With plans for the country's nuclear sector in tatters after RWE and E.ON decided to pull out, questions are being asked about Britain's energy strategy.
In 2005, Henry Davey, an energy expert at the law firm, Herbert Smith, offered his diagnosis on the UKs energy prospects.
The Government urgently needs to address its energy policy as there are potentially serious security of supply issues on the horizon, he said.
Getting the right commercial incentives for the market to respond to the future challenges, coupled with a clear steer of where nuclear will sit within the long-term energy mix, is essential.
Seven years on, those words might strike a raw nerve with Mr Daveys younger brother, Ed, who is now the Coalitions Energy Secretary.
Last week the German utility giants RWE and E.ON blew two reactor-sized holes in the UKs strategy for new nuclear power when they announced that they were pulling out of a joint nuclear venture in Britain.
Mr Davey is at the helm of the Governments efforts to deliver the £200bn investment in energy infrastructure it believes is needed by the end of the decade. Industry experts now have major doubts about whether the plan will work.
There are three key questions: will enough nuclear power stations be built for the Government to meet its low carbon ambitions? Will the UK have enough power to keep the lights on? And, if so, at what cost to consumers?
The consortium of RWE and E.ON, whose joint venture, Horizon Nuclear Power, planned to build reactors at Anglesey and Oldbury, was one of just three groups proposing new nuclear plants in the UK.
Their decision to withdraw was, therefore, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) admitted, very disappointing.
Both RWE and E.ON said their exit

Some tough choices will need to be made in the UK. I see some dark days ahead for them but I have faith in the british People—they will sort this out and chart a new path for the 21st Century. They took out Nazi Germany—they can solve this one too.
Nonsense.
Didn’t you see what the Rage Virus did them?
I give them another 28 months. ;o)
“They took out Nazi Germany...”
The hell they did.
WE did.
They successfully beat back the Germans in the Battle For Britain. For that they are to be commended and admired.
But it was the United States and the Soviet Union that took out Nazi Germany. Montgomery mostly just got in the way.
Minor correction:
“the Soviet Union” should read “Soviet Russia”.
Yeah. Right.
White children are less then 20% of the children in London this year.
That hasn't happened in oh...since time began. European DNA starts around 60,000 years ago and in England, it's been the same since the last glacial maximum...12000 years ago.
But all of that is being wiped out by immigration.
Britain's gone, sport.
Overrun. Submerged. Finished. Learn Arabic. Soon.
This is what happens when politicians control energy generation instead of engineers/energy producers.
the Brits of the British empire during WW2 are NOT the same brits today.
how do i know?
by the sheer volume of muslims choking the country
The priority listing of these three questions shows why the UK will be in deep doo-doo soon.
The “light” may have gone out long ago in England...
They were a source of light a couple of hundred years ago..
The Brethren church’s glowed brightly...
Cover every square inch of the island nation with them, and supplement that with the bountiful excess produced in Europe.
That's the solution. More green energy. It's so obvious, I don't know why they haven't thought of it!
Post #6 is the bitter truth.
Back to the Dark Ages.
Yep - they asked us to save their bacon and we did. Then they squandered the bacon via socialist-style "governance" and became a muslim-friendly environment. Just what the Left is trying to do to us. I get the feeling that the Left really embraces islam because they all consider themselves imams and safe from the same atrocities they would carry out on the unbelievers.
I wish I shared your optimism. I love Great Britain too.
Nazi Germany was an external threat.
The threat to Great Britain today is from within: decadence, the deadliest threat of all, the destroyer of nations and empires. It has Britain in a death grip.
The British Royal Family is the most successful dynasty in history. Their finger is always in the wind, and if anybody knows which way it's blowing they do! They haven't sat on the throne for more than a thousand years for nothing.
If the Windsors pick up and move to North America, you'll know the lights are out for good in Britain.
If the pick up and move to Australia, you'll know that North America is done for too.
Happy April Fools Day everyone!
