Ex-Sen. Bob Kerrey not running again for Neb. seat

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Former Sen. Bob Kerrey said Tuesday he will not run for the Nebraska Senate seat he gave up more than a decade ago, shutting down hopes for a bid both parties called Democrats' best chance to hold the seat but that Kerrey himself described as a longshot.

The 1992 presidential candidate and former Nebraska governor had considered seeking the Democratic nomination to succeed Sen. Ben Nelson, who replaced Kerrey in the Senate in 2001. Nelson's decision not to run for a third term this year came as a boon to Republicans, who must net four seats to retake the Senate and have made capturing the lone remaining Democratic seat in Nebraska's congressional delegation a priority.

"I have given the decision of becoming a candidate for the U.S. Senate very serious thought and prayer," Kerrey said in an email. "For many reasons I nearly said yes. In the end I choose to remain a private citizen. To those who urged me to do so, I am sorry, very sorry to have disappointed you. I hope you understand that I have chosen what I believe is best for my family and me."

Kerrey, who moved to New York City after giving up his seat, spent nearly a week in Nebraska this month to implore friends and family for advice about whether to run in a state that has drifted ideologically away from him since he left.

Good, at least he had sense to stay out of it.

I saw Kerrey jogging in the Capitol Mall in 1997. He looked old & tired then.

The old “retread” must not be polling well—that’s a good sign.

That’s good.

He was the only Democrat who had a chance of holding that seat.

Safe Republican in November.

I think it is less about common sense (he has none) and more about the wave of negative opinion polling and advertisements that swept across the state when it was announced that he might run. I personally considered the ads to be too easy on him but the outcome is still satisfactory.

Worthless governor, worthless POS senator. More proof that image (executive hair and dating movie stars) does not guarantee any competence in representing constituents who voted for you.

He’s not running. Cut him some slack. He was a decorated and wounded Seal in RVN. He’s no longer in Politics, so let’s respect his service to the country.

He was awarded the MOH. That gets him a lot of respect in my book.

He’s been a Manhattan wine and brie commie for over a decade. Maybe he surmises that won’t sell in Nebraska these days.

That's what I thought about George Allen's situation here in VA in '06... then came "macaca." No Republican victory should be deemed "safe"... anywhere.

Yes, he was. And, as another poster has pointed out, he also received the Congressional Medal of Honor. And John McCain was a war hero who was captured and tortured by the VC.

None of which change the fact that neither of these men are worthy of the offices to which they might (and in McCain's case, DID) aspire. A good soldier does not necessarily make a good -- and certainly not necessarily a CONSERVATIVE -- politician.

Respect their contributions, to be sure. But for our country's sake, don't VOTE for them!

Considering the voting public we have, I am pretty sure you are on to something, Scott. Some even think Obama could win TX over Romney.

It’s a shame.

He’s a big lib who loves Obamacare.

He probably would have won.

And when Texas falls, so falls the country. No non-democrat will ever be elected to the WH again.

Did I say anything to diss his military service? I’m a former Marine NCO, retired AF officer and I said nothing about his service. He is also still involved in politics, advising and working with the democrat party and his actions while a working politician earn him little respect as well.

Military service, valor and awards are actions at a point in time and do not confer lifetime respect or admiration of all things that one does or says after that point. He’s a POS democrat and a sham as a representative of the people of Nebraska.

General Benedict Arnold was a decorated hero of the revolution who threw away that admiration by betraying his country. There are plenty of modern day examples of people who were decorated veterans or honored politicians who went on to disrepsect the Constitution and to work against it.

Respect has to be earned anew each and every day by your words and actions; not by sitting on your laurels.

To your point: he used to tag Linda Rondstadt. That was huge in 1980. Not so much today. Everything needs to be kept in the proper context.

Yeah, and he also dated Debra Winger as well as endorsing Hillary Clinton and Al Franken among others. With regard to context; when his name came up this time, all of the movie star and singer ties were pushed out front again to remind everyone of his “connections”.

They really tried to coax him in but wouldnt do it....the guy will probably get payback from the WH.
