Teen's Senior Pix Banned From Yearbook

DURANGO, Colo. -- A teenager said Durango High School is refusing to publish one of her senior photos in the yearbook.

Sydney Spies, 18, told the Durango Herald that administrators told her the senior portrait she submitted would not be printed in the yearbook because her attire in the photo violated dress code.

The newspaper said the high school requires that tops "fully cover the chest, back, abdomen and sides of the student."

The photo Spies submitted shows her wearing a yellow skirt with a black shawl that exposes her shoulders and midsection.

"We'll get the ACLU involved if they censor," said Sydney's mother, Miki Spies, on Facebook. "Don't say, 'Can't she just submit a different picture?' Censorship is wrong."

On Thursday evening, Miki Spies posted a longer comment on the controversy on her Facebook page:

"I wanted my daughter to chose a different photo but she is 18 and doesn't always listen! I knew this would be hard and it's proving to be. But when SHE chose this beautiful photo on my profile, I was 100% going to support her. Now that I know about Student Press Laws, I'm appalled that the administration disregarded the original vote by the student editors (4-0 in favor of Sydney Spies being able to use the photo) and got involved to overrule the photo. I guess word is spreading about this case all over the state and some people are talking about what a terrible mother I am. Some are upset at the administration is strong arming the students and some just think the picture is hot..."

The article said she didn’t think it was, but now is backing her daughter. Hard to say how much she “opposed”, but she points out her daughter is 18 and therefore not really subject to her mother’s wishes, directly anyway.

That’s just her uniform for her new and exciting job at the Bunny Ranch. Doesn’t this school want to encourage students to explore a vocation?

“”modeling” or “acting” career”

I enjoy a “turn of phrase” but this is the first time I’ve ever laughed at a “turn of parentheses” before! Bravo!

I bet that being bent over a railing is pretty routine for her.

Lovely girl, but seriously it’s a yearbook photo. School clothing laws apply. There’s Facebook and YouTube to show off your personal assets.

In my yearbook the girls were all in a black velvet off-the-shoulder drape and all the boys in tuxes.

Exactly. That’s the same thing they did for our senior pictures, but only for the seniors. Underclassmen were just normal head/shoulder shots.

Did the girls pics look like this? This is my mom's pic that she had made to send to my dad while he was in Vietnam.

Who the heck puts glamour shots on their FB page? Any woman on this forum will tell you that in that photo Spies has put her makeup on with a trowel. On second thought it is likely she had a makeup artist put it on for her.

If she is thinking that pose will get her a “modeling” career she may be disappointed. All the cosmetics in the world do not disguise the fact her bone structure sucks (for purposes of being a photo/runway model).

She sure as shootin ain’t no Marilyn or Jayne or even a Loni, no matter how much platinum blonde dye you stick on her hair.

Until she grows some (.)(.)’s, the black top really doesn’t serve much purpose anyway.

Well, the purpose was to make the girls look like they were dressed for the prom, which was held late in the year. It was more a low neckline than off-the shoulder. The clavicle shows. No individual poses. This was the ‘50s, and boys could not wear jeans. Jeans were work-pants. Haircuts were “normal,”or “buzzes.” A few guys wore ducktails. Oddly, this was a guy who was not flamboyant. And, ,while I am sharing,” though he was only about 5’8 and weighed about 160, he was the strongest guy in high school. If we had had a wrestling team, he would have been a champ. Not very agile, but when he wernt out for football in his junior or senior year --we had a new coach--he made the team and the coach used him as a line-backer.

And what about students who are listed as “Picture Not Available?” We all know that they’re vampires. They should sue to at least have a sketch artist do their picture for the book.

They didnt make them like that when I was in High School. Good thing too or else a lot of guys would have flunked out.

They sure did when I was in high school. This was the "conservative" mid-1980s, mind you. We had a clique of "metalhead" girls who came to class each day dressed as if they were auditioning for the "girl in a cage" role in a Ratt video. They'd go see all the hard rock bands when they came to town and come to class the next day showing off their backstage passes. They were all underage at the time. Nobody cared back then, least of all the rock stars they screwed. A few of them went on to brief pole dancing careers. Most are housewives these days.

This has been going on for a long time. Saw it when I was in high school.

Yep. Teenage girls dressing like sluts is nothing new. They wouldn't have tried to get such photos in the yearbook though.

She's nothing more than cute. These days, young ladies think that some bleach, red lipstick and eyebrow tweezers make them a perfect 10. Not so.
