The Washington state Senate has passed a bill to charge electric car owners a $100 annual fee to compensate for the lack of gas taxes they pay. Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, the Camano Island Democrat who sponsored the bill, says while electric cars are good for the environment, they put the same wear and tear on the state's roads that gas vehicles do.

The same bill passed in the Senate last year but failed in the House.

Yeah, that’s it. Gov’t needs to tax all innovation and those who would improve technology. Wait! Isn’t Microsoft in WA state?

only $100.00?!! What a deal!
That’s less than ten bucks a month.

Considering there are 57 States, did zero eliminate two months out of the year and didn’t tell us?

this is a special session since these bozos...democrat rule as usual...couldn't get anything done during the regular session....its costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of dollars...

anyway, seeing as we're over a billion in the red, so far this "special" session, they've passed a gay marriage bill, and introduced a marijuana bill, but now we're getting into the real meat of what they want to do....raise taxes so their precious teachers and other govt workers can keep raking it in....

not that I could care about the electric car owners....the do run the roads like the rest of us...but don't they already pay sales tax?...

bumbling idiots....when will the voters smarten up?

I’m confident that they are thinking about taxing shoes for those that walk to work.

“The bill does not apply to hybrid vehicles or to those that don’t exceed 35 mph.”

What about PLUG IN Hybrids?

If someone drives a Volt and only goes 35 miles a day, they may never use the Gasoline Motor. The new Prius Plug In Hybrid is coming out soon.

Looks like Plug In discrimination to me.

I also laughed when I read this proposal, albeit for different reason.
For years these envir wackos have been getting a pass that the rest of society has had to pay the price in higher taxes.
They are now feeling the bite.

Isn’t electricity already taxed?

They need to treat this electricity issue the same as farm diesel vs non farm diesel.
In farm diesel there is dye added that is apparent in filler pipe if pumped into road vehicle tank.
Farm fuel is not road taxed.
Neither is electricity at home outlet road taxed.

There are heavy penalties for using non road diesel in road vehicles.

Same should hold true in electric vehicles, but coloring electrons might be somewhat difficult

So, the fact that electric car users aren’t paying transportation taxes put on gasoline is irrelevant.

It just doesn’t get any better than this. Drive a green car to save the enviroment and we will tax you even more because you aren’t using enough fossil fuels.

we will tax you even more because you

Same thing they have done to tobacco users for last twenty years. We will tax you to make you give it up, then tax those still using to make up the lost revenue, and if we ever succeed in getting everyone to quit smoking we will tax your CHOCOLATE

This comment below the article was too funny:

If there were a tax on carbon then there would be no need for this additional tax on electric vehicles. The market would take care of the problem as soon as people realized the true cost of their continued use of petroleum.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

So liberal fascists could tax the chicken’s owner for wear and tear on the road.

Oh, look! There’s a dog crossing that road. Find the owner and tax him.
