Woman reportedly arrested for painting fingernails on Southwest Airlines flight
FoxNews ^ | February 7, 2012

A California woman on a Southwest Airlines flight was reportedly arrested and detained after a verbal confrontation with a flight attendant regarding her nail polish.

Jeanie Daniels told WOFL that she was painting her nails in her seat on a Southwest Airlines flight from California to Texas last month when a flight attendant asked her to stop. Daniels then went to the bathroom to finish and later began arguing with the flight attendant, who waited outside the bathroom.

Daniels was handcuffed and detained for more than 10 hours when the flight landed in Houston.

"She started screaming at me and wouldn't stop,” Daniels told the station. "I said I'm sorry, I apologize and I put it away. About ten minutes into the flight I discovered I only had two nails left to paint so I thought well if I went to the bathroom and did it, it wouldn't offend anyone."

I’m not sure if how flammable or toxic the nail polish is, but the fumes, especially in an enclosed space, with recirculated air, are extremely annoying and offensive. The other passengers who paid good money for their seats should not have to put up with that.

Bravo to the flight attendant for dealing with the boorish, inconsiderate fool.

How did the flight attendant know she was painting her nails in the restroom?

I can relate. Sat behind a cranky 3 yr old on the way back from Mephis Sunday night. Temper tantrums, kicking my seat, crying, yelling - parents threatening to beat the crap out of him, but powerless to do so on a crowded aircraft. Oh, it was memoriable.

I think you can personally relate to this, but I would have great difficulty even breathing around that stuff.

. . . over some dirtbag who has no concept of hygiene.

I thought you agreed not to talk about that flight we took to Des Moines.

Nothing can ruin a flight like a kid out of control. If they want to clamp down on something...get some duct tape for the screaming kid!

Overall, it’s just a rude thing to do, not courteous to any of the other passengers at all.

I certainly concur in that statement.

Having witnessed first hand a woman doing nail polish in flight, I applaud all those involved in this case. Polish releases aeromatic fumes at altitude which are noxious beyond belief.

I wouldn’t know enough to comment on the possible fire hazard, but I’ve experienced the pleasure of being in the same plane with someone doing her nails... kinda like that guy rudeboy posted...

So what’s the big deal about nail polish?

Well, if someone accidentally lit a cigarette or their underwear you might have a big explosion...............

I say HOORAY to SWA and the flight attendant who was not afraid to do her job. For anyone without sufficient imagination to realize the problem with painting your fingernails while in a crowded airliner cabin—just consider it equivalent to a small version of someone spraying their shoes with a can of enamel spray paint. The noxious odor would be in the air for some time and there would be the possibility of over spray and damage to the cabin. Further imagine that the “jack booted” flight attendant then said “Ma’am, please stop doing that on the airliner” and the poor innocent lady proceeded to continue doing it and loudly verbally abused the flight attendant.

I say that this is just another example of a (blonde variant) self-centered “Ah demands mah rights to do what ah wants to do” type. And, in this case, the 10 hours of inconvenience she “suffered” was well deserved and brought on by herself.

And for any of you posters who say you don’t or won’t fly anymore because of “jackbooted” flight attendants, I say thank you very much & keep it up. On my last flight to Tampa Bay I actually enjoyed some (rare on SWA) additional elbow room.

And, by the way, the only “jackbooted” South West Air flight attendant I would have seen would have been in a fantasy or a day dream. But in such a fantasy the flight attendant would be known as a “stewardess”, so it would be clear that it was just a dream.

"Does she have so many it becomes hard to keep track of them all?"

Well, given the mentality involved, probably so. Nail polish solvents are VERY combustible.

You can fly or not, I don’t care, but it’s a lie that airlines are not happy unless they boss you around and stomp on you with jackboots. They want to get along. Now I won’t argue if you say that individuals abuse their petty power sometimes, but not that there is an industry wide abuse of customers just for kicks.

"It stinks!!! I don't think she should have been arrested but she's an inconsiderate bitch!!!"

If she went to the bathroom to do it after being told not to do it in the cabin, I think that should be reasonable. Something doesn't pass the smell test here.

A quest I wish I had not undertaken but feel obliged to see through to some reasonable end.

You'll note capitals in my posts. For a couple of days I've been allowed unlimited movement from my wrist outward. Unlimited, as in . . un-oww-lim-oww-i-oww-ted.
