Gore: 'Our democracy has been hacked' By Daniel Strauss - 03/13/12 10:18 AM ET

Al Gore said on Tuesday that America's democracy "has been hacked" and advocated for the use of digital tools to improve the government.

Speaking to the high-tech crowd at the South by Southwest technology conference in Austin, Texas, the former vice president said that social media and digital technology should be used to "change the democratic conversation."

"Our democracy has been hacked," Gore said, according to CNN. "It no longer works, in the main, to serve the interests of our people."

He also urged the audience to begin a new, online "Occupy Democracy" movement, according to The Associated Press.

Gore went on to describe his vision for a "wiki-democracy" of "digital flash mobs calling out the truth" and "a government square that holds people accountable."

His comments came during a panel with Sean Parker, who founded Napster and helped start Facebook.

Both men said that digital tools and social media could be used to counteract the influence of money in politics, urging people to do more than "like" something on Facebook.

"It's not enough to take that small action online," said Parker, who was portrayed by Justin Timberlake in the move "The Social Network." "A referral or notification is not really the same thing as showing up at a protest or actually opening up your wallet."

Gore also criticized the Supreme Court's ruling in the Citizens United case, which helped increase the influence of super-PACs in elections.

"When we win the conversation, then the pressure can be put on the politicians and elected officials to do the right thing," Gore said.

I don’t think even many on the left like Al Gore. He is just an old dull fat white guy who lost. He is like so 1990’s.

When he lost the election, today’s college students were 8 years old.

Hey, manc - things are good here. Hope you're enjoying this nice, warm early spring in your little corner of Florida as well.

It has definitely become a source of irritation to me that America's increasingly miseducated "youts" don't know the difference between a democracy and a republic and what's worse: their unionized school teachers do not or will not correct them.

This country wasn’t founded as a democracy. Not sure what it is now though.

Is that photo real? Must be pretty old. Albert hasn't been that thin since he started comforting himself on a triple dose Twinkie diet Jan. 20, 2001.

If a tree falls in the room and there isn't a handy black fellow to catch it ...

Gore is only 'hacked' that Obama was able to do what Gore wanted to do.

I guess he will just have to go to his reward being satisfied with having "invented" the Internet . . . . . . . . . and the global warming hoax!

Hay dumb-ass, we know your dad bought your grades and you were two stupid to get a degree. But damn, it is a republic, not a democracy.

Flash mob for the truth? People showing up en masse for protests. I seem to remember a lot of those in 2009 and 2010. Let's see how Al Gore reacted:

“Single-minded proponents of a dangerous and extremist agenda are working feverishly to roll back every Democratic gain we’ve ever made,”

“The Tea Partiers now calling the shots in the Republican Party won’t back away from their radical agenda.”

So, if the wrong people do it we have a "dangerous and extremist agenda"

As for extreme use of power, all of that comes from the government. Toyota cannot force me to buy a car. Ford cannot force me to buy a car. Government Motors ... well, they can force me to pay for a car when their friends in Washington are involved. The cure to these problems are reducing the power and range of operation (and budget) of the government, not increasing it. If you increase it to have your "government square that holds people accountable", you will soon end up with show trials including the question "are you now or have you ever been a Ford owner?" when the government decides that not enough people are buying Chevy Volts.

Also, Al, you digital tool, here is some binary logic you should be able to understand: Bush won, you zero.

Really, Algore? Tell us WHO’S done the hacking and what evidence you have that it’s happened.

Oh, wait... you’re not big on the substantiation thing, are you...

It appears now that you’ve milked your Glo-bull Warming cash cow to its end, you’re on to the next new snake-oil pitch... right, fatboy?

So, Al... do you still make the claim your Mommy used to sing you to sleep with the “Union Label” song...

...when you were 27 years old?

And to think the country was sooooo close to electing your bizarre self to the Presidency.

Many times over the years, I have thanked God for Ralph Nader.
