BREAKING: Mitt Romney Urged Obama to Embrace the Individual Mandate
Red State ^ | March 2, 2012 | Erick Erickson

Had Michigan not been as close, the Democrats would have waited to spring this on us in the general election. Luckily we have it now and I hope Ohio voters are paying attention.

In July 2009, Mitt Romney wrote an op-ed in USA Today urging Barack Obama to usean individual mandate at the national level to control healthcare costs.

On the campaign trail now, Mitt Romney says the individual mandate is appropriate for Massachusetts, but not the nation. Repeatedly in debates, Romney has said he opposes a national individual mandate.

But back in 2009, as Barack Obama was formulating his healthcare vision for the country, Mitt Romney encouraged him publicly to use an individual mandate. In his op-ed, Governor Romney suggested that the federal government learn from Massachusetts how to make healthcare available for all.

This bombshell USA Today editorial from less than three years ago surfaces only now? Don’t Santorum and Gingrich have anyone doing opposition research? What an embarrassment.

I don’t understand why this is “Breaking News.” He wrote the op-ed in ‘09.

Well, I am glad this is out now! How is Mitt going to worm his way out of this one?

Was Heritage Foundation in favor of mandates? I thought they are as conservative as it gets.

I consider myself as fiscal & monetary conservative and I am in favor of mandates because I am sick and tired of having to pay higher healthcare premiums to pay for those who do not bother to buy insurance, yet show up in hospitals after getting into a serious accident or contacting a serious disease or requiring expensive surgery.

Why should I have to support these free loaders? Why must the hospital go through lot of legal expense to try to recover the unpaid bills?

“I consider myself as fiscal & monetary conservative...”

Then you may want to reconsider what you consider yourself.

Ted Nugent's endorsement got my attention. I wavered.

This got my attention MORE.

If Mitt is the nominee, the presidential slot on my ballot remains blank.

Period.

That reminds me of the old tale about the almost brand new Cadillac that was being sold for a $100.00, they couldn’t get the smell out after someone died in it.

Old guys here will remember that old car story from the 60s.

To my post above let me add that I am 100% in favor of PRIVATE insurance only. I am 100% against government run health service of any kind.

That was then and this is now. There has been many a change of mind on Romney's part since 2009 and there is sure to be many more even before November.

The problem is 0bama is the better liar and will clean up with Romney politically in the meantime.

Romney cannot out-deceive 0bama.

I have reconsidered it many times, and every year I become more conservative. I want every one to be responsible for their own health care expense. I do not want to pay your bills.

You cam consider yourself whatever you like but the fact is you’re not a conservative in any way, shape, or form. The fact is that the Federal government has absolutely no Constitutional authority to force me to purchase anything.

Anyone supporting the “mandate” is an enemy of the Constitution. Period.
