Gingrich’s Speech — How to Make a Bad Night Worse
The National Review ^ | February 5, 2012 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 02/05/2012 3:49:00 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Newt Gingrich’s post–Nevada caucus speech included about three minutes of inspired moments about issues and ideas in his usual imaginative and intellectually robust style. So why does he not just stay with that — given that he often seems more dynamic and glib than Romney in his attacks on Obama, and not long ago gained ground despite the attacks against him? Instead, he now turns ad nauseam to the tired reasons why he loses — yes, including lots of Mormons in Nevada — and ends up as Richard Nixon not going to get kicked around any more.

But whether he knows it or not, Gingrich is becoming a caricature of petulance: no concession in Nevada, no call to Romney, no awareness that his inability to raise money at levels of a political rival or to match a competing campaign organization is not necessarily unfair. That’s politics, and Gingrich knows it. I don’t understand why he thinks now losing to Romney in 2012 is solely due to Romney’s innate deviousness in a way McCain beating Romney in 2008 was not — given that Romney was about the same in both 2008 and 2012. Gingrich seems oblivious to the fact that McCain’s style and history gave him advantages over Romney’s money and hardball in ways Gingrich’s own proven liabilities apparently do not.

Gingrich should carefully play a tape of his post–Nevada caucus performance, and then he would quickly grasp that it was little more than a litany of excuses, whining, and accusations — characterized by stream-of-conscious confessionals and rambling repetitions. And, I think, will hurt him more than anything yet in the campaign.

I used to have the utmost respect for VDH. He defended Sarah Palin while many of his colleagues were trying to destroy her. Now they are trying to destroy Newt, and Hansen is piling on.

My backside to him.

“hair and his stage makeup. Aint a pretty sight. He’s hair is almost as white as Newt’s and he has blotches on his face.
Makeup works wonders.”

Yes, he’s pretty bloated and baggy. If should get the nomination and somehow manage to win the election, give him a couple of years in office and see what he looks like then. You’ll think Fred Flintstone is sitting in the Oval Office.

It seems that a number of people, and unfortunately some on FR and almost all of the MSM, believe that when Newt responds to specific questions involving and regarding Romney, Oh geeze, Newt's being so negative.

What do they expect him to say when Romney has not debated on the issues but rather lied about Newt and making personal attacks in the debates and Media ads? Stand there and say what a nice guy Romney is? The thrust of the questions to Newt by the MSM are always deliberately focused in such a manner that Newt's only option is to defend himself by pointing out the serious character flaws Romney has and an aversion for telling the truth with a propensity for intentionally distorting facts.

Again, do you expect Newt to say what a nice person Romney is after all this? Newt's an excellent debater and fighter handling himself almost perfectly in every news conference situation and that is exactly what is needed to take down Obama, the establishment Republicans, the establishment Democrats, and that scares the hell out of all of them. Will Newt make mistakes in the future and as president? Of course! But nothing as compared to Romney who is a corporatist insider and obvious establishment Republican.

As for Santorum not being an establishment Republican, I have two words for you …………… Arlen Spector! Santorum went with the establishment Republicans in backing Spector over Tomey (sp?), the conservative. Although the same can be said of Newt in the NY 23rd race, at least Newt admitted he was wrong. By virtue of the fact Santorum remains in the race with no apparent road to victory, in my opinion, would be indicative of his being a spoiler at the behest of the establishment Republicans.

Those are the facts, like them or not, that we have been dealt. For myself, Newt is the only answer to turning this country around and getting it back on course. Ponder this ……. if Romney per chance won the presidency, how would he and the establishment Republicans deal with the conservative movement? With Romney as the head of the Republican party, how many decades would it take conservatives to regain it's present status, if ever?

Conservatives better unite and work their buns off to get Newt the presidency!

“You’re not alone. I feel the exact same way about Rush. He has always been a hero of conservatism to me. The last few weeks, to say I’ve been disappointed in him would be an understatement!”

Same here. Lately Rush has been playing the equivocation game as well as Bill O’Reilly. He can’t say a positive thing about Newt without quickly disclaiming, “Now I’m not defending Newt!” I don’t find three hours of that worth listening to.

“Mitt is ahead in all the polls to win in these states. Even Newt’s major backer of super pacs Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson has said he would have no trouble supporting Mitt if he is the nominee. Adelson knows the odds of Mitt Winning and is adjusting. Newt may want to burn bridges and tear down the chances of defeating Obama in November because he puts Newt ahead of Country..isn’t it time you all adjusted?”

Adjusted to what? To supporting that despicable, loathsome, vicious, corrupt, rotten, wicked, puffed-up phony cult member? Forget it. I won’t soil my hands.

But you go ahead if you want to. I see from your previous posts that you love Mitt. You even refer to those of us who see him for what he is as “self-righteous religious moralists.” I prefer to just call it discernment.

>> As I recall, there are 58 states <<

I've tried and tried to figure out what Zerobama meant by that remark, and my only viable theory is this:

He probably was referring to the 57 "jurisdictions" that send delegates to the Dhimmi National Convention, to wit:

50 states, plus

51. The District of Columbia

52. Puerto Rico

53. U. S. Virgin Islands

54. American Samoa

55. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariannas

56. Guam

57. "Democrats Abroad" (And yes, they do have a primary.)

But for the life of me, I sure cain't come up with the 58th!

Been off his game?

Sorry, but this guy has been running on high octane taking it right to the Dems and the media; and all you can do is sit here and nitpick about him being off his game?

As I said, the Left loves “Conservatives” like you who make their jobs so much easier in destroying our candidates. Hmmm, let me a guess...you're for Santorum...maybe Paul? Don't worry, they're castigating will be coming sooner rather than later.

You have to say one thing about the Dems, they are loyal to their members...no matter what.

Sadly, if Obama wins, it's because we've doomed ourselves. Here's a thought; if you can do better than Newt...why aren't you running? Seriously; show us (and Newt) how it's done.

There's an old joke about an honest politician. He's the one that stays bought.
It seems to be true that Romney blows with the wind. In a liberal state he made liberal promises and kept them while governor. Now Romney is making conservative promises running for the nomination of a party with conservative primary voters. I hope he's an honest politician.

>> There are five more events before Super Tuesday on Apr 6 . . . . Mitt is ahead in all the polls to win in these states <<

It’s said that the cat has nine lives. And maybe Newt can survive nine “near-death” experiences. So here’s a tally:

1. Newt was removed as Speaker in 1998. A definite near-death experience. But Newt recovers, to become a multi-millionaire Washington influence peddler and best-selling author.

2. In 2012, the “new Newt” enters the GOP POTUS race and soon calls Paul Ryan’s plan “right-wing social engineering.” The conservative punditry opines that Newt is finished. Then his NH campaign staff quits, and the MSM joins the Greek chorus who proclaim Newt’s demise.

3. Newt comes roaring back in Iowa, but again is knocked flat by Romney’s and Paul’s negative ad campaigns. He suffers further humiliation in the NH primary. Then just as it appears that he might do well in SC, Newt launches his attack against Bain. The anti-capitalist rhetoric is promptly denounced by leading lights of conservatism, including many Gingrich supporters, and Newt’s SC poll numbers fall thru the floor.

4. But no, after merely ten more days, Newt scores a historic victory in SC. It’s on to FL, where the polls show him with an impressive lead. Then comes the actual FL vote, and Newt is left bleeding on the floor, all but dead. Still, he limps to NV, where’s he hit again by the Romeny bulldozer. Still resilient, Newt courageously holds a big press conference and vows to live for another fight.

Therefore:

Up to now, Newt has lived thru four major knockouts. And given the old “Rule of Nine Lives,” perhaps he has five more chances to rise from his recurring near-death experiences. Let’s do some counting:

5. Colorado — Romney is poised to win big. Gingrich likely to be knocked down again.

6. Arizona — definite Romney territory, with losta Mormons and lotsa retirees. A probable blow-out for the Bane from Bain.

7. Michigan — Are you kidding? Will go strongly for native son Romney. Newt doesn’t stand a chance.

8. Washington — an extension of “greater New England.” Full of moderate voters and GOP-E types. Another likely KO for Romney over Gingrich.

So it may turn out that Newt has one more “life to live” after Washington. That is, perhaps he can survive one more humiliating loss, then make a big comeback. At that point, however, I’d say he’s gotta run the table with a string of decisive victories in state after state. It can be done, especially if Adelson keeps the dollars flowing to the pro-Gingrich SuperPac. On the other hand, at this juncture, I sure wouldn’t lay down my own chips on Newt.

Yeah, and while we’re at it, let’s whistle past the graveyard. A 68-year-old leopard isn’t going change his spots and grow a “smiley face” between now and November 2012. Simply ain’t gonna happen. Human nature is just that way.

I didn’t see the same presser you saw.

You have worded your reaction exactly the same as the MSM/LSM worded theirs.

THat’s not even my evaluation of it, much less would I attack Newt publicly even if I THOUGHT it.

It won’t help defeat Obama, to attack Newt and switch to Santorum.

It only hurts Newt’s candidacy.

The other goals of defeating Romney and Obama will not be met by attacking Newt and leaving him.

“A 68-year-old leopard isn't’t going change his spots and grow a “smiley face’...”
________________

That may well be true; however, I believe my observation is still valid.

I don't believe I am “whistling past the graveyard;” as I am well aware of Newt's history and have had, and posted, my own doubts about his being able to sustain a campaign w/o “imploding.” I really see no other options out there for Conservatism. So, for me, it's between Romney and Newt. My choice, limited though it is, is Newt.

GO NEWT!!!

isn’t it time you all adjusted?

Nope. As far as I can see, there is little to no substantive difference between Obama and Romney on just about any issue of importance. As such, it doesn't really matter which one won in Novermber, if Romney got the nomination. Either way, we get a pro-abort, pro-gay, pro-"progressive" economics guy who will give us terrible judge choices, keep ObamaCare as is, and push off socialistic fiscal policies onto the country. In fact, having Romney in office to do all that might even be worse than Obama, since it would damage the "conservative" label for another decade (since most people ignorantly equate "conservative" and "Republican").

So no, I don't buy all this junk from these people telling me we just HAVE to get Obama out of there AT ALL COSTS!!!!!

No we don't. Not if it means replacing him with a Republican who will do the same thing.

Frankly, if Romney is the nominee, then I will cease to be a Republican forever and for all time. In fact, I'd love to see a third party rise to present the voters with an option to the twin heads of the socialism snake. Eve, or perhaps ESPECIALLY, if it meant Romney loses. It's time for conservatives to let the GOP-e know that they can no longer run this game on us. They can no longer buy elections and smear our candidates with outright lies. they want to play that game, then I'm all for going nukular on them.

>> I really see no other options out there for Conservatism. <<

The option I see is to work like hell for a GOP takeover of the Senate and continued GOP control of the House.

Then, whether next year’s POTUS is Obama or Romney (and it almost surely will be one or the other), monstrosities like Dodd-Frank and Obamacare can be sharply curtailed — even if not repealed — and no more Sotamayors and no more Kagans will find their ways to the SCOTUS.

He’s more duplicitous than average, but nowhere near the worst.

Still, that’s why it would be wise for those who make a deal with him to disclose some of the details. So he could be held to it.

From what I heard, Mitt did call Newt when Newt won SC. Suposedly that set the “standard” which makes no sense to me. Once the overall contest is over, it’s good manners to congratulate your opponent, not after each individual battle.
