t hack it in a line unit.

You incorporate these young soldiers in your daily functions in a positive way. Not alienate them and treat them like garbage. There are more constructive ways to discipline someone.

If you can’t mentally or physically hack it in the Infantry, you don’t belong. If you are a disgusting human being with no honor or moral character ( like the article suggests ) then you don’t belong either.

Idiots should have taken an NRA firearms safety course, because apparently the military isn't teaching that to them like it should. Don't point your gun at anything you do not intend to kill, horseplay or not.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a radical flamer and they were sick of his pro homosexual garbage.

Good point, that certainly would justify whatever actions drove the private to suicide...../s

You're speculating Dude with absolutely no evidence to support your ignorant statement. You are one sick bastard and a disgrace to this site.......

"DeathBeforeDishonor"? You've just dishonored whatever military attachment you may claim.........

Agreed. Any one who has made it through basic and is in a deployed unit understands the brotherhodd between the soldiers, regardless of race/creed/color. Sure, there are those who never get it, but they are spotted quickly and hopefully weeded out. My son's guard unit had a Muslim soldier who was okay with the USA, but for some reason had a burr up his *ss about India and was outspoken about wanting to kill Indians. Needless to say, he was discharged.

Whatever degree of force is needed to stop an assault, or a sexual assault, or a pattern of such assaults, is justified.

Traditionally, a jury of one’s peers would determine whether excessive force was used; however, the concept and process of trial by jury of one’s peers has become as corrupted as every other corner of our society.

Actually I was speculating in order to illustrate how the media twists a story.
But being your ignorant response, Ill oblige..

I also know military members who refuse that “sensitivity” crap towards flamers.Nobody cares about their private life, but if they “tell without asking” which is Obamas new doctrine, theyll let it be known they should stay in their closet.

Bottom line, noone made that pathetic gutless whimpering coward off himself. If he was a man, he’d have sucked it up and still be alive instead of taking the cowards way out.
