Facing heightened pressure to revive his presidential bid, Rick Santorum was forced to explain another apparent misstep as he courted Louisiana voters Friday, the eve of a critical contest in a Republican nomination battle that increasingly favors Mitt Romney.
Santorum said he would support the eventual GOP nominee - if it isn't him - despite what he insists are similarities between front-runner Romney and President Barack Obama that make them indistinguishable on some issues. He caused an intraparty uproar earlier in the week after suggesting he'd prefer a second term for Obama over a Romney presidency.
"I've said repeatedly and will continue to say, I'll vote for whoever the Republican nominee is and I will work for him," Santorum said as he walked back his original comments less than 24 hours before Louisiana polls were set to open. "Barack Obama is a disaster, but we can't have someone who agrees with him on some of the biggest issues of the day."
The situation underscored Santorum's challenges ahead of a Louisiana contest he's favored to win. Santorum has had success in the South, having won last week's contests in Alabama and Mississippi. Regardless of the outcome Saturday, however, Romney will have collected more delegates than his opponents combined as the race then turns to more favorable territory in the coming weeks.
Santorum's continued missteps are complicating a candidacy already struggling to overcome major financial and organizational deficiencies. Before losing this week's Illinois primary, Santorum hurt himself by declaring that neither the economy nor the nation's unemployment rate was his top concern.
"I think the biggest development of the last 24 hours was Sen. Santorum's remarkable mistake in suggesting that re-electing President Obama was acceptable under any circumstance," Republican contender Newt Gingrich told reporters in Port Fourchon, La. (snip)

I have not personally attacked anyone. Not on this thread, not in any of my FR conversations.
I don't want anyone to “bow down” to Santorum. I can understand if people think someone else is a better candidate or if they think Santorum is not articulate enough to be an effective candidate. But I just wish people wouldn't spread the false narrative pushed by the media, Democrats and Romney campaign. Santorum is not dumb, he is not a religious extremist, he does not want to hurt women and most of the “gaffes” attributed to him are lies and distortions by the media.
We need to rebuild a party from the ground up, with an new name to suit. It will take at least 4 years for it to become viable, although inroads are available at the midterm level.
It's obvious that the GOP is dead. They no longer represent us as they have been doing since Newt resigned his speaker position, which he did for that reason alone.
Time will tell, but either way, we are due and in need for a whole new direction. This current one has gone off the rail, over a cliff and into the ocean of failed political affiliations.

Your defense of Santorum is admirable, but the same thing was not offered on behalf of Newt Gingrich by most here. In fact, Newt was degraded most, by those who now proclaim that we need to leave Santorum alone and blindly follow him out of our “duty” to stop Romney. Or else, be forever labeled as a Romney operative.
And you will never convince me that Santorum could even come close to winning the General Election. That simply cannot and will not happen. Santorum is too inept and inexperienced to handle it. The old master Statesman, Newt Gingrich plainly points that fact out about Santorum.

But I will say this If your boy Santorum keeps opening his flapper and swallowing his foot, Then I agree he will hand the 1144 delegates to Mittens.

1. Unemployment does not matter.
2. We need to stay with what we got(Obama) if EtchaSketch is the Nominee(Mittens)
3. pronouncing Zimmerman guilty without knowing the facts.

Like I said, I don’t have to make that decision at this time, as long as Newt’s in, I stand with him. There will be plenty of time for me to make an unsavory choice if I have to.
Nobody asked him that question. It was in his own prepared remarks. It was completely unforced, unasked-for opinion. If you want to be the nominee, job one is don’t volunteer easily used and confused rhetoric that has no upside for voters. Not being an idiot helps too.
The beginnings were established a couple of years ago with the Tea Party. This is a grassroots political group consisting of conservative Americans.
I agree that the GOP has strayed so far afield that they no longer represent the bulk of "republicans" (conservatives) any longer. That's why I identify myself as a Tea Partier. The left can make as much fun of us as they like, it doesn't change their fear of the fact that there are MANY more of us than there are them!

It was a party of Americans, who agree to drop their party label, and come together as Americans, who want less government, lower taxes and a secure border. Of course this IS the Conservative ideology from the start, but that aspect has been set aside and shared equally with all Americans willing to join in a common cause to fight Obama’s Socialism.
This is why I believe Newt and Sarah Palin are perfect as leaders for this new concept in American unity.
