Frenzied hours for US on fate of a China insider (Obama rejected Bo Xilai aide defection attempt)
NDTV ^ | April 18, 2012 | Steven Lee Myers and Mark Landler

Washington: On the evening of February 6, a vice mayor of a major Chinese city who had a reputation as a crime fighter turned up at the American Consulate in Chengdu in an agitated state, telling a tale of corruption and murder that has ensnared the Obama administration in a scandal it wants nothing to do with.

Wang Lijun was taken past police officers loyal to a powerful former patron, Bo Xilai.

The official, Wang Lijun, sought asylum, fearing for his life even as Chinese security forces quickly surrounded the building and asked the American diplomats inside to turn him over.

Instead, after a frantic debate that reached the White House, Mr. Wang stayed until he could arrange for an official from a Beijing ministry to come 36 hours later and escort him past the local security cordon.

The authorities from Beijing took him into custody, and he is now under investigation for divulging internal Chinese affairs to the Americans. If charged with and convicted of treason, he could face a death sentence.

*Snip*

According to the officials' version, the American diplomats who oversaw his brief, bizarre stay pre-empted any formal application for asylum because of the difficulties of spiriting him out of the country and questions about his eligibility.

This transpired pretty much as I suspected. The guy tried to defect, Obama rejected his request and Obama's State Department flunkeys came up with a plan B that would defer the guy's execution until after Nov 2012. A high level defector like this comes once every few decades, so it's predictable that Obama would have declined to accept the valuable insights into the Chinese regime that the guy would have provided. And every potential defector or intelligence asset in China now knows of this betrayal. I'll be glad when Hope and Change finally exits the White House.

Disgraceful. We always knew that Obama was a Marxist tool - but his cruelty and contempt for everybody else is breathtaking. I think he’s going to win in November, but I hope a few months later he gets marched off in handcuffs. He’s disgusting.

This comes as such a big surprise.

Imagine: Zero sides with an enemy regime against the interests of the United States.

I think he does that every other day, and it has a name: The 0bama Doctrine.

Couple years back some poor desperate Nork families hiding out in Beijing jumped over the fence of the Japanese Embassy, only to be handed back to the Chinese, to be deported to almost certain execution in NK.

Now we see that OUR government is JUST AS cowardly.

WOW..!!!

[ This shows how Obama is a traitor and worse than any mere liberal. ]

Yup, he could have easily lifted a finger and gave him sanctuary or at the very least work with Canada or the UK or some other nation to do so, but nope, delay execution till next year....

We need to hammer this onto Obama during the 2012 election.

... and questions about his eligibility.

Of all the unholy, flaming GALL!

Did you see this one, Sir??

Here's an ebattled POTUS who has NEVER made the most remote EFFORT to settle any of the swirling questions about his own eligibility, and his administration has -- effectively -- condemned this Chinese guy to death over -- ta-daaaa -- questions about his eligibility!!

The abject hypocrisy is palpable, and disgusting on every conceivable level.

On January 20th, as his hand leaves the Holy Bible, I want Newt on the phone to Beijing arranging a trade. I'll give you three guesses who we should offer, and the first two don't count.

Given ALL the facts in the case - the guy was one of the ‘enforcers’ in the corrupt local government of the former boss he was running from - I think GW Bush would have made the same decision, and so would I.

He was no political dissident and he did not seek asylum - he wanted what he got; protection in the U.S. embassy until we could safely get him into bational government hands, and away from the hands of police controlled by his old boss.

He was no dissident nor a really nice guy. He did not want out of the Chicom system, he wanted to be the whistle blower who would end the rising-star carreer of his former corrupt boss. So far, he helped to achieve that much.

He was no dissident and in spite of all he could tell us, if we could pretend he was a dissident and try to hang on to him, the difficulty would not provide equal benefit for the effort. Most of the ‘intelligence’ he knows is about the many ways in which his former boss and the bosses wife were corrupt and corruptly feathered their own nests - circumstances he helped them with.

He is no dissident. It is a truly internal affair in China and one with which our better role is in NOT pretending he’s a dissident who sought asylum in the U.S.

We have a lot of foreign intelligence assets operating on a purely commercial basis, i.e. for money. If these assets were required to have clean hands, we wouldn't have very many of them at all. And one of the requirements of risking life and limb in Uncle Sam's behalf is an asylum package. A walk-in like this guy is like manna from heaven. We get to discover everything we don't know but would like to find out about the relationship between provincial governments and central government - how money gets disbursed, what kinds of administrative mechanisms aid or prevent charismatic individuals like Bo Xilai and Lin Biao from launching coup attempts. The possibilities are vast for a would-defector like this guy. Intelligence-wise, the most useful defectors are not political dissidents like Fang Lizhi or Andrei Sakharov - they're disgruntled nomenklatura who have gotten their hands dirty.

What’s more, I suspect there’s a lot of blackmail material on senior Chinese leaders we could have gotten from this guy. Material we could have followed up on and used perhaps to extract concessions from some of these people or recruit them as intelligence assets.

with this deliberate betrayal of American vital interests, Obama takes it to a new level

when Gouzenko defected in Ottawa, Kim Philby downplayed his significance and got someone also suspected of being a spy to interview him

I don't know the facts here, and the separate posts by Wuli and Zhang Fei show there are at least two and possibly more than two sides to this story.

What I do know is that this sounds really, really bad.

Do those on the ground have better information than what little we're seeing in the American news media?

The guy wasn't an asylee - he was a defector. Big difference.
