Sarah Palin: Ron Paul is the "Only One" Willing to Rein in Spending
Townhall ^ | 1/27/12 | Daniel Doherty

Appearing on Fox News this morning, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin surprised her acolytes by singing the praises of the most libertarian-leaning GOP presidential candidate…Ron Paul.

I still sense his desire to be more of an isolated-type country and not be as aware and active on the international scene when it comes to protecting our allies like Israel and doing all that we can.

That is my hesitancy there still with Ron Paul's candidacy. However, on the domestic front, he is the only one who has been so adamantly passionate about doing something about the suffocating debt, about doing something about reining in government growth and actually slashing budgets - $1 trillion a year, he's been specific about until we get our hands around this - I respect that.

I appreciate it. His austerity measures that he wants to see Congress adopt in order to rein in government and let the private sector actually grow and thrive and hire more people.

Fresh off his strongest debate performance to date, Sarah Palin’s kind words could not have come at a better time. The Texas Congressman, who has abandoned all hopes of winning Tuesday’s presidential primary in Florida, is seeking delegates elsewhere by campaigning in Maine for the next two days. Paul, of course, is a long shot to win the Republican nomination, but a surprising victory in the Pine Tree State on February 4th could revive his faltering candidacy.

On the other hand, there is at least some reason to believe that Sarah Palin’s remarks may strike a chord with conservatives. After all, the former governor’s assertion that Ron Paul is the only Republican contender serious about cutting the size and scope of government is in some respects true. Indeed, his proposals to cut $1 trillion from the national debt and eliminate five federal departments are bold ideas that Tea Partiers and fiscal conservatives everywhere can embrace. While his isolationism is a deal breaker for some, reining in government spending has been a staple of his campaign since announcing his candidacy last summer.

In any event, if Ron Paul hopes to ride his newfound momentum to victory in 2012, he faces an uphill battle. Nevertheless, I suppose a little love from Sarah Palin can’t hurt.

I agree with this. I have long said that, although Ron Paul is out beyond the orbit of Pluto on most issues, he is dead-center on-target about fiscal and Treasury matters.

Newt should pick up on this, and run hard with it.

I agree with her 100%. Grave reservations about his foreign policy, we all know the score there. But he is really the ONLY one who has been talking about the kind of deep, massive cuts that need to be made. No one else is even close to in his league there.

which is why Palin would’ve been the perfect candidate. She’s with Paul on the national issues but slightly different on the foreign affairs. None of the other gop candidates are serious with the spending and debt

Newt has been making overtures to Paul, too. Tea Party may need his delegates down the road. For instance, the GOP here in VA, under the guidance of Gov McDonnell has managed to lock everyone but Romney and Paul out of the primary. So the "stop Romney" forces here will have to vote for Ron Paul as no “write-ins” are allowed. It's amazing what the GOP elites are trying to do in this primary season. I hate Paul's foreign policy as well as some other issues; however, I will vote for him in the primary just to try to stop Romney from getting those delegates.

Secretary of the Treasury, Ron Paul.

This has been thrown out there a few times already as a possibility in Gringrich’s cabinet. I think it sounds good: what does anyone else think?

He has a bat sh*t crazy factor of about 1 trillion on the Guano scale. He will lose and needs to withdraw now.

Newt overtures can’t be trusted. All he talked about is that he will look into setting up a gold standard which is as good as not doing anything. This is what politicians do - pretend they’re doing something

Agree. I too suggested a while back Ron Paul for Secretary of Treasury or Fed Chairman.

I hate Paul's foreign policy..

I understand a lot of folks have oppposition to this,as does apparently Sarah Palin. However, Mark Steyn came out with a recent piece supporting it:

Mark Steyn: Ron Paul beckons GOP to Fortress America (FR link).

Note that this is not an endorsement.

I suspect it’s more of an admission that it’s a sad thing that no one but Ron Paul is willing to talk about cutting expenses at the levels that are needed.

Rick Perry talked about cutting three departments of government, but unfortunately couldn’t remember which ones they were. He dropped the ball at least twice on it. We need to get serious about this.

I agree with her comments. They are not aimed at endorsing Paul, but more likely to remind the other candidates that the debt is really what they should be talking about.

The sweet lady from Alaska just dropped several notches on my confidence scale. I thought every Conservative knew what a fraud Ron Paul is when it comes to earmarks and government spending.

His little trick is to latch onto a bill that is a lead pipe cinch to PASS both houses; load that bill up with earmarks for HIS district, and then VOTE AGAINST IT. Voila! Plausible deniability! He can always claim he voted AGAINST that big spending bill.

I've listened to Gingrich's last two debates and the speech he just gave in Palm Beach FL. I've heard him talk about cutting taxes and regulations and repealing ObamaCare and Dood-Frank, and Sorbates-Oxley and even getting the Tenth Amendment in motion.

But I haven't heard him say a word about CUTTING GOVERNMENT SPENDING. Obama's multi-trillion-dalloar drunken Marxist-Keynesian poli-psycho spending binge has taken the U.S. to the brink. Gingrich, PLEASE EMPHASIZE LESS GOVERNMENT.
