Rick Santorum Says Mitt Romney Is 'Desperate'; GOP Contest Will Be 'Two Person Race' By March
ABC via Yahoo News ^ | 2/12/2012 | George Stephanopoulos

Posted on 02/12/2012 7:36:53 PM PST by Republican Wildcat

Still riding high off of his three-win streak in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado last week, Rick Santorum blasted Republican rival Mitt Romney on Sunday, saying the GOP frontrunner was getting "desperate" by trying to paint Santorum as anything less than a true conservative.

"For him to suggest that I'm not the conservative in this race - you know, there's - you reach a point where desperate people do desperate things," Santorum told me on "This Week."

Santorum's comments were in response to statements Romney made earlier in the week that both Santorum and his fellow GOP rival Newt Gingrich are "Republicans who acted like Democrats."

"That's pretty funny for Mitt Romney saying I'm acting like a Democrat," Santorum said Sunday. "Another candidate has come up to challenge him, and this time he's having trouble finding out how to go after someone who is a solid conservative, who's got a great track record of attracting Independents and Democrats and winning states as a conservative."

Santorum said that despite his third place finish in the Maine caucus on Saturday, he expects to "do exceptionally well" in the Arizona and Michigan primaries the end of the month. The former Pennsylvania Senator his strong showing in the next two contests would make the GOP nomination a "two person race."

Santorum credited Romney's success thus far not to his policies or record, but to his fundraising prowess. Romney currently leads Santorum in the delegate count 105 delegates to Santorum's 71 delegates.

"He's been able to win in these early primary states by, you know, beating the tar out of his opponents by four- and five-to-one on television," Santorum said. "Well, of course, in the fall, he's not going to have the most money."

It’s a two man race now.

C’mon Newt. Do the right thing. Pull out and support Rick.

I’m trying to figure out who has the bigger head, RMoney or Mr. Rogers. Ties I would say.

I want Newt to knock both these sanctimonious idiots on their rears. I am sick and tired of arrogant career po;iticians.

Conservative talkradio star Bill Cunningham called on Newt to do just that only a few minutes ago.
Newt can't be Mitt and Mitt can't beat Obama.
Newt has lost his mojo and the longer he drags it out the better the chance Mitt will win and that means Obama will win.

If Obama is reelected it will be all Newt's fault.

I think Rick's rise began when Mark Levin endorsed him.

Romney...was getting “desperate” by trying to paint Santorum as anything less than a true conservative.

Well lets see if Rick measures up to Romneys idea of what a Conservative is

Married to one woman Check

Has 5 children Check

More than 5 so Rick is more Conservative than Romney...

No, I do not think Romney is more conservative than Santorum. I don’t think Romney is very conservative at all. I think Santorum is only socially conservative and way too pius about that.

The only real conservative is Gov. Rick Perry and Newt isn’t far behind. God willing, conservatives will listen to Sarah’s advice.

Well, Rick’s is a pretty fair assessment. Frankly, I’m stunned and perplexed that the race has turned into Mitt v Rick, but I’m thankful for it. Bob

“huh? so you think Mitt is more conservative than Santorum? or that Santorum is NOT a real conservative?

Anyone who doubts that Santorum is a real conservative needs to get their head checked.”

You’ve hit the nail on the head here. The Romneybots don’t have the guts to come on FR and advocate for their candidate upfront on policy, cause Romney has ZERO conservative accomplishments and they know they’ll get laughed off the forum.

So their strategy (in keeping with the candidate himself) has been to tear down every other candidate and point out an issue or two where they may have wandered off the conservative reservation over the years, all the while ignoring the fact that Romney has been on the wrong side of just about every major policy issue in his political life.

We’ve seen them go after Perry, then Cain, then Newt, and now Santorum. And unfortunately, the strategy has been successful with the others, either forcing them out or in Newt’s case driving up his negatives to the point where his candidacy is reaching the point of near implosion.

So now that they’ve destroyed everyone else, they come on here with this laughable notion that somehow Santorum is not a true conservative cause why? He endorsed Arlen Spector? Well, sure, that wasn’t his finest hour, but they completely ignore the fact that Mitt Romney essentially IS Arlen Spector!!

I sure hope the folks here on FR are finally wising up to Romney’s slime machine. Let’s not let them tear down (possibly if Newt does not recover) the last conservative candidate standing.

You mean like Little Ricky pulled out for Newt?

Little Ricky got a virtual pass from Romney’s blood money machine used against Newt, to such an extent there was no one left to vote for in Iowa.

The giant in the race has been held hostage by the Marxists, liberals, RINOS, and the media. Santorum has failed Newt, and it won’t be forgotten that he has for months given Romney a pass.

So, to your point, Santorum gets no withdrawal from Newt.

Afterall, Romney has been providing the kid barker with his shoestrings.
to slow Newt.

Wait until Ricky gets a bomb of his own unremarkable history erupting 24/7, from Romney.

Wonder if Newt will return the pile-on favor Ricky first gave him. Somehow I think Newt is not that small.

Get popcorn.

Santorum has no choice other than to be pius about his conservatism, otherwise the Romney billion dollar smear maching will make him look more liberal than Nancy Pelosi, just like it did to all the others before him.

You want Romney vs Santorum? The establishment wins either way.

LEARN about Santorum. You won't like what you find out.

Santorum give Romney a pass?

What planet are you on? You obviously didn’t watch the Florida debate where Santorum ripped Romney a new one on Romneycare. Or where Santorum ripped him on believing in Man-made global warming, or supporting TARP.

I wish people like you would call into Rush and Levin and try to spew this crap at them that you do here. I need a good laugh.
