JERUSALEM Iran is not our enemy. The regime that enriches itself while murdering, oppressing and impoverishing ordinary Iranians, the regime that incites genocide against Israel, threatens its neighbors in the Persian Gulf and vows to bring about a "world without America" that is our enemy. This was one of the key points driven home by a trio of extraordinary individuals gathered for a dinner in Tel Aviv last week.
At the table were Bernard Lewis, for my money the greatest living historian of the Middle East; Uri Lubrani, Israel's envoy to Iran before the fall of the Shah and an adviser to leaders of the Jewish state ever since; and Meir Dagan, a retired paratrooper, commando and general who was recruited in 2002 by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to rebuild the Mossad as an intelligence agency "with a knife in its teeth." A small group of American national-security professionals from Capitol Hill, the Defense Department, Homeland Security, even the D.C. police department broke pita with them.

The larger point is this: Guns don't kill people; people kill people. It is the regime that rules Iran, more than weapons or the facilities in which they are produced, that constitutes the real problem. From that it follows that changing the regime not destroying its hardware is the higher goal.

here we go. In the same vein as “we are not against Islam, just terrorism” Iran is not our enemy, the regime is....splitting hairs
The regular Iranian civilian is indeed not our enemy, and is most likely kindly disposed toward us. Just as the regular North Korean civilian is not our enemy.
Unfortunately, the bad guys in charge are very much our enemy, and the enemy of their own people.
I guess all that “we are going to kill you” is just a joke.
When did the leaders of the world unanimously decide settle their differences mano a mano? Any country (and its entire population)that threatens to shut down significant sea commerce is an enemy of the civilized world.
“Unfortunately, the bad guys in charge are very much our enemy, and the enemy of their own people.”
Yes, that’s exactly what the article says. That’s why regime change is the answer.
Yeah it is just like the people who say islam isn’t the enemy, terrorism is. Meanwhile mosques are being built all over the place preaching jihad.
If you don't believe in YHvH and His WORDshalom b'SHEM Yah'shua HaMashiach
this is a wonderful statement based only
on the spirit of man.G-d's WORD clearly call out the
Prince of Persia and his allies Gog
and Magog will come against the world. The desire of Islam is to create a world-wide Caliphate.
North Korea is not our enemy either , Just the people who live there.
Are these people rally that stupid?
The current US administration had an opportunity to support a "Persian Spring" a couple years ago and did nothing. It was worse than the Russians holding off taking Warsaw and allowing the Nazis to clean up what remained of the Jews in the ghetto and the remnants of Poles who could have caused some problems for Stalin. The overthrow of the mullahs was a clear and immediate American interest and yet they did exactly nothing.
The bloodshed to come will be an ocean in comparison to what it would have taken back then and all of it, in my opinion, belongs on the hands of Obama, Rodham-Clinton, and the rest of these cowardly fools.
oh, don’t forget that evil devil Carter who is the one who took out the Shah in the first place and allowed the Islamic devils to take over.
“What Clifford May fails to comprehend is that the Assahollah Khomeini and his subsequent mad mullahs who seized power in ‘79 have had more than 30 years to twist and warp the culture, to breed and cultivate that whole ‘Great Satan’ mentality, despite those who say that Iranians “really like America”.”
What you fail to understand, is that it hasn’t worked.
Go talk to Iranians.
who pray tell is supporting the Islamic devils in charge? Believe me, it is not just 20 or so people holding the entire populace under their thumb. there are plenty who ‘know which side their read is buttered on”. Don’t be naive.
I think you’re full of cr&p
As if I care what you think. Toddle along now youngster. Enjoy the weekend at the playground, don’t hurt yourself.
What is of critical importance, right now, is that Republican politicians stay out of the rhetorical war. They may, through their own emotional appeals, play right into Obama's hands.
Let me cite an example of classic, Leftwing American politics, to make the point. In 1962, President Kennedy was slipping in the polls. He started on a campaign trip in the fall to boost Democratic Congressional candidates; but was greeted by crowds with posters, attacking him for not doing anything about Cuba, while he literally invaded Mississippi. Suddenly, Kennedy abandoned the campaign, and announced that we had discovered Soviet Missile Bases on Cuba--hence the Cuban Missile Crisis.
But the funny thing was that Conservative Intelligence experts had been warning about the construction of launch pads for such from 1959! Yet Kennedy regained the political initiative immediately before the election, by suddenly appearing very tough against a foreign threat.
The Republican rhetoric on Iran, provides Obama with an opportunity to do the same thing; to take charge of the alarm--the overstated alarm--that Republican candidates have been trying to employ for their own advantage.
For more traditional reasons to cool the rhetoric on our side, see Pseudo Pragmatism--Political Folly. There are effective, technical, ways to handle future threats from Iran, North Korea, or whomever, which do not benefit from a war of words.

The BBC reports that the US Navy has rescued thirteen Iranian sailors kidnapped by pirates in the Gulf last month.
