Fox News Poll: Santorum Surges Nationally After Three-State Sweep By Dana Blanton February 10, 2012

Rick Santorum has surged nationally in the race for the 2012 Republican nomination after his three-state sweep this week, while Mitt Romney has lost ground among GOP primary voters. In addition, most GOP voters say the nomination race isn’t over -- someone other than Romney could still win. That’s according to a Fox News poll released Friday.

The new poll was conducted over four nights this week -- Monday through Thursday -- so it provides a unique opportunity to compare Santorum’s support before and after his wins in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri. And the results are striking.

Click here to view full Fox News poll results.

In interviews conducted on Monday and Tuesday nights -- immediately before the news of his victories -- Santorum received the backing of 17 percent of GOP primary voters. That was well behind Romney (35 percent) and Newt Gingrich (26 percent), and slightly ahead of Ron Paul (14 percent).

In interviews conducted on Wednesday and Thursday nights -- after his wins -- Santorum’s support nearly doubled, which put him tied at the top with Romney for those two days at 30 percent. That’s an increase of 13 percentage points. Over the last two nights, Romney also received 30 percent, a drop of 5 points. Gingrich came in at 16 percent, down 10 points. Paul’s support held steady at 15 percent.

Looking at the results from all four nights of this week’s interviewing, Romney retains his frontrunner spot with 33 percent, followed by Santorum at 23 percent, Gingrich at 22 percent and Paul at 15 percent.

>> Gingrich needs to make a graceful exit <<

Yeah, sure, like the Sun needs to rise in the west tomorrow morning, or like Bibi Netanyahu needs to convert to Islam. Dream on.

This is not the same world as it was in 2006. It’s barely the same planet.

Well said.

I've nothing to be careful about, my friend.

If Santorum gets the nomination, I'll stay home. There's no reason to waste precious gas trying to stop the other side's landslide victory.

But, thanks for your post. I enjoyed it.

“Why is this a good thing? The only thing we really know for sure about him -— his unrelenting and often seen as sanctimonious pro-life social focus -— is precisely what will turn off the majority of Americans, particularly women.”

in other words, you hate him not because he’s a RINO but because he actually is a conservative. Gotcha.

Might as well vote for Obama to get your beloved abortions.

Better you stay home than go to the polls and vote for Kaine and Obama.

Yes, it is sad, but the guy who never lost an election, and has been re-elected Governor of Texas 3 times, is sadly no longer in the race, and we have what we have.

Gingrich hasn’t won an election since 1998, and never had to compete for more than 200,000 votes or so.. Santorum hasn’t won an election since 2000, but at least it was a full-state election, where he won 2.4 million votes. Romney hasn’t won an election since 2002.

Ron Paul keeps getted elected, but in a single congressional district with no real competition — does that count?

Santorum got more votes in his disastrous senate loss (1.6 million), than Newt Gingrich got in any of his victories. In fact, it’s likely Santorum got more DIFFERENT voters to choose him in his 2006 loss than Gingrich has gotten in all his campaigns put together.

WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' PENNSYLVANIA TO WIN IN NOVEMBER!!

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2844749/posts

Rick is now the strongest GOP candidate in PA. Apparently we Keystone Staters are a bunch of knuckle dragging Papists.

Let's cross our toes and hope he doesn't sign another TARP

Santorum didn't vote or tarp or the GM bailout nor was he for it.

Oh, for heaven's sake calm down. I don't hate anyone, including Santorum.

I don't want him to be nominated because he's a sure loser in November.Period. Really. Santorum won't even carry Pennsylvania. It's has nothing to do with hating him, I just want to be sure Obama’s voted out of office.

With Santorum as his opponent, Obama can work on his golf game.

And if you thought about this--strategically and not emotionally--you would agree.

But don't burn yourself out. This is a LONG process.

Thanks.

Your insult is exactly why Americans beyond the walls of FR will not buy into Santorum. We don’t want lunatic fringe in the WH — from either side of the political aisle.

PA voter here. I was part of the reason Santorum lost his last bid for senate. I was so disheartened over Rick's support of Specter, I was just another de-energized voter.

However, in this race, I have to get behind Santorum or Gingrich. I'll overlook both Newt's serial adultery and Rick's support of Specter. Santorum actually has a better shot of Pennsylvania union support than anybody else in this race, including Obama. Most union guys I know don't care about gay marriage, and while most are pro-life, they aren't willing to vote to save a baby over their job. Accusations of "sanctimonious" won't drive the union vote away and promise of manufacturing jobs just may attract it. People in PA are pretty ticked off about Obama and that pipeline business.

The ‘fickle finger of fate’ is definitely prevalent amongst the GOP primary electorate this time. The before and after numbers for Santorum indicate that there isn't a single candidate in this field that can command get loyality from the voters.

I find it continually amazing that people look at polls and think they are actually drivers of the election, or are dictates to us about what we have to do, rather than being a snapshot of what we have decided to do.

So Santorum is surging. That isn’t someone in a control room forcing us to accept Santorum as our candidate — it is a sign that, at the moment, people are deciding they could actually support him. THe voters being polled don’t seem to be turned off, as some other freepers have feared.

But if they are, it will show up soon enough. Let’s vet Santorum. Let’s find everything we can about him. If he survives, he can win. If not, Gingrich can rise again, if voters are willing to still support him. If not, it’s nothing WE did, it’s nothing the polls did, it is the CANDIDATES.

I don’t want to pick a conservative who can’t win. I certainly don’t want to pick a moderate who can’t win — I don’t really want a moderate who CAN win.

Can Gingrich win? Well, not if the voters won’t vote for him, and that’s what the polls suggest. Some though here seem to argue that it’s Santorum freepers that have somehow forced Gingrich to poll badly, and to lose votes.

I can guarantee them that if freepers could snap their fingers and elect a President, it wouldn’t be Santorum, and it certainly wouldn’t be Gingrich. It wouldn’t be Bachmann, or Perry, or Cain either.

These were the choices we had, not the choices conservatives would make if we didn’t have to worry about electability (or put more simply, the requirement that a candidate get a plurality of the votes, and win 270 electoral votes).

" So we are staking our hopes on a guy that couldn’t win his own seat in his own state? "

The Newt supporters are running this old tired old crap again ? you make it sound like he never won a election in his own state.
In case you have not noticed ? Rick Santorum is gaining support in his own state as we speak now... what ? you have the old crank and dial telephone ? get with the times... this is 2012 ...
