Maniac went for cop-killer bullets: police (.223 ammo)

The crazed gunman who wounded four Brooklyn cops was reaching for another rifle loaded with more powerful, armor-piercing bullets to inflict deadly injuries just before he was stopped, officials said yesterday.

“If he would have been able to grab that gun, this would have been a lot more tragic. It would have been in God’s hands,” said a police official familiar with the case.

“It’s apparent [the suspect] wanted to shoot it out with cops and go out in a blaze of glory.’’

Cops said the ammo from suspect Nakwon Foxworth’s sawed-off military assault weapon would have easily pierced the Kevlar shield that hero Detective Kenneth Ayala used to protect his comrades and himself from the perp’s initial 12-bullet barrage from a 9mm revolver.

The more powerful bullets also would have gone through the officers’ vests, police said.

.357 caliber is 9mm.
.
Almost but not quite. 9mm bullet is .356 and the 38 spl and .357 mag are actual .357.

When one orders ammo does one have to specify what is the target? Deer, elk, moose, chicken, neighbor(white, black , brown, Hispanic, thug or etc?)

Should have read further in the comments. Others have “corrected” your statement so I’m sure you’re tired of hearing about it. That being said I’ve sized 125 gr .357 bullets and used them fine in the 9mm S&W, tragically lost in a canoeing accident of course. ;-)

About a dozen people including me have already pointed out that the 9mm is typically .355, not .356.

If you are shooting 2 inch groups with open sights on a mini-14, then Ruger needs to sign you up as an exhibition shooter. Either that or pay you several thousand dollars for the rifle so they can study it.

The auto was a Browning BDM, a badly recieved DA auto from the 80’s. The High Power, on the other hand, is a fine weapon.

I'm wondering how the press would (or will) describe my lever-action Winchester in .45-70?

Anti-tank weapon maybe?

A convicted felon can’t own firearms.

This story can’t be true.

I love my Canadian Inglis-built No. 2 Mk 1* Hi-Power. It has a very sweet trigger pull and is dead-on at 25 yards.

Concur. However, an SBR Mini 14 still functions just fine.... At 10.5 inches, with or without a supressor, it still works rather well with a stock diamter gas port, better with it opened a bit. Accuracy? Tha tis another issue which mini14s are not noted for .

Don’t believe everything you read, espc. on a non tech/opinion forum like FR.

Yes, the poor ol Browning BDM is now sold as the; wait for it, wait for it, the SIG P220. Browning just marketed it too early- the 1911 was still king of military arms when teh BDM was designed. Now, the SIG family of weapons is one of the best sellers/performers on the market. I traded off my M11 (SIG p226) for a M92 as the SIGs are not too left handed friendly. Not that I like the M92 at all, but no one had 1911s for issue at CENTCOM...

Back to bullet diameters, bo, they are not in exact inches or mm, rather the standards were made , espc. for english/standard calibers, way back in the 18th century. 44 cal has always been .429, 45, .451. 38, .357, 32, .308 40, .395, 54, .530, 50, .490, etc. Alot had to do withteh need for a patch around the ball which filled teh space between bore/grove diamters and teh ball diameter. simple as mud.

Rifle calibers are even more non-standard. a 30 cal has a .300 bore, .308 groove diamter, a 303, a 303 bore, 312 groove, 416 either a 400 bore and 410, 12, or 416 groove, 404 has a 423 groove and a 404 bore, 470 has a ....got it? Exam next wednesday.....

For those who may know, a .223 rem (aka 556 Nato) has a bore diameter of 218 and a groove diamter of???? .223? Nope, .224. See how much sense this makes?

I have owned several Mini-14s tho it has been over 20 years since the last one. I really like them, they are about as neat looking rifle as you will see, they handle well etc.

The problem has always been accuracy. Maybe they have improved in the last 20 years but from what people say, it must not be very much. Interestingly the only 2 other .223 type guns I have owned have been unusually good shooters. Both the H-Bar and an H&K SL-6 would shoot better than I could so I know it is not the cartridge or automatic action that is the problem.

I’ve looked for one of those European P220’s in .38 Super for some time.

As far as caliber diameters are concerned, I’m still trying to find out why the .38-40 (.38WCF) is actually a .401 diameter.

Please see post #83.
Cast lead 9mm bullets, which I use in 95% of my pistol reloading and shooting are sized .356. Jacketed bullets are generally .355.
Find out what your rifle likes, roll your own, use a good rest, like a Ransom and it’s not that difficult.

HOW does one "saw off" a "military assault weapon"?

Doesn't necessarily mean it was shortened at the barrel end. It might have the stock removed and replaced with a pistol grip.

There's also stuff like the Sig Sauer 556 Pistol .

I was probably casting bullets and working up loads before you were born but I can’t know for sure. I no longer do either tho I did save a few die sets and a single hand press just in case. The reason I said “typically .355” is because there are always exceptions.

The 9mm is probably one of the worst calibers to use cast bullets in but as you know, it can be done.

My guess would be less than 1% of 9mm fired, use cast bullets. Maybe even less than that.

I have tried working up loads for the Mini 14, also tried different brands etc. Nothing would make them shoot better than about 5 inches at 100 yards.

I love Ruger firearms but Ruger seems to have had a bit of a problem with long gun accuracy ever since the original number 1 single shot came out. I will say the number 1, unlike the Mini-14 will sometimes shoot well.

TWIST RATE FOR MINI-14

1978-1985 = 1 in 10” (181 series through 184-95447)
1986-1994 = 1 in 7” (184-95448 through 186-42501)
1995-2004 = 1 in 9” (186-42502 through 197 series)
2005- = 1 in 9” (580 series)

This is the first thing for Mini owners to check out to improve accuracy.Use the correct weight bullet weight for the twist rate. Many are unaware of this. I have read about Minis with poor accuracy and Ruger has been working on the issue since they came out. In my limited experience with them I haven’t seen one that shoots that poorly although I don’t doubt it. (I generally don’t insinuate that someone that I don’t know at all is a liar while I am offering unsolicited opinions).

And yeah, you don’t know anything about me but would it really have hurt tha much to say “Hey, we’re both right” instead of tap dancing around?

***The High Power, on the other hand, is a fine weapon.***

I have two Belgian made St Louis Brownings made in 1968. Fine weapons! too fine to carry. Unfortunately they fell out of my pockets when I visited the Grand Canyon and went way, way down!

Or was it Black Canyon of the Gunnison or the Rio Grande bridge at Taos.

Can’t remember!

***I’m still trying to find out why the .38-40 (.38WCF) is actually a .401 diameter.****

I bought an 1873 Winchester rifle in .38-40 back in 1968. I found ammo at $20.00 for a box of 50. That is 1968 prices when .38 spl could be bought for $3.00 for 50 rounds.

It shot ok for a cartridge loaded for pistol pressures. I found that Winchester chambered the barrel extra deep so the case would blow out and split at the neck so you could not reload them.

I sold the rifle ten years later to keep from starving.
