BREAKING: Perry disqualified from Va. primary ballot

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, state GOP officials said Friday evening.

Perry’s campaign told state election officials it had submitted 11,911 signatures, but a Virginia Republican familiar with the situation said that the Texas governor did not submit the required 10,000.

Earlier Friday, the Republican Party of Virginia certified former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) to appear in the March ballot.

Four candidates — Romney, Perry, Paul and former House speaker Newt Gingrich — turned in thousands of signatures by the deadline. State party officials are spending the day certifying the signataries.

They have not examined Gingrich’s signatures yet, but expected to do so by late Friday night.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. to collect 10,000 signatures from across the state, including 400 from each congressional district.

Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann, Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum did not submit signatures, according to state GOP officials

If they are still counting Newts votes, I fail to see how they can be done with Perrys UNLESS they can show that like 4K signatures are bunk.

If he is just a couple hundred under, they had better be checking closer if they don’t want a legal challenge.

“Why drop this news now?
To detract from gains in Iowa? Where Perry is gaining ground?”

When would you prefer this news to be released?

I said that, probably others as well. But I am going on record — if Newt doesn’t make it on the ballot either (meaning my choices are Ron Paul and Mitt Romney), I’m going back to considering Santorum and Bachmann. And then I’m writing in a name.

I’m not big on conspiracies either, when it can be explained by simple human error.

If Newt doesn’t make the ballot, then I think we can ignore Virginia. Which would be a shame. But who will care which candidate wins when there’s only two of them?

Funny thing is someone wrote on another thread that if you submit 15,000 signatures, Virginia assumes you have enough and doesn’t even count them. In that case, I wonder if Mitt Romney just signed his own name 15,000 times.

It really makes Paul, Perry and Gingrich look bad though, since none of them submitted over 15,000. Why wasn’t there enough time to just stand outside Walmart until they hit the safe zone?

http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2011/12/gingrich-still-may-not-make-va-ballot-108580.html

“Romney is sure to make it because he turned in over 15,000 signatures: The state GOP has said they’ll not canvass the petitions of those candidates who reach that threshold.”

“But as Virginia campaign lawyer Chris Ashby notes, those candidates “who submit 14,999 or fewer, however, will undergo signature-by-signature scrutiny of his or her petitions — something no statewide candidate in recent memory ever has had to endure.””

Newt’s hasn’t been certified as of the last info published. He may well not have the 10,000 valid signatures either.

Perry submitted 11911 signatures. So all that they needed to find was 1192 non valid signatures or roughly 16.04 % of those submitted.

Virginia 49 delegates at stake out of 1144 needed for nomination or 4.02%.

I wasn't suggesting there was a conspiracy, rather outright incompetence on the part of the campaign.

Here is a fellow that has served 3 terms as Gov and 1 term as Lt Gov, who has been meticulous about voter fraud and who passed voter ID in Tx and I am to believe that suddenly he got sloppy?

What all of this points to is Romney being given the golden GOP key to the white house.

If every last conservative does not wake up and put an end to this it spells the end of the republic.

We need a conservative third party candidate to get behind or we are all screwed its that simple.

...the guys a goof.

Good enough for Texas but then what ain’t?”

I’m not in Texas now but grew up there and did a lot of business there. We were glad that “foreigners” thought like you. We sent a lot of smarty-pants Yankee dealmakers packing with a nice Stetson and without most of their money. I semi-retired early as a result.

There’s nothing better than a Princeton grad wearing a “what the hell happened” look on his face as he heads for the airport.

Actually, I haven’t seen an RPV report on Paul yet, so I don’t know that HE has qualified. He did have a lot more signatures, but not enough to “automatically qualify”.

And frankly, while we were told Romney had 15,000 signatures, I believe the RPV still needed to simply COUNT them to see that there were 15,000 before they accepted them without verification. I don’t know if they did that or not.

Usually the RPV sends media advisories for each thing they do, and so far I’ve only seen 2 — one to say that signatures had been received by 4 candidates, and the 2nd to say Perry didn’t have enough.

Until I see RPV advisories for the rest, I don’t think we’ll know.

I would presume however that ROmney have 15,000 countable signatures, because he’s well-organized. And I’m pretty sure Paul will have enough valid signatures, his supporters are fanatics.

I’m pissed at Perry, just like I was pissed at Bachmann/Santorum. I had 3 signatures in my house available to all of them, and no campaign contacted me to tell me where to go to sign. Gingrich finally did, but on the last day - -my wife was already out of town and I was at work all day.

When people are bugging you to let them sign your petitions, and you don’t let them know how — that is annoying.
