Schmidt: GOP Establishment Will Have A Meltdown If Newt Wins Florida
RealClearPolitics ^

Posted on 01/21/2012 8:01:49 PM PST by VinL

Schmidt: "Not only are we not moving toward a coalescing of support with the establishment of Newt Gingrich, we're probably moving toward a declaration of war on Newt Gingrich by the Republican establishment. And if Newt Gingrich is able to win the Florida primary, you will see a panic and a meltdown of the Republican establishment that is beyond my ability to articulate in the English language. People will go crazy,"

And you will have this five week period until the Super Tuesday states that will be just as unpredictable, tumultuous as any period in modern American politics. It will be a remarkable thing to watch, should that happen in Florida."

Maddow: "Is there a component of that which is building a firewall around Mitt Romney, protecting him? We saw the establishment try to do that and Romney helping, saying “You can’t talk any smack about Bain. Bain is what I want to run on, it has to be positive, don’t undercut that at all.” Which to me, was like a flashing red neon arrow, “here’s my glass jaw, please don’t hit it.” Is there a way to protect Mitt Romney other than, I think, this wrong approach, Ithey’ve taken with Bain."

Schmidt: "I think everybody in the establishment Republican circles in Washington D.C. is fixated on the numbers we talked about earlier. Newt Gingrich has a 100% name ID, has a 60% national unfavorable number and it’s a number so high that with the 100% name ID it’s impossible to come back from. You’re not electable in a general election, in a 2012 presidential election if your unfavorable numbers are that high. Particularly against a president, that while vulnerable...

You need not wait, my dear. One need only surf on over to National Review Online and you can see them having quite a temper tantrum right now. Their reaction is nothing more than a hyper-verbose version of a three year old who has been told “No.”

I agree with those who see Gingrich as having large flaws. However, I grew sick and tired of the way Romney was being shoved down our throats so far back that I’m most thoroughly enjoying the hissy-fit the GOP elites are throwing tonight.

Now, if Gingrich wins Florida? Then I’m going to pop some popping corn, grab a six-pack, sit back and watch the howling, sackcloth and ashes routine I’m quite sure we’ll be seeing.

Strangely this is beginning to mirror the path Reagan went down.

Back then the fact that he had been divorced and remarried, that he was an actor, and he was supposedly too old.

Newt's variables are slightly different, but, to me, it's starting to look as familiar as Reagan's path to the Presidency.

Newt has also done what Reagan was able to accomplish and that is begin a dialogue directly with the American people through his debate comments.

I think it was the New Hampshire debate when Reagan called Carter out with the statement "there you go again" in rebuttal to Carter making some illogical claims. From that point forward the average American became connected to Reagan and all that he said.

In my opinion Newt has done that very same thing in his own way. I like what is starting to unfold. May it continue.

The only thing he said to her which was true is that the establishment already are flippin' out about the SC loss. Yes, they will have a Bigger meltdown if Newt wins Florida.

Newts unfavorables were at 60% in SC-he got them down to 20% now-so this can change-

Don't you find it strange for a GOP operative to be on a left wing show telling the extreme left all of this stuff—he is trying to send a message to the voter in Florida to believe that Newt's unfavorable are so high; to go with Romney. Some will fall for it. let's hope many will not. It looks like even with her remarks, the left does not want to run against Newt. Most news channels ( the elites) are calling Newt a crazy man and could never win. They have no clue about the American people.

If the GOP screws this up, the GOP will be a footnote in some un-read history book within 20 years.

My guess is Jeb is going to come out and back Romney just a couple of days before the primary. That was the trick the Republican establishment used to get McCain in.

Crist came out, all the stations carried it, and the “Big Mo” carried McCain to primary victory and November slaughter. The Repubs are going to declare war against small government TEA party types but they will never, never admit it.

The REAL anti establishment candidates have all been winnowed out. Bachmann, Cain, and the last one, Paul.

This is the one area where the MSM works with the republicans. They are terrified of having a real reformer in. Sarah sent them ballistic. The MSM likes Obama, but they won’t die as long as a big spender is in who won’t really change DC.

I think Newt, while a DC insider, is not someone they trust to keep their gravy train going. He’s not what they want.

—>Newt is every bit as much of a Republican “Establishment” candidate as Romney.

I disagree-he's not like they are-They said tonight on most of the news shows that the GOP is going to try to destroy Newt. I think he will go clean house-they don't want any changes. Hume on Fox even said the GOP will try to destroy Newt now. They want weak Romney who they can control as a puppet. Newt is unconditional.

One thing I’ve noticed that the Establishment misses is that the more Republicans listen to Newt, the more favorably they view him. When the candidates first started to declare, I couldn’t possibly imagine that I’d be favoring Newt Gingrich (I was THRILLED when Perry got in and thought he would be the guy to block Mittens). Then, watching the debates, I landed solidly in the Gingrich camp.

If you look at the polling for SC, those who watched the debates favor Gingrich by an absolutely massive margin, and those who didn’t actually broke for Romney. Newt wins debates so powerfully that people’s perception of him steadily improves.

When independents hear Gingrich debate, and obliterate Obama in the debates, Newt’s favorables will rise. Approval isn’t a static value. This is the same line of bull they used last time to insist that McCain was the only candidate who could beat...well, I think they actually thought Hillary was going to be the opponent at that time. But it’s the same thing.

The media myth of how brilliant Obama is dies the second he debates Newt. Will slippery Mitt be able to shatter that illusion of Obama’s false genius? I just don’t think so.

In my heart of hearts, I think Newt can and will beat Obama, and will be a stronger candidate than Mittens against Obozo.

Hume on Fox even said the GOP will try to destroy Newt now. They want weak Romney who they can control as a puppet. Newt is unconditional.

Hume said the GOP would try to destroy Newt because his negatives are so high according to the polls that many Republicans are afraid of running with Newt for fear they will lose the House and Senate.

Our family sure did, Vin.

Though, I really got angry when the media played down Newt's win to say he won only because of the debates and has no message to last. Rove was very insulting/most of them were Imo.

Newt Gingrich has a 100% name ID, has a 60% national unfavorable number and it’s a number so high that with the 100% name ID it’s impossible to come back from.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz... Newt is going to pulverize The Fraud. I can't wait.

So, let's see. Santorum won IA (finishing way ahead of Newt there), and then also beat Newt in NH. Right after NH, were you asking Newt to "drop out" and "take one for the team"? And since he didn't, I guess we can just assume he's in it for himself and not the "principles"? ;)

Just one correction: Santorum did not beat Gingrich in NH--those numbers were reversed. Otherwise, carry on. ;^)

That’s the very same thing they said about SC last week. With a positive message, he will be just fine. They lose; it’s their own faults for not standing up to the Obama regime.

You’re right,66-— People know the country is heading on the wrong path— and they’re looking for someone to lead.

They may not like Newt’s personality- but they’ll vote for his competence.

Gingrich Beats Media in South Carolina, 54 to 14
http://cnsnews.com/news/article/gingrich-beats-media-south-carolina-54-14

Excerpt:

The poll, conducted by Raleigh, N.C.-based Public Policy Polling (PPP), interviewed 1,540 likely South Carolina Republican primary voters from Jan. 18 to Jan. 20. It showed that 54 percent of those voters said they had a favorable opinion of Gingrich while 37 percent said they had an unfavorable opinion of him.

At the same time, only 14 percent said they had a favorable opinion of the media, while 77 percent said they had an unfavorable opinion of the media.

**Boehner will be on Fox News Sunday in the am .. I’ll be watching for the Beltway cautious, ‘code’ speak in his reaction.

You raise the Tea Party, that’s key. The Establishment had deflated it- look at Haley and Demint. But, with Juan Williams, Newt rekindled the fire. Also Sarah and Perry coming on board. Be interesting, but Newt may well re-forge that 2010 anti-establishment excitement- I think that’s what he is trying to do, anyway.

Like your Board name.
