NY City, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle New Orleans - all "progressive" cities.

Tip of the iceberg. Every state has its share of concentrated Democrat parasite nests ("cities").
That's where most Democrat votes come from.

I believe a state has already declared bankruptcy in the past. So a precedent may have already been set.

On a percentage basis and other metrics, ILL-ANNOY is in far worse shape. It is a race to the bottom.

California is a peculiar place to say the least. I go back yearly to visit family over the holidays, so the gradual changes are more apparent. The money is gradually being squeezed into the dense coastal areas, while the truly productive areas wither on the vine. Case in point: the Berkeley/Richmond/Emeryville area is alive with new store fronts and townhouse living. Jam packed with people and money. These are the ones too busy chasing material things and sucking on a starbucks like a nipple to notice or care about the deplorable political and fiscal state of the state. You’d think by looking around we were in a booming economy. However, in contrast to that apparent wealth, the once verdant central valley is a depression era shadow of its former self, with once thriving communities on life support. Barely recognizable from just a few short decades ago. California is a land of contrasts.

Glad I visited a few times during the ‘80s while California was still the Golden State.

What accomplishments and by whom? Dr. Renee Richards? He/she never won a major tennis tournament even after the reverse-addadictomy.

California has, by design and deliberation, continued to spend money they do not have. California is the 5th largest economy in the world. The leadership (democrats) of California have concluded they will spend money they do not have, because, like Greece, they have determined the other 49 states cannot allow them to fail without the rest of the country falling into the abyss. They do not care one wit about being responsible. They have committed theft against the taxpayers of California, and now, approaching the point of taxpayer revolt, they spend, borrowing, calcuating the rest of us will have to bail them out. They are at the point,... well past that point of no return. We are their prey...and they intend on taking it from the rest of the country.

The only thing that will save Californicatia is a total collapse. Then they can start from scratch and get rid of all of the dead weight.

No. They’ve thrown it to the Canadian wolves. Google the Canadian Wolf. They are distributing breeding pairs in California, Oregon, Washington and Montana to drive out the farmer and rancher so the corporation farms can take over!

It better no. It is the 10th largest World economy. We cannot afford to have California fail. I know that most people here hate Cali, but it actually is very important to our economy.

I believe a state has already declared bankruptcy in the past. So a precedent may have already been set.

States have gone broke in the past...but had no recourse to bankruptcy.

During the early 1800's several states went bust -- usually from having over-committed to funding transportation facilities (canals, roads, railroads, etc.).

They had no choice but to work their way out of it -- negotiating deals, extending payouts, etc. It took some of them the better part of two decades to get clean.

Municipalities and counties can declare bankruptcy but there is still no provision for states to take that route.

I read a while back that a few of the southern counties wanted to suceed from CA. I would love to see that, then I would love to see Northern CA suceed to become Sequioa.

10% sales tax? I bet the stores near Oregon - no sales tax IIRC - are being hurt.

Is it too late to save the Golden State?

Yes. The people that turned wild California into the Golden State no longer live there in any great numbers and even if they did they are legally hamstrung or outright forbidden to sustain their civilization. An entirely alien people (thanks el Presidente Bush) have been imported to help create a semi-feudal State were a small cadre of men living in opulent luxury control all the resources and industry and the vast majority of the population are ugly uneducated peasants that enjoy living squalor and bowing and scrapping to their masters. Demographics is destiny and California's destiny is to be like the rest of Mexico, a failed, third-world hell pit. The bad news is that the Republicrat/Dumbocan Party is going to do the rest of the country what it did to California.
