Gingrich: 'I Pledge to You My Life, My Fortune, My Sacred Honor'

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich invoked the spirit of the Founding Fathers by paraphrasing the Declaration of Independence in his speech to supporters following his second-place finish in the Florida Republican presidential primary.

Gingrich, a trained historian and author, began his 15-minute speech by noting President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the first national military cemetery when he spoke of “government of the people, by the people, for the people."

“And we’re going to have people power to defeat money power in the next six months,” he said in a reference to Florida victor Mitt Romney, whom he referred to as the “Massachusetts moderate.”

Closing out his remarks, Gingrich stressed his commitment to unleashing the spirit of the American people and called on supporters to reach out to friends across the country to tell them they have a chance to nominate a conservative.

"I promise you that, if I become your president, I pledge to you my life, my fortune, my sacred honor," he concluded. ...

Last night on twitter someone posted an opinion piece about how the GOP establishment is telling conservatives, the Tea Party and the Ron Paul fans to sit down and shut up, they have decided Mitt will be our nominee.

I skimmed the article off my phone and it was excellent. I wasn't home to bookmark it. I can't find the tweet now.

Does anyone remember reading such an article and know the title, or have a link? Thanks in advance.

Other issue, there is a push on by Santorum fans on Twitter and I hear Rick has negative ads running against Newt in NV. Newt is in a danged if he does, danged if he doesn't if he goes after Rick. Rick has not been vetted and he really isn't the perfect candidate supporters think he is. Freepers need to vet him on blogs and on Twitter. It is becoming clearer, Rick is acting as spoiler for Mitt.

Thanks FReepers.

I think Newty was at his best in South Carolina. His rhetoric embodied the American motto Annuit Coeptus. He may wanna stick with that motif; there is a vast gulf between that and 0bama's vision for America's future.

To what you said, I’d add that if Romney is a prime example of a Mormon, then the Mormon impression is going to plummet.

I mean seriously, he is coming off as a vile and evil individual with his lying about Gingrich and then following up with his UNBELIEVABLE comments re: Newt being a negative campaigner and Newt going beyond the pale.

There is still a path to the GOP nomination for Gingrich, but if that bustud Romney wins, I hope Gingrich talks with Palin, JC Watts, Reagan, and others about forming the next 2nd Party....the Tea Party.

The GOP deserves nothing but the Teaparties disdain and exit. They die without the base.

It’s a great line, but it was written and subscribed to (in the Declaration) by men who would indeed have lost their fortunes and lives if they had not won. Newt doesn’t face that prospect if he loses — he would remain rich and alive — so I was a bit uncomfortable with the invocation of that particular bit of our Framers’ rhetoric

I totally agree. I liked Newt's speech last night, up until that line. The authors of the Declaration of Independence would have most likely been hung if they had "lost" vs the king of England.

Christians who are Catholics also understand the power of forgiveness, in the sacrement of reconcilation.

We dither about personal baggage all the time, even more so when it’s a democrat. Ask practically anyone here how important the morals are of the person we want to represent us.

As I’ve said so manytimes, the Establishment owns both parties. Unfortunately, if Romney gets in and the LDS “Church” takes over the government, we re-enter
the dark ages.
