In July 1996, Mitt Romney helped locate the missing teenage daughter of a partner at Bain Capital.

"In July 1996, the 14-year-old daughter of Robert Gay, a partner at Bain Capital, had disappeared," the story reads. "She had attended a rave party in New York City and gotten high on ecstasy. Three days later, her distraught father had no idea where she was. Romney took immediate action. He closed down the entire firm and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York to help find Gay’s daughter. Romney set up a command center at the LaGuardia Marriott and hired a private detective firm to assist with the search. He established a toll-free number for tips, coordinating the effort with the NYPD, and went through his Rolodex and called everyone Bain did business with in New York and asked them to help find his friend’s missing daughter. Romney’s accountants at Price Waterhouse Cooper put up posters on street poles, while cashiers at a pharmacy owned by Bain put fliers in the bag of every shopper. Romney and the other Bain employees scoured every part of New York and talked with everyone they could – prostitutes, drug addicts – anyone.

"That day, their hunt made the evening news, which featured photos of the girl and the Bain employees searching for her. As a result, a teenage boy phoned in, asked if there was a reward, and then hung up abruptly. The NYPD traced the call to a home in New Jersey, where they found the girl in the basement, shivering and experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a massive ecstasy dose. Doctors later said the girl might not have survived another day. Romney’s former partner credits Mitt Romney with saving his daughter’s life, saying, ‘It was the most amazing thing, and I’ll never forget this to the day I die.’

Why does it matter why he did it? Do the people who shop at Goodwill care that someone donated clothes for a tax write off, or do they care that they have clothes?

Mitt Romney’s probably a pretty decent guy. Doesn’t mean he’s suitable for the office of the President.

I am familiar with corporate law.

Not familiar enough, apparently. Not an attorney, I'll assume. Normally, that's a compliment, but here it means . . . you don't understand corporate law.

[W]hat Romney did is no more of an imposition on his crew, and way more interesting/useful than what goes on every day.

First, we have no idea what Romney did. This email is obvious a bunch of bunk. It's more useful, but no more of an imposition than leadership training and seminars. Riiiiiight.

As for the Mormon angle- what of it?

Ummm. You're the one who said "And what does it have to do with anything that the girl was related to a partner?" And now you're saying:

Its his social circle, they are his people. You have your people, I have my people. If one of them has a problem it is more directly my problem than the troubles of some stranger.

Excuse me, but I was pointing out that he wasn't just magically helping out some girl in trouble. He was taking care of his own. Doubly his own. Bain and LDS General Authority. I think you're agreeing with me but couching it in terms of disagreeing with me because you can't bring yourself to admit I was right.

So have a good night.

Glad he helped save the rich girl. A class act.

From 2002 to 2006, when Romney was Governor, over 80,000 Massachusetts babies were butchered to death by abortionists. Romney did nothing whatsoever to try to save their lives.

Why does it matter why he did it?

Motive? Doing something good is always doing something good on some level.

However, if Mitt had read about some poor black Baptist girl who was missing and the police weren't doing anything, and he threw the resources of Bain and his own personal resources into finding her? That's one thing.

If a daughter of one of his wealthy partners is missing, and the rest of the wealthy partners in the firm assist in finding her, using their employees to assist with the search? That's still nice, but it's a completely different story.

Not quite like the Crimson Tide Football Boosters club helping the family of some spelling bee champion in Wisconsin rebuild a storm-damaged house, versus the Crimson Tide Football Boosters club helping the family of the top high school football recruit in Memphis rebuild a storm-damaged house. But along the same lines. One impresses me more than the other. But both are nice.

I’ve never heard of anyone dying from ecstasy withdrawals.

Does this happen?

But he is such a decent guy! I read it on this very thread!!!

I have to agree. It’s a good story. It appears to actually be true.

It’s OK to give a little credit where credit is due. Would Obama have reacted that way, or been as effective? Of course not.

My question: What the heck was a 14 year old doing at a Rave party in the first place???

I mean, it’s nice that Romney looked for her and all, but no 14 year old should be in that situation in the first place.

there is a silver lining to this abortion issue...and that is that most of those 80,000 abortions were likely future lefty voters

...and since when do abortions matter more to your everyday life than the economy and you and your family having decent jobs?

I am not whining. I am stating a fact, there is not a dimes worth of difference between BHO and Romney.
I will not vote for Romney.
What is really annoying are people who trumpet that liberal called Romney on FR.
BHO campaign will be “why vote for Romney, you already have me”.

“...and since when do abortions matter more to your everyday life than the economy and you and your family having decent jobs?”

You do know this isn’t the Democratic Underground??

I suggest you review the top of our page. It says “Welcome to Free Republic, America’s exclusive site for God, Family, Country, Life & Liberty conservatives!”

As such, Free Republic is Pro-Life.

Now, on to your larger problem...

There is no liberty without a right to life. I suggest you read the Declaration of Independence. There is a reason “Life” comes before “Liberty” and the “Pursuit of Happiness”.

Finally, I’m not interested in a job. If you think RINOmney is going to do anything to change the terrible problems we face, you don’t know his history.

Actually, no. It is sheeple (apparently you included) who like a regular serving of Ford, Bush, Dole and McCain. Eat heartily and you’ll get more.

If you have to ask why abortions matter, I would think that you are probably a Romney supporter, he doesn’t care about the innocent either.

I am NOT a fan of Romney, but frankly this is a silly complaint.

This is Massachusetts for goodness sake.

A governor is going to get them to ban abortions, or even slow them down ? How ?

And what governor in this country has ended abortions in his state, even with majority public support ?
