Bunker Mentality: The booming business of Doomsday
FOX News ^ | 3/7/12 | Perry Chiaramonte

From the society’s wealthiest and most powerful class to rural off-the-grid types, people are preparing for the worst, and sparing no expense on elaborate underground shelters, buying years’ worth of non-perishable foods and stockpiling fuel and ammunition. Some have embraced the term “preppers,” although precisely what they are preparing for varies.

“We realized that we were totally unprepared should something happen,” said Jack Jobe, who was prompted to prep for a natural disaster after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Jobe, who will be featured on an upcoming episode of the NatGeo’s “Doomsday Preppers,” has invested about $3,000 in a safe room in the cellar of his family’s Colorado home. The basement bunker has reinforced steel doors, along with two 55-gallon drums of water, a four-month supply of food and a cache of guns and ammunition. “Fleeing won’t be an option,” Jobe told FoxNews.com. “We are ready to survive in place.”

If the present spending continues I don’t see how we can avoid a collapse like that of Argentina ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yerKMQc7-w&feature=grec_index )but on a global scale.

But the market is up you say, yeah it’s up using billions in ‘printed’ money in the hands of corrupted bankers, investors and their cronies. The world is now flooded with fake and faux money. The game is so rigged and now even the ‘house’ is starting to lose.

When the whole thing tanks as it will what do you think the entiled class will do when they can’t get their cell phones, their food stamps and EBT cards, rent vouchers and so forth.

What we will see is a much more violent version of Argentina, (checkout what is going on in Greece).

American has an even a larger entitlement minded population and much more violent and armed onen than Argentina or Greece.

I see many many small business wiped out by flash mob looting, and see rape, robbery and murder for murder sake. Many of these ‘yutes’ will think no more about killing you than most people think about stepping on a roach. That will be the test of many. Most preppers I know are Christian people and they will hesitate to do what they might have to do to stop the ‘yutes’. On the other hand the ‘yutes’ won’t think twice nor lose a minute of sleep, in fact they will smile and laugh about it.

Think of this quote which is one of my favorites:

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8)” (1998)
Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

On top of all who knows how many saboteurs (Islamic, Chinese etc) and sleepers have crossed our borders and are now just waiting to cause havoc.

For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpfull. You can download it at:

http://tomeaker.com/kart/Preparedness1j.pdf

NOTE! THIS IS A FREE DOWNLOAD. I DO NOT MAKE ONE CENT OFF MY PREPAREDNESS MANUAL!

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.

As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
NIV Proverbs 22:3

Lastly this for the doubters and the scoffers.

“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.

Underestimation can be fatal.”

I saw a show recently, or rather part of it. Either the "History Channel" or "Discovery" Most people were dead and it showed the survivors and the pillagers and rioters. Interestingly, I didn't see one single "person of color" portrayed among the looters and pillagers.

While you can go overboard doing this, I don’t see this as unhealthy. In fact, this is a wave of personal stimulous spending, as people are buying a couple of years of food today. Who else is stimulating the economy?

A very interesting read.

Perhaps one of the best bits of advice outside the realm of what to stockpile is the post-SHTF cultural advice to “be uninteresting.”

Don’t be THAT guy who’s all tactical and clean and visible. Be just as scruffy and rough as the rest. Don’t draw covetous attention in a time of extreme want. sound advice.

Sounds like “After Armageddon”. A global flu pandemic along the lines of the 1918 flu pandemic takes down society.

On a side note.

And if everyone else is lined up for cheese and water, *consider* joining them.

If everything, or virtually everything is dual use, you waste virtually nothing. If you weekly prepper-spend the equivalent of one family dinner out a week on ‘prepping’ you accumulate the right stuff very quickly. Priorities ...

First, strategically, you have to decide to survive in place or bug out. Where we live, (suburban Atlanta) staying means dying. We could stockpile enough, but we are in range of the Zombies. It would be a matter of a few days before we and our neighbors are overrun. We have some very nice Mormon neighbors who tried to be discrete as they remodeled their basement for obvious purposes, but they are gentle people who stand no chance of ‘standing their ground.’

If you think you can defend your ‘castle’ read Holding Your Ground: Preparing for Defense if it All Falls Apart by Joe Nobody [ Amazon ] That book as well as the e-book “Lights Out” by David Crawford convinced me of the folly of trying to survive in suburbia. It is folly.

So our plan is to bug out. And that has its own issues. We have a good location, but it makes rotating stockpiles difficult due to distance. There's always issues.

Plus I travel a lot, and I HAVE to have my wife and family committed to action even if I am a thousand miles away. (reference 77 Days in September by Ray Gorham). I may not be able to communicate, and I HAVE to ‘know’ they are OK and on the move. Mission first.

sigh There are few GOOD scenarios.

No city can feed its own people. How’d the water and cheese get there?

(but I get your point).

Please add me to the Preppers’ Ping List. I don’t post a lot but read just about every thread I see on the subject.

Thanks!

The worst place to be is on the road. So if you can’t get out early you are most likely better off at home.

” So if you can’t get out early you are most likely better off at home. “

One of Kartographer’s favorite quotes —

“When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

I implemented my bug-out plan when I took early retirement (health reasons) to a tiny, remote hamlet in the SW wilderness...

In Luke 19:13, Jesus tells us to “...OCCUPY till I come.”

We’re just following the orders of The Conquering Hero.

Some of these people are real total nutjobs (poles reversal?), but none of my business.
When they start demanding funding from federal taxes, I will start freaking out.
