Gingrich: Romney didn't deserve congrats (CNN VIDEO- NEWT -2 min)
CNN ^ | 2-3-12 | Blitzer

Posted on 02/03/2012 2:54:28 PM PST by VinL

In some of his harshest words yet, Newt Gingrich explained Friday why he didn't call rival Mitt Romney after the former Massachusetts pulled a decisive Florida primary victory earlier in the week.

Pointing to Romney's post-South Carolina campaign strategy, which turned noticeably negative against the former House speaker, Gingrich said Romney didn't earn any kudos.

"They outspent me five to one to quote destroy Newt Gingrich?" Gingrich said in an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer." "You know, I think that doesn't deserve congratulations. I think that's reprehensible, I think it's dishonest, and I think it's shameful."

Gingrich took heat over not making the call after Romney's win on Tuesday, given that the former Massachusetts governor had congratulated Gingrich for his South Carolina win just 10 days prior.

Meanwhile, Romney's other rivals, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, both picked up the phone on Tuesday.

"The other candidates all called, but I guess Speaker Gingrich doesn't have our phone number," Romney said Wednesday on NBC's "Today."

While campaigning ahead of Nevada's Saturday caucuses, Gingrich has largely maintained that Romney's full-throated attack strategy in Florida would come back to haunt him, arguing that voters prefer a positive campaign.

"Pretty hard to see how somebody is going to negatively carpet-bomb their way to the nomination," Gingrich said Friday on CNN. "Pretty hard to see how that nomination is going to be worth much if that's all they've got to show for themselves."

The candidate said he had no regrets over not making the traditional phone call.

I guess I didn’t realize candidates actually call each other after each Primary and congratulate the winner? seems stupid to me. Such congrats should be reserved for the end

Romney is a backstabbing SOB.

IF he is the nominee, the GOP will lose both houses AND the Presidency.

And the GOP knows it.

"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"

"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

Poor sport spoiler Romney doing what he does best:

Novak: "Fred Thompson drop-out rumors traced to Romney campaign"

Said Novak: "The rumors were traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign,
trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson
."

"Despite outspending his rivals by huge margins throughout the primaries,
(Mitt Romney, Carpetbagger UT,CA,MA,NH,Mexico) lost Iowa, South Carolina, Florida and California.
The only primaries he won were in Michigan, where Dad was governor; LDS states;
and a few states on Super Tuesday in which his California-obsessed rivals
couldn't spare the cash to advertise.
Only John Connolly in 1968 had a worse cash-to-delegates ratio.
And John McCain rightly did not like Romney's tactics during the primaries.
(W)hen (Romney's early leads) started slipping away, he resorted to unfair,
distorted, scorched-earth negative ads, betting that his opponents couldn't
afford to spend enough for the truth to catch up to his charges."

Perhaps Newt just like many others and isn't a masochist and doesn't want to listen to the Romney plastic, suitable for all occasions, phony baloney smiley faced cartridged retort.

Didn’t Gingrich know that Romney had more money from the start? What did he think was going to be done with it, just print signs and banners? I don’t hear any of the other candidates bringing up Romney’s coffers as an excuse for losing a primary. Focus on the substance of the ads, not the money used to buy them.

I disagree- with Romney- focus like a laser beam on the money— the ill gotten gains.

I would like to see Newt start IGNORING Romney,,ie, when asked why he didn’t call him..to just say NOTHING in response to the question! It would drive the Mittens camp crazy.

The opposite of love is not hate. It’s indifference.
Newt needs to keep his head up and not play in to the Mittens traps.

When I saw Romnuts on FNC, saying that Newt’s attacks on HIM were “sad and pathetic”...I wanted to throw my shoe through the TV. Who is desperate? Who is pathetic?

If I break all my TVs, least then I won’t have to look at Mr. Bushy Brows anymore.
And best of all, I won’t have to watch the Super Bowl, which is supposed to have my Packers playing in it. :-)

He’s right but this isn’t helpful, especially since Newt is already being called a sore loser for whining about the winner-take-all in FL since he’d never question it had he won.

I just don’t think this serves any purpose.

I don't know... with the dire conditions we face in our future... I find it almost insufferable to watch someone buy the presidency again... I had to endure that in 2008 and I find it actually sickens me physically when I see it happening now.

I am not against spending money... and I do not hold it against anyone for being successful and becoming rich... GOD bless them! What disgusts me most is how stupid republican voters are and how easily they can be swayed by repetition... even when it is lies... and how they truly are just sheep being herded.

The majority of American voters are just as stupid as politicians and the left think that we all are. Conservatives see the truth and we all know instinctively when something and/or someone is opposed to our foundational tenants. santorum and newt are disgusting examples of politicians that play a part to win office. The old run to the right during the primary and run to the middle in the general. The problem is that all three men run to the right and then run to the left... and then run to the right and then back to the left again... time after time. Rush talked about this Thursday.

Americans are sick of this crap... we long for truth, honor and someone that will wade into obama and the rats like Patton drove through through Sicily.

Are you serious? romney and his coffers and coughers tried to murder Gingrich. They did everything but actually put a bullet in his back.
It was sadistic, dishonest, and romney was gleeful. Only a fool would have congratulated him for that. santorum shouldn’t have congratulated him either if he had any kind of conscience...which he obviously doesn’t.

Reminds me of the little tantrum the Salamander had after Slick Willy put him in the back of Air Force 1. “Thin skinned” is something I don’t want in a President, and I don’t expect from a life long politico.

What a whiny, self-absorbed little girl.

This is Mr. "Inevitable"?

This is the guy the GOP-E wants us to vote for?

What goes around comes around, Obama has a whole lot more money than Romney, and it is going to be scorched earth carpet bombing for Romney 24/7. Too bad Romney has nothing positive going for him, he has alienated not only a significant portion of his base but has made enemies of GOP leaders such as Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin. He is sure going to need their help to combat Obama, but I don't think they will be very enthusiastic about coming to his rescue.
