I was lucky enough to tour Italy (including Pompeii) when I was stationed over in Germany many years ago. Touring the ancient Egyptian sites was always my dream vacation when I had more “time” to enjoy it. Guess I waited too long.

Go to Egypt as soon as it is safe.
In a few years, they will be imitating the Taliban and destroying all the pagan idols filling the museums.

I was in the service, but all I got to "tour" was the DMZ :)
My Rome trip is on hold until the European "takers of society" calm down ... and the Euro too for that matter.

Egypt is getting desperate. Prices of food and oil imports remain high, but they are running out of foreign reserves.
Even the Islamists have to eat, and therefore they are holding their noses and promising foreign whores and infidels they can still come to Egypt and wear their bikinis and drink their gin.

You mean when Islam is banned? That's not going to happen in my life time.

Sorry! It was during the cold war era and they would offer really cheap tours to get soldiers out of the barracks.:)

The only places I wanted to see when I retired were Rome (including Pompeii ruins)...I highly recommend Rome. I've been five times at least and have seen something new - to me - every time.

My Rome trip is on hold until the European "takers of society" calm down ... and the Euro too for that matter. This week in Italy features a general strike by truckers and farmers and whomever else wants to join in, protesting fuel prices. It's supposed to last until Friday. So far the impact has been minimal as gas stations still have gas available (no deliveries and soon supplies will run out. This will cascade throughout the economy to grocery stores etc). There have been roadblocks set up too, at toll stations and traffic circles, to also get the point across. I'm thinking it will grow in intensity till Friday, then they'll all go home for the weekend.

Maybe I could book a Carnival cruise for a vacation to Egypt. What could possibly go wrong? Be sure to take the full two week cruise that goes all the way to the Strait of Hormuz.

So Sharia law can be put aside for filthy lucre... Reminds me of this:
At a dinner party one night, a drunk Churchill asked an attractive woman whether she would sleep with him for a million pounds. Maybe, the woman said coyly. Would you sleep with me for one pound? Churchill then asked. Of course not, what kind of woman do you think I am? the woman responded indignantly. Madam, weve already established what kind of woman you are, said Churchill, now were just negotiating the price.

I'm sure the communists will be well represented, they loooove that sort of thing - it's like a sport.
Saw this other news not long ago -"Italy government hangs by thread as coalition crumbles."
Vacation in Italy ... ah, maybe next year.

That’s what our company told us. We were one hour from departing for the airport, when our tour was cancelled.
To: SJackson
....said that tourists would be free to wear, drink and eat what they want. .... And, the islamic, morality police are free to beat or behead them as they sunbath or blow up their nightclubs whenever they want.

The latest on the strike:
Update on truck drivers’ strike 17JAN.
According to local media, this morning, protesters interrupted traffic flow
along the Palermo-Sciacca State Road.
In Gela, protesters have set up three roadblocks which are affecting traffic
flow adversely.
In Lentini, a 32-year-old pitchman from Catania slashed the face of a
protester who tried to stop his truck from making deliveries in Carlentini.
Meanwhile, traffic chaos continues as Sicilian truck drivers, farmers and
fishermen go on with their strike action all across Sicily’s main highways,
roads and ports.
