Ohio Senate Considers Limiting Smoking in Cars

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A bill in the Ohio Senate would ban smoking in cars if children under 6 are on board.

The measure's sponsor says the idea is to safeguard youngsters from secondhand smoke. Democratic Sen. Charleta Tavares of Columbus testified Wednesday at a hearing on her bill and said smoke inside cars is especially dangerous because the space makes the smoke much more concentrated.

Multiple news outlets report that Senate Highways and Transportation Committee Chairman Tom Patton questioned how law enforcers would be able to spot that a child is younger than 6, in order to enforce the law. Another Republican, Sen. Frank LaRose, warned that critics are likely to say the proposal infringes on personal freedom.

Tavares says several other states have similar car smoking bans.

” If you’re in your car the ashtray is the ONLY option, not just “an option.”

What ashtray?

Hey, I think you forgot your own tag line!

I'd have to agree with you on that.

Know how they have those fake babies they give to high school girls to give them a taste of what it's like to have a real one?

I wish there was a fake cigarette that could be given to non-smokers (I wouldn't wish nicotine addiction on anyone) so they could see how their solutions work in today's world - especially in an office environment.

It just doesn't seem to sink in - there are no ashtrays anymore, there are no outdoor trash cans, you can't bring a formerly lit cigarette into an office building even to toss it in the trash without a visit to HR to "get your mind right".

Sadly, no one in any position of authority seems to have a problem with smokers tossing their butts on the ground in comparison to all the more sensible options that have, one way or another, been taken off the table.

“are you kidding me, we don’t have the time or inclination to pay attention to what everyone is doing in their car, our time is spent on crimes”

Whoever said that will be called in tomorrow and reminded that their time is supposed to be spent on property confiscation, incarceration and revenue enhancement.

In fact, every smoker I see while driving always disposes of their cigarette out the window.

That would probably change if there were even one place one could smoke except in their car.

Alas!

And it’s just being a slob to toss anything on the ground rather than the trash can.

How long has it been since you've seen a public ashtray? Been a long, long time for me.

Find me a car or a building or a street with an ashtray and I will buy you a steak, or a tofuburger, whichever is your preference.

I've never seen a Big Mac wrapper or coffee cup burn thousands of acres of land, destroying property and lives along the way.

I have. Those things are known as "accelerants" or"fuel".

Good grief -- personal responsibility no longer exists in this country.

You are correct. All behavior is mandated by the government, which is fine with you, as long as you agree with the mandate. What happens when you don't agree with the mandate?

I have 600 foot on the road. I cut grass with my garden tractor...I have had to pick up styrofoam, broken glass, beer/pop cans and one time a pair of ladies underwear and a used condom in my driveway...never had to get off my tractor to pick up a cigarette butt. You seem to get offended very easy. I have seen birds picking away at a filter on a cigarette butt for their nests....The crap that people throw out their window, ciggy’s is low on the list and cannot even see them in the grass....No flame war, just the facts....

If reason ruled, none of us would be engaged in this discussion. Sadly, hysteria prevails.

I'm considering running for public office on the platform of making denigration of tobacco smokers a hate crime, and the consumption of tofu a real crime.

Good for you, they are all over where I live.

I don’t get offended easy, I just know the facts.

What they get away with doing to one group they hate, they will “progress” to do to another group they hate. Sooner or later, they will nab everyone in their net.

Things global elitists currently hate:

Meat eaters
Rural people
fatties
soda drinkers
cigar smokers, pipe smokers
sugar eaters
raw milk drinkers
organic farmers
vitamin users
non-state people who feed and help the homeless
Christians
Jews
Whites
cash users
gold and silver owners

It really is scary how gubmint social engineering through taxpayer funded PSAs can change and mold peoples opinions.

When I used to smoke, I would never smoke in my car with my kids. I didn’t need a law. I’ll say it again...

If you put a gun to my head and forced me to sign one of 2 stupid nanny state laws:

Ban smoking in cars with children or
Ban smoking in bars with fat drunk adults

I would choose the former. But this is all really about Big Pharma funded front groups like ACS, ALA, CTFK doing their benefactors bidding. Coercing people to quit smoking and buy nicotine replacement gums, patches for $50.

They don’t care about the chilruns. It’s about the money.

What would really be cool is if Ohio decided to limit their Senate instead.
