Santorum wins the Church Lady vote, Gingrich can't offset

Posted on 03/06/2012 8:27:15 PM PST by mtrott

I'm a huge Newt supporter and will continue to support him, but it seems the home schooling Catholic has enraptured the Christian evangelical and "church lady" voters. This would seem to be corroborated by some of the exit polling data presented tonight.

For you younger members, there used to be a skit on Saturday Night Live which featured an ignorant, puritanical lady who saw Satan in everything in modern culture. Even though large numbers of evangelical Christians actually believe the Catholic church is apostate, for some reason, they are readily latching on to Santorum, apparently because of his overt incorporation of religious themes and controversies into his campaign.

What made me think of the Church Lady was an interview I saw tonight on CNN. They interviewed a white haired lady in, I believe, Ohio. Upon being asked about the fact that Santorum had failed to get delegate slates in three Ohio districts, she responded "well, if God wants Santorum to win, he will win, REGARDLESS OF THE DELEGATES"!

With supporters so divorced from reality, what effective argument can Newt make, and how can he compete?

I also support Newt. And I agree with you. Conservative women don’t like him. Period. And it’s not just church ladies.

Maybe the average person is revolted by you and thus won’t vote for Newt.

Newt finished third in OK and third in Tennessee.

If he’s appealing to folks, it isn’t the southerners or the folks in the most conservative state of Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, Santorum won both and North Dakota.

If there’s a brokered convention (looking more likely), the lady you’ve disparaged might be proved correct.

I’ll support Newt if he is the nominee, but there is nothing “ignorant” about supporting Santorum. Santorum is clearly committed to fighting abortion, sodomite “marriage”, etc. Newt has a lot of personal baggage and is not entirely trustworthy.

I will not vote for Mittens, but I’ll support any of the others. Each has his own strengths, and we need to stop sniping at anyone except Mittens and Obamalini.

Yes, well, maybe. But if there is a brokered convention, and they go to deal making, they will be dealing with DELEGATES, won’t they?

Uninformed voters that should consider Rick Santorum's endorsement of Spector ..who gave us Obamacare; Santorum's endorsement of Romney who set the state for Obamacare; Santorums vote for title 10 and Santorum's vote for Sonia Sotomyer who is very pro choice.

guess uninformed voters support a man that talks the talk but has NOT walked the walk

I voted for Newt.

It sounds to me that you just don't get out that much.

Hey, I might vote for Santo over Romney, if it comes to that. I am just trying to understand why, even though Newt has, in my opinion, made the most powerful arguments against the federal usurpation of religious liberty in the “contraception rights” debacle, religious folks latched on to Santo, despite Newt’s clearly superior energy, economic, and jobs plans. Just trying to be objective here.

I think Newt should withdraw in favor of the only true conservative with a cha- Oh hell, I’m not gonna do that. Once again, anyone who supports Santorum is “ignorant”, “puritanical”, etc.
Cracker please.

Compared to cheating on two wives before moving onto the third, supporting Dede Scuzzyfavor, calling conservatives “inhumane” for wanting to deport illegals, and doing global warming commercials on a couch with Pelosi?

I think supporters of both are informed, the [problem is they have to settle for one in order to stop Mittens and right now Santorum is winning states while Newt (with the exception of his home state) is coming in third.

Newt has stumbled walkin’ the walk quite a few times himself.

I don’t need to waste any time pointing those things out. We have all heard everyone’s flaws to the point of nausea.

Apparently the voters have decided they like Santorum in many states.

Get back to the important issues, you know, like sodomy and such. Who cares about energy, jobs, security, taxes, etc?

Poor choice of words when trying to make the case, however futile it may be, for Newt.
