2012 Iowa Caucus Live Thread
Iowa GOP ^ | 1.3.12 | Free Vulcan

Posted on 01/03/2012 8:08:24 AM PST by Free Vulcan

Live thread to cover today's GOP caucus. News, predictions, opinions, totals, and the like.

Will be heading out about 4 pm or so to get our site ready and do a final review with the precinct chairs. I expect it to be bigger than 2008 with very heavy turnout and we are preparing for that.

We are also ready for disruptions. They simply won't be tolerated. The state party sent us a memo saying if there's any trouble call the cops immediately. Anyone trying to cause problems is going to get a rude awakening.

My predictions of the outcome are a narrow field with about a 10 point spread for the top five with Bachmann far behind in single digits:

Santorum - 24 Romney - 22 Paul - 20 Perry - 17 Gingrich - 14 Bachmann - 4 The Rest - 1

Think things are still in flux and many won't decide till right to the wire, so I'm not terribly confident of any predictions.

Fox interviewing Rick Perry. Perry was saying that the night is still young and that he still expects to prevail. Well he's in fifth place right now and will likely stay there now that 47% of the vote is in. Perry also mentioned he was heading straight to SC in the morning, so he is apparently bypassing NH altogether to focus his efforts in the South. By the way, his supporters in the background looked completely demoralized.

With nearly half the vote in, Santorum is about 300 votes ahead.

Only about 120,000 Iowans came out to vote tonight. About the same as four years ago.

Boy, Fox really wants Perry to drop out. They’ve done everything they can to say his campaign is hopeless.

What happened to fair and balanced?

Santorum should win, so many western counties yet to report.

Bad news, Romney should finish second.

Newt will beat obama, Romney probably won’t. Newt has the best plan of all the candidates for economic recovery, Romney’s plan is very weak, it very similar to obamas.

FOX News is lying and pimping for Romney 24/7.
+++++++++++
Thanks for the report. We need someone monitoring Faux News.
You’re the one. The rest of us? Well, we’re boycotting the Bash-Newt, Nominate-Romney and Elect-Obama Network.

I refuse to let my browser go below the Iowa map at the Faux web site. I like the totals and the map, but have the Romney web cam paused and sound muted.

Natural born means child of two citizen parents, just as the supreme court has said four times.

I’ve had Fox News on all night I I don’t see this bias everyone is wee wee’d up about. It is what it is, I have good filters and try to bear in mind the advice of the eminent Marvin Gaye “believe half of what you see, son, and none of what you hear”

wow

This thread is full of good points about every failing of each and every candidate. I’m getting a bad vibe about the election in november.

A losing senator from PA is not going to be the nominee. What happened to “senators do not make good presidents?” That fact seems to have escaped a lot of his supporters.

Iowa is quickly proving itself a joke. Open Primary with voters able to sign-up to vote tonight, including democrats and independents.

The actual number of “Republicans” who turned out were very low, according to Faux. Iowa is not a Republican state.

“Newt will be OK. He will leave Iowa (The Harkin State), and have a very good showing in the South.”

I agree, Newt will do just fine down the road. If I was Newt I would not spend to much time or resources in liberal New Hampshire. Get on down to South Carolina ASAP.

Fair & balanced? I kept clicking on CNN. At least you know where they are coming from, and they had some really spiffy technology.

“[Santorum] and NEwt need to pound the crap out of Romney because if ROmney gets to hang around he will end up with the most delegates since the big states sure to go for him will all be winner take all.”

Bingo!

Everyone else get on board or get the hell out of the way.

No Willard! No way! No how!
