Saying it wants to boost tourism, the Muslim Brotherhood has issued assurances that it will not seek to impose stringent restrictions on foreign tourists.
In a meeting on Sunday with members of the Egyptian Businessmen Association, Ahmed Suleiman, the head of the tourism committee at the Freedom and Justice Party, said that tourists would be free to wear, drink and eat what they want.
Were very sorry that tourism was affected after the revolution, added Suleiman.
On Sunday, Tourism Minister Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour said that revenues from tourism were US$8.8 billion in 2011, down from $12.5 billion in 2010.
Tourism accounted for more than a tenth of Egypt's gross domestic product before this year's upheaval. It employed an estimated eighth of the national workforce in a country of high unemployment.
We intend to encourage cultural tourism alongside beach tourism, he said, adding that the party also intends to bring out statues of Pharaohs that are kept in warehouses, and display them along the banks of the Nile in an open museum.
And we will also promote medical and incentive tourism, he said.
The success of Islamists in the parliamentary elections, in which they won nearly two thirds of seats, has raised concerns among liberals and businesses that an Islamist dominated parliament may seek to Islamize the countrys legal system.
Islamists have been under pressure to define their stances on a wide range of issues including sin-free tourism, where booze, bikinis and mixed bathing at beaches are disallowed.
They have sent contradictory messages, with some saying they respect peoples personal freedom, while others have argued that foreign tourists should learn to abide by the rules of an Islamic country if they choose to visit.
Go to Egypt as soon as it is safe.
In a few years, they will be imitating the Taliban and destroying all the pagan idols filling the museums.
Egypt is getting desperate. Prices of food and oil imports remain high, but they are running out of foreign reserves.
Even the Islamists have to eat, and therefore they are holding their noses and promising foreign whores and infidels they can still come to Egypt and wear their bikinis and drink their gin.
AH $$$$$$$$$$$$
The great equalizer
Sorry! It was during the cold war era and they would offer really cheap tours to get soldiers out of the barracks.:)
I highly recommend Rome. I've been five times at least and have seen something new - to me - every time.
This week in Italy features a general strike by truckers and farmers and whomever else wants to join in, protesting fuel prices. It's supposed to last until Friday. So far the impact has been minimal as gas stations still have gas available (no deliveries and soon supplies will run out. This will cascade throughout the economy to grocery stores etc). There have been roadblocks set up too, at toll stations and traffic circles, to also get the point across. I'm thinking it will grow in intensity till Friday, then they'll all go home for the weekend.
Be sure to take the full two week cruise that goes all the way to the Strait of Hormuz.
Don’t forget to pack a wheel chair for that cruise.
Reminds me of this:
At a dinner party one night, a drunk Churchill asked an attractive woman whether she would sleep with him for a million pounds. Maybe, the woman said coyly. Would you sleep with me for one pound? Churchill then asked. Of course not, what kind of woman do you think I am? the woman responded indignantly. Madam, weve already established what kind of woman you are, said Churchill, now were just negotiating the price.
I am. Our tour is sold out.
"Boost," as in "blow up."
That’s what our company told us. We were one hour from departing for the airport, when our tour was cancelled.
And, the islamic, morality police are free to beat or behead them as they sunbath or blow up their nightclubs whenever they want.
I wouldn´t visit an islamist country for anything but to help destroy it.
The latest on the strike:
Update on truck drivers’ strike 17JAN.
According to local media, this morning, protesters interrupted traffic flow
along the Palermo-Sciacca State Road.
In Gela, protesters have set up three roadblocks which are affecting traffic
flow adversely.
In Lentini, a 32-year-old pitchman from Catania slashed the face of a
protester who tried to stop his truck from making deliveries in Carlentini.
Meanwhile, traffic chaos continues as Sicilian truck drivers, farmers and
fishermen go on with their strike action all across Sicily’s main highways,
roads and ports.
Okay, turn the bus around - I’m going home.
