MIAMI Former House speaker Newt Gingrich on Wednesday mocked as an Obama-level fantasy Mitt Romneys plan to deal with illegal immigration by encouraging self-deportation.
Gingrich made the comment as he began a day of outreach to Floridas Hispanic voters with an extensive interview on Spanish-language television and a speech at Florida International University in which he called for a more a forceful U.S. role in ending communist rule in Cuba, as well as an overhaul of U.S. economic policies toward all of Latin America.
In an interview with the Univision network, Gingrich said it was unrealistic for millions of illegal immigrants in the United States to voluntarily leave the country, as Romney, his chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination, suggested in a debate Monday ahead of Floridas Jan. 31 primary. Gingrich, who upset the GOP race by decisively winning Saturdays South Carolina primary, also used a question about the immigration issue to get in a few digs at the former Massachusetts governor over his wealth and tax returns.
You have to live in a world of Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island accounts and automatic $20 million income for no work to have some fantasy this far from reality, Gingrich told Univision interviewer Jorge Ramos. For Romney to believe that somebodys grandmother is going to be so cut off that she is going to self-deport, I mean this is an Obama-level fantasy.

#1, he’s talking to Univision.
#2, it takes a little over one minute before he invokes the name of Reagan.
LOL.
It helped Newt in the sense that he was talking to Univision, the Spanish language TV giant....
At worst, he made an incomplete comment (below) - I agree there's more to incentivizing self-deportation than cutting off job access. The point is that we don't have to physically apprehend every illegal.
'Well, the answer is self-deportation, he responded. He said this would happen when people decide that they could do better by going home because they cant find work here because they dont have legal documentation to allow them to work here.'
Looks like we agree and yes, Mitt should have been more explicit on his comment. The audience responded with stiffled laughter.
Govt documentation has to be “fraud” proof.
Berries ~ there are some nice machines that turn them instantly to pulp ~ which is just as saleable at the commercial use level.
Pretty shameless pandering, and it is pretty surprising to see the idea of self-deportation being made into joke on FR where it has been praised so often in the past.
And, actually, that praise been going on even longer than I recalled. The first Oklahoma law was in 2007:
Still, many in Oklahoma say Latinos have been leaving by the thousands since the law was passed in May.
"We are losing a lot of business, a lot of business," said Antonio Perez, who owns Mexican grocery stores. "I would say between the four stores we have lost about $300,000 a month in sales."
Oklahoma targets illegal immigrants with tough new law
That Oklahoma law from late 2007 got lots of discussion and praise, but now...
It must be the political season.
True and just because someone has made money doesn’t make them conservative.
Romney claims those who hire illegals will be in trouble if they hire illegals.
“Gingrich said it was unrealistic for millions of illegal immigrants in the United States to voluntarily leave the country”
I DON’T CARE IF IT’S UNREALISTIC. GET IT DONE.
Self-deportation is underway as we speak, thanks to the leadership of Arizona with Alabama, Georgia and other states following with strong measures.
_____________________________________________
OK
so where do they all go when they leave “Arizona and Alabama” ???
Ya notice I didnt repeat “Georgia”{ cause I know the answer to that one...
From Georgia they came north into Tennessee pouring in in time to flood our schools and displace 2 of my grandchildren who already had assigned seats in Kindergarten..
and were tossed off their seats and the list just a day or 2 before school started
and their stunned parents called and told that they would have to wait at home for at least SIX WEEKS into the school year..
Until Nana called the school system and reminded them that if my grandchildren were just staying home their parents would be IN JAIL
and forthwith accept them both or I WOULD SUE
My grandchildren were quickly put back even if it did now cause an overcrowding of that classroom...
but there were other AMERICAN children who had to wait because their families just rolled over for such junk..
Rant off
Nevertheless thats not “self-deportation” when the illegal aliens just move on to another hapless state...
Is that what your Willie Mitty meant ???
HAHA they’ll just move on to another state in the US ???
What a liar...
what a fool...
What a deceiver...
LE thats not what self-deportation is all about...
Its about the illegal aliens leaving the US
and going home to their own country...
Thanks for the clarification RomneyBot...
Willie Mitty and his subterfuge again...
Newt's proposals for securing the border by a date certain, widespread eVerify, ending the war on AZ and other states will encourage "self-deportation" for a number who are here for work but it won't address those retired types here for 25 years with grandkids and deep community ties Newt talks about dealing with after everything else has been done.
Newt has a detailed, multi-stage, end-to-end plan; Romney's just pivoting and pulling in talking-points he thinks can inure himself to elements of the GOP base.
Do you have anything to support that assertion?
No, it isn't, and yes, we have. And so has Newt. In the recent past, Newt has not only advocated the use of E-verify, he has proposed outsourcing it to folks who are actually good at verification:
Q: Should we make all businesses use E-Verify, a government database, to check whether or not new hires are illegal? Or would that turn small businessmen into immigration agents?GINGRICH: Well, let me say, first of all, I think we would be better off to outsource E-Verify to American Express, MasterCard or Visa, because they actually know how to run a program like that without massive fraud. Second, the program should be as easy as swiping your credit card when you buy gasoline. And so I would ask of employers, what is it you would object to in helping the US in dealing with the problem involving illegal immigration?
Q: Would you support each state enforcing the immigration laws since the federal government is not?
GINGRICH: I strongly favor 100% control of the border, and I strongly favor English as the official language of government. I favor modernizing the legal visa system. We have a terribly antiquated legal system while our border is too open for people who are illegal.

Now, of course, the whole purpose of E-verify is to cause self-deportation. After all, if they can't work and can't collect welfare, then the only illegals able to stay would be the independently wealthy. And there are too few of those to matter.
Romney said it himself during the debate Monday night. That’s why he’s getting ridiculed about it, because apparently he believes self-deportation alone will resolve illegal immigration issues. This is fantastical Obama-style magical thinking.
Mexico is Mad That Mexicans are Returning to Mexico!!!
Nine state legislators from the Mexican State of Sonora traveled to Tucson In January to complain about Arizonas new employer crackdown on illegals from Mexico. It seems that many of the Mexican illegals are returning to Mexico and thats not acceptable.
Nine state legislators from the Mexican State of Sonora traveled to Tucson in January 2008 to complain about Arizonas new employer crackdown on illegals from Mexico . It seems that many Mexican illegals are returning to their hometowns and the officials in the Sonora state government are angry about it.
The delegation of Mexican legislators from Sonora were in Tucson in January 2008 to complain that Arizonas new Employer Sanctions Law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state.
At a news conference, the legislators said that Sonora, Arizonas southern neighbor, made up of mostly small towns, cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools that it will face as Mexican workers return to their hometowns from the USA without jobs or US money.
In other words they do not want the responsibility for these people that they have expected the American taxpayer to take up. These are their own citizens and they are mad at them for coming home? One can only guess at how furious Mexican politicians are now that Arizona has passed their law requiring the enforcement of immigration laws in Arizona. But wait, What about Mexicos immigration laws? Are they so much more lenient then ours?
Look at these current laws in Mexico Regarding immigration!
1. There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools.
2. All ballots will be in this nations language..
3. All government business will be conducted in our language.
4. Non-residents will NOT have the right to vote no matter how long they are here.
5. Non-citizens will NEVER be able to hold political office
6. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No government assistance programs will be provided for them
7. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount at least equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.
8. If foreigners come here and buy land options will be restricted. Certain parcels including waterfront property are reserved for citizens naturally born into this country.
9. Foreigners may have no protests; no demonstrations, no waving of a foreign flag, no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our president or his policies. These will lead to deportation.
10. If you do come to this country illegally, you will be actively hunted and when caught, sent to jail until your deportation can be arranged. Any and all assets will be taken from you.
I say, Lets implement these same laws in our Country.I mean, after all, if it is good enough for Mexico to have these laws .
I guess Mexico wants us to just do as they say not as they do!
That's why E-verify has to be enforced at the federal level. No work, no welfare. Let them go back to Jalisco, or wherever they came from!
25 years ago we had a one time amnesty. I guess these people couldn't take advantage of it (you had to be here for five years to qualify) or maybe they came right after to take advantage of a second amnesty. When you reward something, you get more of it.
When you read Newt's immigration plan, there is no mention of any time limit or whether they are grandparents or have grandkids. Strong community ties says nothing and having local communities like the sanctuary cities of LA and SF decide who can stay doesn't pass the laught test.
Why do we have to legalize the status of these lawbreakers? Why the sense of urgency and need? Let's have attrition thru enforcement and make this country so inhosptiable to illegal aliens that they will leave or live permanently in the shadows--nevermind the hundreds of thousands who took to the streets to support the McCain-Kennedy amnesty in 2007.
We have over three million intending immigrants overseas waiting to enter this country legally. Depending on their immigration category, some have been waiting for years. They have completed the paperwork, paid the fees, had the background investigations, and the physicals. What kind of message does it send to them or anyone else contemplating emigrating to the US legally when they see the lawbreakers being given the object of their crime, i.e., to stay and work here. When you reward illegal behavior, you get more of it.
I wonder how Newt and other amnesty supporters can say they are conservatives who support the Rule of Law. The lawbreakers not only entered this country illegally, they have committed may other crimes such as ID theft, working illegally, tax evasion, etc. Do we really want people who flaunt our laws and national sovereignty as permanent residents of this country.
Agreed. What's Newt's? Oh, that's right. Amnesty.
Okay, before I give you the full exchange from the debate transcript, I'll just mention that "fantasy" is one of Newt's favorite claims to make about the ideas of others. It's a form of belittlement. Okay, here is the exchange between Adam Smith and Mitt Romney:

Let's stay on immigration for a second.
Governor Romney, there is one thing I'm confused about. You say you don't want to go and round up people and deport them, but you also say that they would have to go back to their home countries and then apply for citizenship. So, if you don't deport them, how do you send them home?
Mitt Romney
Well, the answer is self-deportation, which is people decide they can do better by going home because they can't find work here because they don't have legal documentation to allow them to work here. And so we're not going to round people up.
The way that we have in this society is to say, look, people who have come here legally would, under my plan, be given a transition period and the opportunity during that transition period to work here, but when that transition period was over, they would no longer have the documentation to allow them to work in this country. At that point, they can decide whether to remain or whether to return home and to apply for legal residency in the United States, get in line with everybody else. And I know people think but that's not fair to those that have come here illegally.
Moderator
Isn't that what we have now? If somebody doesn't feel they have the opportunity in America, they can go back any time they want to.
Mitt Romney
Yes, we'd have a card that indicates who's here illegally. And if people are not able to have a card, and have through an E-Verify system determine that they are here illegally, then they're going to find they can't get work here. And if people don't get work here, they're going to self-deport to a place where they can get work.
Ultimately, with this transition period in place, we would then allow people to get in line at home and to come back to this country after they have reached the front of the line. But I just don't think it's fair to the people who have loved ones waiting in line legally to come to America and say, guess what? We're going to encourage a wave of illegal immigration by giving amnesty of some kind to those who have come here illegally.
Of course, why would Newt or his supporters want to discuss the full context of Romney's comments....
